Isaac Hayes morning show

The news reports that Isaac Hayes died in Tennessee today.

Does anyone remember he had his own morning show in New York on Kiss-FM? It was the early part of this decade. It was a local show.

It was local from its inception in 1996. From what I remember, Kiss brought in the syndicated Tom Joyner around 1999/2000, but Isaac was hosting local breaks. Effectively, one writer put it best when he/she wrote that Isaac was effectively "babysitting the Tom Joyner show".

When the Isaac Hayes morning show started, it was completely local based.

Then Kiss put on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. I think to placate hayes, as not to suggest he was being cancelled, the station had him joining in during breaks. And at times, during the regular program, you'd hear him laughing over something Tom Joyner was saying. It really didn't sound good.

Correct, the name was Isaac Hayes & Friends.

Was Anne Trip still doing the news back then?

among other things... ;) ;)

but, seriously, and i don't remember where i indicated this, BUT...

the BIGGEST shame about Isaac Hayes' fame is that it really is divided between TWO generations of fans - let me explain:

1) the people my age (49) and older remember him for "Shaft" and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye" (with some of us ;) EVEN remembering him for ALL the GREAT songs he wrote for the Stax Records label, along with his partner David Porter...

2) the younger folk (40 and YOUNGER....) remember Isaac ONLY for his role as "Chef" on "South Park" (a show which I NEVER watched!) - if you told them that the guy who played "Chef" was the SAME guy who, 30 years earlier sang "This guy Shaft's a bad....", they would look at you like you're nuts!! Shame shame shame!!

IIRC, Tom Joyner on WRKS (starting in April 2001) was all about opportunity and timing -- Joyner's then-syndicator, ABC, wanted a New York clearance for his program; and Hayes' contract with the station was expiring just as his numbers were dropping. So, the "Tom Joyner Morning Show with Isaac Hayes" was simply to make the transition a smooth one.

Within about six months or so, Hayes was gone from the morning shift. He continued to do a Sunday night program for WRKS (which I believe he did from Memphis via ISDN) for a while until his contract expired in 2002.
