Is WLW ready for Gary Burbank's retirement?

We're almost into December, and won't this be the last month of Gary Burbank's show? I haven't heard word one about a possible replacement. Anyone have any knowledge, rumors or idle speculation?

"Is WLW ready for Gary Burbank's retirement?"

I don't know, but I sure am. His schtick wore off on me 15+ years ago.

Hey Major--someone pee in your Reese Puffs Cereal this morning?

What do you like about radio in this town? The pretty lights on the towers? The ED spots?

Just wondering.

After listening to the some of the truly stale pieces that show has aired while Gary was away last week...(brief spot check to see what was going on), it really shows how truly dated the material is...the voices, the writing for the most part is tedious and forced...and, while I'm in favor of locally generated bits, these simply don't measure up. Many played last week were at least ten years old.
Gary seems to be a really nice person, and is a legend, but retirement at this stage seems appropriate.

I will miss him. Although I don't listen much anymore, I used to religiously back when I was in middle school, even if that was 6 years ago. Knowing WLW, they'll put an obnoxious Willie clone in Gary's spot...maybe Scott Sloan ::)

I still think Willie will take over Gary's slot. Move Scott Sloan up to Willie's and put one of their part-time fill in hosts on at night.

I may be totally wrong.

and btw, leave it to the Cincy board to once again make the first reply to a thread be something about "i hate it". This place amuses the hell out of me. People going out of their way to listen to stations and shows they don't like, just so they can complain about it on a message board. Unreal....but I guess it's not unique to Cincy. It's the internet in general.

DJJack,if you are referring to me with the "i hate it" quote, I didn't post that.
I used to listen to Burbank until his shows became too much of the same old thing. That's why I said his schtick wore off on me 15+ years ago. I used to listen to every bit of his show every day. It's just after a while, I didn't like it anymore.

Mr. Radar, no one peed in my mess kit. I don't make insulting comment on the board. Saying the program's schtick wore off on me is a factual statement of my opinion, not a personal slap at Burbank. I have met him many times and he is quite personable. I used to love his show, I just got tired of it. That's all.

I do like WCIN's attempt at jazz, even though it is the satellite variety. I like what Dusty is doing with WDJO. I like WMKV....if it only had a signal that would cover more. Sorry Radar, when the personality left Cincinnati radio, I lost interest.

I agree with the posts that say his "schtick" has gotten old, and just isn't funny anymore. I'd vote to put Scott Sloan in the slot--very creative and entertaining--I just never listen to the radio at night where he is now. The very LAST thing I hope doesn't happen is that one of the Burbank sidekicks get the show. We've had tastes of that when Burbank's been away.

I say No to Scott Sloan. Yuck!! I like the idea of having an entertainment show in the afternoon slot. Duke and the fill-in gang for Burbank would be a better replacement rather than moving Sloan to the afternoon slot.

Can you say "syndicated programming"? Considering how cheap Clear Channel has gotten lately. They have just replaced long time host Joe Elliot at WHAS in Louisville with the syndicated Michael Savage show.

It's all about doing it cheaper. And they wonder why the audience is eroding.

Are you suggesting that Hannity would move to WLW. Wouldn't that leave a hole to fill at 55KRC? Maybe they would try a local afternoon show again 3-6PM.

I wish they would move Scott Sloan to Gary's time spot. I love Scott. He's funny as hell and he should be on all year long and not just 6 months out of the year. Baseball sucks

Ok then, maybe Sean Hannity to WLW (that would compliment Willie) and move Scott Sloan to 55krc from 3PM-6PM.

OR

Move Scott Sloan to afternoons on WLW (Willie would not be movd there because then he would be going up against his friend, Sean Hannity.

Sloanie did a show on wedgies a couple of years back that had me ROFL. Reminded me of Jean Shepherd.

He can be very entertaining when he's not towing the CC political/formatic line for Darryl and his robot overlords. He did great work in afternoons at WSPD...when he wasn't enraging the NAACP. Do his kids go to Lakota?

i would classify sloan as an entertainment show first, and quasi-political as a distant second. he's obviously the contender for burbank's slot, and rightfully so. as for whom will replace him - no idea. knowing CC, probably a "best of willie" or "best of..." whatever show.

Is Sterling still around? Maybe just use him to fill the non-sports days. Seems a waste to have a full-timer who's only on once a week for six months out of the year.

Hey, FWIW, I've never gotten tired of Gary's schtick--he's still a funny SOB, one of the last great humorists left on American radio. In the same class with Larry Lujack, Jay Thomas, Gerry House and a handful of others. As WLW's only humorous air-talent, though, Burbank has always been kind of a "sore thumb."

Given that he's the only funny personalilty WLW has ever hired in the past 30 years, my guess would be that they'll plug somone like Bill (I Can Outshout Anyone) Cunningham in there. Or maybe just convert PM Drive into an all-news segment and save the air-talent salary.

Seeing as how Clear Channel fired 10 jocks in LA over the weekend, I'd put money on the "No Jock PMD" option.

I guess CC's way of competing with satellite radio, is to become just like them, huh? (No on air talent) Except for the commercials, though.

How about Daryl (sp?) Parks. CC has very few off air PD's, maybe he'll take his Saturday show full time?

I have an idea. How about hiring Terry Meiners out of WHAS in Louisville. Anything to get him the hell out of here.
