ISDN advice please

Working, but struggling. Thinking of getting ISDN in my house (central NJ) to pick up some freelance work to augment.

My work uses ADTRAN ISU 2X64's in all studios. You can get those for a song these days. Input welcome.

The prospect of getting ISDN & having it configured properly makes my throat close up.

Anyone who could point me in the right direction (either ISDN or some other gadget) with a focus on cost, would be my hero.

You guys are pros and have always been great, thanks -Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Verizon is not the friendliest Telco to deal with, particularly for ISDN. If you are literally "on the fringe" (e.g. not near the Telco central office) you may no longer be able to get ISDN, at least not from Verizon.

Regarding equipment. I presume you want to send audio? The Adtran 2x64 "terminal adapters" are cheap, but you need a codec to connect to them. In fact, everything is easier if you use a codec with a built-in terminal adapter and NT1. Figure about $1500 used on ebay, or contact me and I can give you the name of someone who has some for sale.

If the $ does not deter you then the next step is to get the manufacturers ISDN ordering information and then start talking to Verizon. Once you find someone that is vaguely aware of what ISDN BRI is fax them the ordering info from your manufacturer. Never fear, ordering ISDN now is no worse than it was back in 1994, but it does require some patience.

Best of luck.
