Is WOCL-HD signal off?

I relocated from Irving, Texas to Winter Garden, Florida to work for the DCP (Disney College Program) Internship at WDW (Walt Disney World) for a year and I have became a WDW part-time cast member. I stayed at the FCV (Flamingo Crossings Village) - West near Western Way and Hartzog Road.

I lived-in a unit on the fourth floor of building 35 at FCV West for my 12 months in the DCP. I was able to pick-up a lot of stations I enjoy over-the-air for both Tampa and Orlando area from my bedroom. My favorites are WDUV, WMTX, WMGF, WOCL, WMMO, and WWRZ. I was relocated to the fourth floor of building 24 at the same community in July 2024 after the end of my DCP and that I became a PT CM at WDW.

Building 24 is at the southeast corner of the FCV West community, bldg 35 is at the northwest corner. I can pick-up WDUV HD1’s signal most of the time from the 4th floor of bldg 35, but WDUV hardly comes into the 4th floor of bldg 24.

I had noticed something funny and I couldn’t recall if this is due to me moving from building 35 to building 24 after the end of my Disney College Program Internship. I used to be able to pick-up WOCL HD’s signal very well since I lived in bldg 35 from July 2023 to July 2024. I don’t remember, but I think the last time I see WOCL in HD is around March or May of 2024. It could be I’m staying at building 24 now even WOCL, WMMO, and WMGF all comes in clearly for me at bldg 24 and my HD Radio is more stable locked onto WMGF-HD1 than it was when I was staying at building 35. Sometimes WMGF’s analog reception was so poor at building 35, I ended up listening to WMTX which comes in strong from Tampa and WMTX’s HD signal stay locked on my radio.

I had always had a solid 5 out of 5 bars on my Sangean HDR-18 HD Radio receiver for WOCL from both building 24 and 35, but just analog and solid RDS. No HD since July.

From my experience, the Sony XDR-F1HD, Sangean HDT-20, and Sangean HDT-16 that I have and left at my parents’ house in Irving, Texas is able to pick-up most Dallas-Ft. Worth stations including KDGE, KJKK, KSPF, and KZPS pretty well. The Sangean HDT-20 usually picks-up around 2-4 bars out of 5 for most Dallas-FW stations. I know the Sony is better than the Sangean. I expect the same capabilities I have with the Sangean HDR-18 I have here at the FCV in Winter Garden, Florida.

So, is it my new unit location within my apartment community or did something happen? Has WOCL’s HD signal has been off for quite some time this Summer 2024 or am I simply not receiving WOCL’s HD signal? Did WOCL reduced the ERP of their HD signal?

It's not just you. I was airchecking Orlando radio last Saturday, & noticed that I couldn't get 105.9FM's HD signal, also. It would've been nice to hear "O-Rock" since they flipped FM 101.9 earlier this month.

As for other Audacy stations, 105.1FM's HD signal was working, as I was enjoying the music on "Channel Q" on 105.1HD2. I couldn't get 101.9FM's HD signal, but I was enjoying the last weekend of 102 Jamz before they recently added commercials.

Did you contact (email, the app, many even an old fashioned phone call) the station?

My best guess: It could be a permanent (cost reduction) or they are waiting for parts from the transmitter manufacturer.

A well ran ran radio station will try to keep "in contact" with it's audience. The audience is what they sell to their customers.

Parts for 10 year or more systems can be challenging at times.

I might have to eventually.

All Renda Broadcasting FM stations from my hometown Oklahoma City, KMGL, KOMA, and KRXO turned off their HD signals in 2008 due to interference issues.

Shortly before Renda sold their OKC stations to Tyler Media in 2013, KRXO’s HD signal was turned back on a few months prior to flipping from Classic Rock to Sports as Renda was moving Classic Rock to KRXO-HD2 and KRXO’s translator.

Tyler also turned KOMA’s HD signal back on to launch more HD sub stations. KMGL HD’s signal still remained off till this very day. Or, at least till 2022. My last car trip visit to Oklahoma City and I brought my Zune HD with me that time. I have moved-to and live in Winter Garden, FL since July 2023. So, this is not an unusual thing. KMGL is still licensed to broadcast hybrid digital according to the FCC website today, same WOCL.

My guess is that they may believe their HD signal isn’t as important as the main analog signal itself when it comes to selling to the ad revenues. Their main analog signal has been working fine so far with FM stereo and fully working RDS. I believe that’s more important to Audacy.

IMHO HD is like FM was in the 1960's. An operator might have one but monetizing the service is was difficult. I have heard HD is the future of OTA like FM was in the late 1960's. Hindsight is 2020.

It'll be great for every analog FM station to broadcast in HD one-day and it'll be even greater for the future if we have a complete analog FM shut-off which would give the HD FM technology more advantage.

Logistically impossible to do a complete switchover to all-HD. DAB’s a different beast altogether in Europe.

I actually prefer the analog FM radio sound over the HD1, to be honest, & would rather hear a little static instead of complete silence when the signal isn't strong enough for a direct line-of-sight reception. However, I do like the extra channels.

Additionally, I noticed that the HD signal of WOCL’s sister station WJHM has also been turned off as of September 11, 2024. The last time this happened to the station (as WQMP) was in the spring of 2019, over 5 years ago. But that was due to ongoing maintenance that occurred at that time.

WOCL and WJHM share the same facility on the Orange City tower (along with WMGF) so most likely it's related with however Audacy has got things wired and operating. Maybe the main transmitter is on reduced power for maintenance and the've got the HD currently turned off on purpose. Is WMGF's HD operating normally?

Yes, it is operating normally.

Same for me. WMGF's HD has been operating normal for me.

Back when I was living in Irving, Texas. I remembered a time when the HD signal blacked-out and even the RDS data blanked entirely for a number of iHM and Audacy stations for the whole evening and night in Dallas once in Spring 2017 and once in Summer 2019. KDGE, KDMX, KLUV (now KSPF), and/or KJKK were affected. HD and RDS entirely off, just plain vanilla analog.

I think it’s logistically impossible due to the large population with different wealth distributions and economic stability in the United States. The only reason why Norway was able to make the transition smoothly is due to its smaller population and its nation is developed.

DAB/DAB+ isn’t that great. There’s too much audio compression for the allocated bandwidth, but at the same time its single channel multiplexer doesn’t have enough space to allocate more streams into the single channel bandwidth where as HD Radio uses the remaining side bandwidth on the FM. That’s why HD can interfere weaker/distant analog FM stations are potentially interfere their own FM analog signal. DAB don’t have that issue though. I believe HD Radio and DAB have their very own disadvantages and advantages.

Hello. I can confirm that WOCL's hd has been off for a few weeks. I recently found my hdr14 radio that had been packed away for 2 years. I don't recall if their HD2 or HD3s were running anything. I'm relearning the hd channels in this area again.

Same! I found out this myself on the late evening of Tuesday, September 24, 2024. This photo shot is also from 12:34 AM of Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

The listing on HDRadio.com hasn't been updated in a while & is not entirely accurate.
They still have "103.1 The Wolf" & "101.9 Amp Radio" listed. 😂

As of Friday, September 27th, 2024, these are the HD channels for both WJHM 101.9FM & WOCL 105.9FM:
WJHM 101.9HD2 = Bet QL
WJHM 101.9HD3 = G Praise

WOCL 105.9HD2 = Infinity Sports Network

No more O-Rock.
