Is WWL Racist? Think About it:

X

Let's see now...how many African Americans does WWL have on the air on their (now) three WWL stations? Oh yes...their token Monica. That's one. Any others among their highly-paid staff of 99% white faces?

And they had an opportunity to replace B-B-B-Buddy to do sports, a position that is perfect for a name black in a black city to announce sports which itself is 75% black. Who do they get? Bobby Hebert, who was a flop in the NFL, and who calls *himself* the alleged Cajun Cannon coming out of every break. Calls himself !!!

So where are the qualified black presences on WWL? Now they have three stations and nothing much more than all whites. There are a lot of local, black ex-Saints like Rickey Jackson (you know, the black athlete with the banner hanging in the dome?) and other athletes who deserve a shot at the WWL throne.

Where are the African-Americans, WWL ? Is WWL racist? This needs some looking into by some black activist groups for sure. It can only improve the crop of duds on WWL sports now.

Opinions?

You know, you're right, and I'm glad somebody finally brought this up. Might be time for some phone calls about this situation to their call in shows and letters to TV Focus and various Letters to the Editor.

Thinking about it now, why would there be no black personalities in the sports department of a station like WWL in a city like this? Not a one! Am I missing somebody? And how many are in their news department, if any?

I am not defending anyone here, let's get that straight first of all. I would have to agree that it is a good question about WWL's racial makeup. But I would also like to know who has turned down job offers from WWL/Entercom, white black or otherwise.

I'm not trying to be a crap stirrer here, but this all just occurred to me with the lineup WWL has almost totally revamped in the last year, apparently completely ignoring qualified African Americans. But in reply to your inquiry about how many turned down offers...I think a better question is how many African Americans were even considered and interviewed by WWL, which is a pre-requisite to turning something down. My guess is that...had they been interviewed and considered, I doubt all but Monica would have turned down WWL. It sounds like complete racial steering to me, while losing out on black candidates who would be a helluva lot more interesting in sports (and news) than the bottom feeders they have on the air now.

WWL, are you racist or not?

In a city like New Orleans WWL's air lineup should be at least 50-50. Who do they have representing the black populace? Monica. Their token.

you are a crap stirrer. you have issues with wwl. every post you make is anti-wwl. i'm not the first to notice, so i ask you.... were you fired by wwl? you seem to have a problem with everything they do. sounds like your the one who is racist. do you work there? how do you know who have applied for jobs? you don't, your just a faceless person who posts on a discussion board. you've made some pretty big accusations for a person who does not work on the inside. you make claims about something you know nothing about. in fact, your posts are worthless. go on with your bad unemployed self!

Marconi, why are you so defensive? I have *never* worked in radio, *never* applied for a job on any station, *neve* been turned down, and I've only been a listener who, I thought, was welcome to post on this board. I am merely making observations as a listener. And my observation is that WWL is following a racist path. You can make up scenarios upon which to attack me, but that's not the purpose of this thread. Please stick to the subject matter offered for discussion.

Anyway, Marconi, you ask how I know who turned an offer down?

I ask you, how do you know who it was offered to, or who was even invited to interview?

Let's be fair, I'm not trying to lock horns with you, it's just an honest thread.

sorry xmguy. i just hate the racist card. the best people apply for jobs and get the jobs one hopes. i guess if you look at the line-up perhaps it is for the most part white. however, I doubt a huge coporate giant would act in a obivous racist manner. not in this day and age, hopefully never. however, without any real inside proof inside their hiring/firing policies i think that might be a big call to make.
on this note then is que/wld racist?
i could do the white boy overnight shift....
is wnoe racist?
b97?
bayou?
rocking country??????????

sorry to be defensive xm dude but calling the racist card needs hard evidence otherwise i want the 12m-5a weekend shift on que.

OK, so where are the black voices on WWL ?

By the way, I'm black.

Why is it when someone post a thread about a radio station, folks who come to their defense always fall back on the assumption that someone was fired or they're a disgruntled employee? Maybe mac could be a corporate boot, licking lackey...or an unemployed lackey. It's a persons observation. BTW, if you're counting, they have three African-Americans on the radio side of the company.

*Three* African-Americans out of *how many* white voices on WWL?

The "King" of radio in the south is sitting on a keg of dynamite.

Go to Entercom's studios and find out yourself if they are racist? It never said in the EEO that they had to be a certain color on air, just that equal chance of getting hired on at the station in any position (and they have a EEO sheet online of where they recruited from) and I will admit yes I'm surprised that one of the sports team isn't african american but most of the others are either syndicated or temporary fillins that seemed to get the job when the original host had problems (like a death or a breakdown)

Same thing can be said of WRNO with only two african americans on air (Jesse Jackson who is syndicated and Andre who everyone is taking bets on for a breakdown redo)

According to the website WIST 690am has zero african americans

Maybe 1350 am could become like Citadel's WIBR in Baton Rouge.. Urban Talk... http://www.1300wibr.com/

If not, WGSO if I remember is still up for sale with local ownership perferred

Ummmmm.
I don't know much here, but, ah, I think the person who hires the on air staff for WWL radio, is, ah, a BLACK WOMAN!
How many white people does WQUE have on their on-air staff? WYLD? KMEZ?

Racism?

Probably not.

IMHO, racists see racism everywhere. I don't believe any of the stations in this city are racist.

Oh, one other thing, XMtra, your reference to Miss Pierre as a "token."

Nice.
Real classy.

I'm curious, what is the tipping point on "tokens."
Would 2 African Americans on WWL's staff still be "tokens?"
If a white on air personality worked at WQUE, would they be a "token" too?
If the staff were 20%, would all of them be "tokens" too.

I'm just curious about the math of "tokenism."

One would think that WWL would want some African Americans on their air staff and know the value of such a move in a "chocolate city". Not having one full timer in their sports department is hard to believe in this city. They should even have at least one black "big talker" on a night time show or something. There actually are many intelligent black people who would fit in nicely in their lineup.
