Is WKTU dropping Current Dance?

According to Allen Sniffen's NY Board it is today while just leaving the Friday & Saturday night mixshows intact. We will see if this is true especially tonight. We all saw this coming though.......

I have one question? Do New Yorkers really like hearing the same Donna Summer/Bee Gees/Shannon whatever songs all the time on TWO FM stations? Are people THAT stuck in the past they can't enjoy todays DANCE music?

Nope and it is true. Look at todays play list. People are longing to hear new stuff by labels like Nervous Records, Micmac, Utra Records and even Robbins thats gets alot of current airplay.

Folks...especially to the New York area listeners, we are slowly seeing the DEATH of 'KTU.

They are heading towards a DANGEROUS path by dropping the currents and leaning HARDER on classic material. And for what, a station that can't crack past a 2 in the ratings? ('NEW). Allan noted this in his board reflections and I happen to agree with him on that point.

As much as dance fans such as myself have complained that 'KTU didn't do enough for current dance, it was for the few currents that they did play that differentiated themselves from Mix.

BTW, I will be working on a myspace to get the dance fans together. While I will avoid "picking" on 'KTU, something HAS to be done to acknowledge the dance music crowd in NYC. Even if we have to rally over at Newport or in front of MIX's studios to prove it.

WKTU's evening playlist is the same as always...currents and non. It may be that they will however increase their non currents in the day parts as they try and decipher their way through decreasing ratings. I would think though that in a city like New York, probably the most dance friendly in the US. that they might take a more current approach instead of the opposite and in direct competition of New York's other floundering Rhythmic ac, Mix 102.7.
How many floundering Rhythmic ac stations does one market need? Are there really that many hispanic females to appeal to?

Looking at whats played tonight, it looks like mostly classic dance with a few currents like Justin Timberlake/Pussycat dolls whatever current pop sprinkled in for the whole night. The 8:00 hour had a few dance songs like Evermore/Luz Divina. Thats it for the night unless you count Cascada's big hits played tonight. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. I remember when KTU was way better than this. Now look at it!

Long story short KTU never was new enough dance music to consider it a true dance station yet i will admit it was a good station to listen to in the beginning but after the 5 songs they played on that faithful first day i was dissapointed that they werent pure dance and also that Tony disbanding the Coalition but this time around i will hope for better results. We all need to support Tony and the coalition which i am joining.

Pete...I have to correct you on one little thing. It's not about supporting me.....it's about supporting dance music! :) Heck, I'm just the "loudmouth" stirring up the pot a bit! :D That's the one thing about the coalition....it's all about the music! It's not about me, not about any of us. It's the bigger picture and we have to grasp at it :)

Thats true Im proving my love for it and I got a big mouth at least thats what my family and girlfriend says lmao.

How can I play a part in the coalition? What can one do to get their voice heard that they want new dance music and dont wanna be trapped in the 70s any longer... stage a demonstration in front of their building? That wouldnt help cause im sure most of the staff wishes they can play new music as well... how do we let the corporate big wigs knows what we want?

become a friend of the Coalition on the myspace page and then stay tuned for farther information.

JayD.... JOIN US! :)

Right now we are "rallying the troops" as it may, to get as many people on line as possible. Once we do that, we WILL start basic grass roots (letter-writing campaigns, rallies outside corporate offices, etc.) We would also hope that clubs could donate some time for coalition meetings..perhaps have artists perform and garnering as much attention as possible.

And even though the coalition may have "New York" on it....we really are out for the bigger picture, to get dance music mainstream and gain bigger acceptance throughout the US. Daunting task??? Absolutely..but this time around we are going to do it and we WILL stick around! :)

I joined!

I work at a dance club so contact me if you would like to possibly meet there. Its located not too far from the KTU offices in Jersey.

I live in LA where we have nothing and only heard KTU about the time The Groove went off the air here, which was 1998. With whats going on, would it be possible for you dance fans to try and apprach Mix 102.7 to play more current dance? This would be a good opportunity for them to pick up all the listeners who are not happy with the changes at KTU.

La Kalle would make perfect sense but I really would think that KTU would have to fold while Mix sticking to the same classic format. Either that I still think as a long shot Emmis owned CD101.9 would be the most sense since Emmis really knows how to operate a dance station in NYC (Hot 103/97).

I'm not hearing anything different... KTU is severly dayparted as usual... may be because I listen every day I'm not noticing the changes, but I still hear classics, new wave, free style, and currents... it'll never be like online Energy 98, but it is a form of a dance station that has commercially worked for over 10 years. ~shrug~

Univision would never flip La Kalle to an English speaking format and much less if it is Dance.I don't see any real changes coming soon to either Mix or KTU.IMO,both will go head to head for at least a year before any format changes would come.

We're not asking La Kalle to dump reggaeton.

But for those of you that may remember back into the 90's when there was a dance music void, La Mega 97.9 threw on some English dance music. Being that La Kalle is a young oriented station, adding a few English dance hits can't hurt. That's all we are asking if 'KTU doesn't want to fill the void nor would Mix 102.7 want to take the challenge.

I remember back when Mega play the biggest club records back in the late 90's. Good times! Now, that there is Reggaeton to compliment Salsa and Merengue overkilled along with Bachata it will be harder to come by.And Reggaeton listeners are not likely to listen to dance in great numbers just like the Hip Hop crowd. I think the best chance for current dance to return on the NYC radio dial is through an underperforming station.
