That time slot is so full of commercials and CLUTTER that it would be interesting to hear willie or sloan try and get anything going. I seriously doubt they would do anything syndicated.....but the smart money says that it will be no more spectacular of a replacement than Daugherty for Furman. Anything new at that station in the last 10-15 years has been mediocre at best, and anything new in the last 5 years has been obnoxious and geared toward the retarded.
Gary's show isn't what it once was, because nothing is what it once was...but it can still have absolutely hilarious moments, the rarity of live music, satire, good(and bad) impressions.
The people who say it got old: if you listen to some of the 'best of' stuff he's been playing, I'm not sure that stuff was better than what he does now, I think it was just unique to hear it at the time.
Hope he has a great time in retirement, he deserves it.
