Is WVKO AM in trouble??

Sean:

Please enlighten me on how you would know who knew what, and when, inside West 5th relative to Ed's last broadcast here.

Big Eddie and I had very pleasant conversation over dinner after the event. What did we talk about?

Best,
JbC

I was able to listen to Ed Sulultz's show on: http://web.archive.org/web/20060325042138/http://www.kb1520.com/ WKBW Buffalo 1520 shortly after it was taken off the air on WTPG-AM 1230 in Columbus.

I would listen to his show off the air on my Sony Walkman during my daily walks.
One day, Ed took a call from a caller in Ohio who complained about the loss of the show in Columbus.
Ed said the reason the show was taken off the air in Columbus is because Clear Channel didn't
promote his show and/or the progressive talk format. He said no bill boards were ever put up for his show.
He went on to say that when he visited Columbus, Ohio Clear Channel didn't even sponsor his trip. He said the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local wanted him to visit Columbus so they sponsored his Columbus appearance. I heard him say this in March or April of 2006 and wasn't aware Big Eddie even made a trip to Columbus until I heard him discuss his trip with that caller over affiliate WKBW in Buffalo, New York. The impression I got
from Big Eddie was that Clear Channel was to blame for the loss of his show and for the progressive talk format on WTPG-AM 1230 in Columbus, Ohio. But Big Eddie also says he has a big ego on the air.

I do recall Stephanie Millers WTPG appearance in Columbus. That was sponsored(?) by Clear Channel and
the tickets went very fast. Also, WTPG sponsored another appearance of an Air America personalty but
the name escapes me.

I believe it was Al Franken.

John, you could enlighten me on why my account rep had no knowledge of Big Eddie's visit until I mentioned it to her. This was after I heard about the appearance from Big Eddie on his show. But I figure your attention could be better focused on WCOL after its sharp drop in the last book.

Certainly, I will ask Big Eddie to share his thoughts on the matter this Friday.

Good night, JohnBoy.

Sean:

Can't speak to one employee's knowledge, but I think it is somewhat presumptuous and pompous on your part to assert that no one at the station knew until you spoke with one person. I mean, really...you're smarter than that.

Please extend my welcome back to the market to Mr. and Mrs. Schultz. They're delightful folks, as I hope you have the opportunity to learn. It should be a good pair of shows, if past history is any indicator.

As for my focus, well, everyone needs a hobby! Thanks for the diversion. Although I am still unclear on why you apparently do not care for me, us both being WCUE alums and all.

Now, back to the countdown.

Best,
JbC

Yay for WCUE alums.

:)

I'm curious to hear how the live broadcasts come off. I'm making the assumption that Team Fargo is bringing its own remote equipment, of the Hotline/Vector/etc. variety using a phone line at the union hall.

Question anyone?

Why did Clear Channel sponsor both Stephanie Miller and Al Franken's trip to Columbus but NOT Ed Schultz's
trip when they were on the old WTPG 1230? Big Eddie said Clear Channel refused to sponsor his trip to
Columbus back then when he was on the old WTPG but the Plumbers Union sponsored his trip to Columbus.

As far as my reception of WKBW 1520 in Buffalo goes, back in March and April off 2006, his show was
on in the early evening at the station. Here was WKBW's programing schedule back then:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060325042138/http://www.kb1520.com/
He is NOW on live at that station. You can hear WKBW in Columbus, Ohio during the evening hours
if you have a very sensitive radio and you are willing to put up with some static and interference.
I'm a Big Eddie fan so I had to resort to listening to Big Eddie on a out of town radio station when
he was off the air in Columbus, Ohio back then. Same thing for the Stephanie Miler Show. It also helps being a DXer.

Best I recall, it was engineering from my humble part of the broadcast world coordinating and manning dual ISDN connections (Adtrans, bonded, 112k, I believe), mix to net, mix-minus backhaul, local PA, setup and teardown of all that gear. What amount of hard costs equals "sponsorship?"

I was the 1675 State Road era, but I did travel to Sackett a time or two with Henry.

For the record...it was a nice turnout. Big Eddie wants to come back, and he wants to help Gary make WVKO successful. :)

And while I was remembered from the last visit, nobody on Team Fargo remembers JohnBoy Crenshaw.

You can call me pompous and presumptuous, but at least I'm memorable. ;D

Good night, JohnBoy. 8)

It nice to see Big Eddie is very compassionate about WVKO's success in Columbus market. Did he try to
buy WVKO-AM at one time with the intentions of turning it into progressive talk radio before Mr. Richards
signed an LMA with the station? If so, he may have turned down the offer because of the price they were
asking for WVKO-AM was to high.

Also, the WVKO-AM saga continues in the Letters to the Editors section of the local Columbus Dispatch.
DAVE DAULTON aka "Dave of Gahanna" in the local talk show circuit, had this letter published in the August
15, 2008 edition of Columbus Dispatch. Dave is one of WVKO-AM most adamant supporters. He occasional
calls into Open Line on WOSU-AM to plug WVKO-AM.

