Is WTHZ Hitz94 for sale/sold?

I've been hearing some rumblings from a few people that WTHZ might have a new owner before long. Anyone else heard anything? There still seems to be some question about whether it will ultimately become a Charlotte station (through a tower move) or remain in Greensboro. The current owner doesn't seem too interested in playing the radio game. If it is sold, wonder what format they'd carry.

I don't know this for sure ...

with that said, I doubt very seriously Gig Hilton wants to/or will sell Hitz 94. The signal can't quite reach Charlotte and Rowan County still won't allow a tower where it needs to be for a move into Charlotte.

The station can't compete in either Greensboro OR Charlotte. It's numbers in Greensboro are horrible due to no signal Alamance County. The numbers would be similar in Charlotte because even with a new tower, there would be no signal in Gaston, York or Lancaster Counties

I don't think Gig Hilton can get his act together and figure out what to do with his lame station. The rumors about the sale/no sale and the move/no move have been going on for 3+ years. Meanwhile, Hitz ratings go down down down. MAKE A DAMN DECISION AND EXECUTE SOMETHING ALREADY!

I am pretty sure that site is the one located near the grass airstrip known as Miller's Airpark near the town of Mt Ulla. The Rowan County Commissioners have issued a moritorum on towers within a certain distance of an airport.

The folks that live in that area have no interest in having a 1500' tower with high intensity strobes in their neighborohood for some reason...

From what I hear about Gig Hilton, he is unlikely to sell. Likes the status owning the station gives him. Big UNC fan and carries their games. Apparently has more money than he knows what to do with.

And if they want any decent coverage of Charlotte at all, it has to be in Rowan due to spacings. 104.7's location on the far north end of Mecklenburg county doesn't help their move-in at all, combined with the 94.1 in the SC Upstate (which is why they went with such low power on a tall stick to begin with). It likely won't happen. I also agree. I think he likes the status of being an owner and isn't ready to give that up to improve his golf game.

why not just move the signal closer to G'boro? put it sidemounted on a current FM stick and change the format. bam. new, better sounding station. long shot. but just an idea

Shortspacings all around. It has a little room to the south, but not much. Their current location is the closest they can get to Greensboro and Burlington with WRSN. WRSN has a city grade signal over most of Greensboro and all of Burlington (they are licensed to Burlington). After the move to Cary, WRSN will still have city grade sigal over Burlington and the fast growing eastern Guilford area. The move will help Hitz 94, by weakening WRSN's signal over Guilford. That is a problem, since most radios seem to favor the lower signal among two competing signals.

Call me crazy, but who says it has to be either a Greensboro or Charlotte station to be successful?

Why not serve Lexington/Statesville/Salisbury...it's static-free FM there, and they could cater local news and content to those communities. People in Lexington and Statesville rarely hear their local news on the big signals from Charlotte or Greensboro. There could be a niche here. It would be MUCH better, in my opinion, than trying to fight a battle in Charlotte or Greensboro that you'll NEVER win.

fill the 'FMX hole??????

Several years ago the station did give country a try and it didn't work. Their big mistake at that time was trying to out TQR WTQR. As for Gig selling, why should he? It looks to me like he is livin' the good life.

There is no FMX hole, if you are talking about country. I suggest they take a version of their AM (1490) and flip it to the FM - super serve Davidson county and Forsyth and forget about Guilford (except maybe the Thomasville/High Point portion).

Again, knowing the owner, it wouldn't surprise me. Anything that requires aggressive promotion would.

So what's the big deal about HITZ94 .. they have been very open about attempting to build a tower in Rowan County .. I keep hearing they are moving .. they are selling .. they are this or that .. personally I think it is their decision about what they do or not do .. it's not like we don't have stations in Greensboro or in Charlotte that offer alternative programming .. it sounds like some of you must know Gig Hilton hence the comments about his golf and being a UNC fan .. so far I think those labels could be tatoo'd on lots of guys in the Triad .. having to much money is another story .. I for one have no knowledge of that .. maybe you know something the rest of us don't. Oh well .. sure make for interesting reading.

;)So is it $20 Mil??? Will it be Spanish??? 8)

Could WTHZ technically move to the old WFMX site in Cool Springs? They could still keep Lexington as COL or maybe move COL to the little town of Cooleemee.

I heard again today that there is a letter of intent signed on Hitz94. Word is it's being bought to become a Hispanic station. I also heard that if the tower stays where it is, the selling price will be $20 million. If the tower gets moved to Rowan County, it'll be $28 million. This is the second time I've heard this exact information and it's been from two different sources. I think it's happening. I wonder if the format change being discussed on the other thread has anything to do with this particular transaction.

By the way, I had to change to CCX1 from CCX because somehow I dropped out when Radio-Info changed to their new look, etc.

You're probably right Manwhore. The station will probably continue to sit in a state of suspended animation, doing nothing, but watching the ratings go down - down- down, while watching the grass grow on the golf course.