This following is his letter that was published in the Columbus Dispatch:

Radio stations should respect community
Friday, August 15, 2008 2:54 AM

The Aug. 1 letter, "Radio host Savage recognizes problem," from Dale E. Lauffer, tried to portray right-wing radio as inevitable; just plain good business.

But, as Dispatch Staff Reporter Tim Feran noted on May 7, 2007, after progressive WTPG became the right-wing WYTS (1230 AM), its ratings dropped to dead last.

More than a year later, its ratings still are less than half what it pulled in under its liberal format, and it is already being beaten by the new progressive WVKO (1580 AM), which started only in December.

And WVKO is already beating WRFD (880 AM) and WLW (700 AM) as well, which means liberal hosts Stephanie Miller, Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartman, etc., draw more Columbus listeners than the likes of conservative hosts James Dobson, Bill Cunningham and Michael Savage.

I think this is not only because WVKO has local programs, news and sports, but also because its lineup of hosts is infinitely more entertaining than the whole ubiquitous and dismal herd of Rush Limbaugh and the Rush-alikes put together.

But even if right-wing radio were "good business," it would be bad for Columbus.

When Savage calls autistic children "brats," black kids "ghetto slime" and Mexicans "leaf blowers" who are "making war on the white race," and when he tells a gay caller to "get AIDS and die," he may be speaking for some communities, but not ours.

I'm not calling for censorship, and no one I know seriously advocates bringing back the unwieldy Fairness Doctrine. But we should restore the requirement for stations using the public airways to serve their communities and respect their values.

And even with no such requirement, a responsible station should no more consider broadcasting hate speech into our radios than its owners would contemplate dumping sewage in our streets.

And speaking of good business, WVKO is the one talk station in the state where local businesses can advertise without having their names identified with bigotry, anti-environmentalism and an extremist neocon drumbeat.

Ultimately, there is no good business without good citizenship.

Well WVKO 1580AM just went up to another tenth of a point. 0.7 to 0.8. I just heard a Budget Rent A Car commercial. Now Since I'm somewhat an exile member of Ohio Majority Radio since I keep telling the truth that commercial radio is a for profit business and Air America Radio is a failed radio network. WVKO 1580 AM will do alot better if they just keep Air America Programming during the weekends. There are many other progressive talkers out there that is not part of Air America Radio. Randi Rhodes, Mike Malloy, Peter B Collins. Leslie Marshall, and maybe Doug Stephan since he used to air on the last now defunct libreal radio network I.E. Radio Network.

The only Air America talker to keep on the weekdays is Thom Hartmann. Since his show is actually owned by WYD Media Management in association with Democracy Radio. The show is broadcasted to affilates by Dial Global satellite dishes. The same Dial Global that bought Jones Radio. If or when Air America goes out of business Thom Hartmann wouldn't be affected that much.

Now it all lies with the business. I'm gald that there are new advertisers on the station every day. Rosati Windows and Org. Mattress Factory are advertising. Don't tell me that they are no name companies.

The GM is doing a fine job. The ratings are going up.

I notice WYTS may be inching up, too. I wonder if the high level of interest in the presidential contest may be helping these stations a bit. BTW, nice to hear that VKO's Ed Schultz event apparently went well.

The last figure I saw had 'VKO at a 1.0 12 plus. Certainly worth them celebrating, given the challenges they face.

And yes, you are right...with a Presidential campaign on, I'm sure there's interest on both sides of the political spectrum in talk radio. And it will grow as you get closer to November.

It just might be possible, WVKO could pop a 1.5 or near a 2.0 this fall if they play their cards right. And if I were them, though they can't state numbers (as they don't subscribe to Arbitron), they could promote by saying "more and more people everyday are making the "right" choice to exercise their Constitutional "right" to be "Left", with Progressive Talk 1580, WVKO." And air listener comment promos to make their point.

Remember, I'm not arguing ideology here. I'm talking radio programming and content here.

Willcali is correct. WVKO-AM got a 0.8 12 plus ratings in the latest book here:

http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/

I agree that WVKO could have close to a 2.0 12 plus rating this fall if they played played their cards right from
the beginning. Some of the people that sampled the station in the beginning and were turned off by the technical difficulties, ect will never return to VKO. I do understand the REASON for getting the station on the air as soon as possible during this election year but I think they should have had all their ducks lined up in a row before progressive talk VKO took to the airwaves.

There is a WVKO 103.1 FM that broadcast out of the same building. It might be that WYTS does carries Reds Games. Right now I just heard a local promo by Ed Schultz for WVKO. This is good.

Interesting articles.

Forget about all the allegations, it's just fun -- as always -- to marvel at Percy Squire's goofball ramblings.  In fact, after reading the Post article, I could've sworn it closed with:

"Concerned listeners can make input regarding this case number: BLAH/BLAH."

Upon closer observation I saw my mind had logically transposed BAL/BALH into something a bit more appropriate.

Percy could have said it all much more succinctly:  "I resent the allegations, and I resent the alligator!"

The Post article only concerns the Zwirn effort in Florida, where it still leases the stations from Tama.

Here in Ohio, the ex-Stop 26 stations are all actually owned by Zwirn's Bernard Ohio broadcast subsidiary, and as far as I can tell, were legally transferred per the bankruptcy proceeding through the FCC.
