Isn't this what TV Land SHOULD be?

WWME Channel 23 in Chicago gets it! I look at the listings for it (which I've included today's listings)and wonder why TV Land doesn't include more of these classic show in it's lineup. I'm going to be curious to see how they fare in the ratings. Hopefully it will be a money maker and maybe we'll see other stations "change their format". Sorry, the radio guy part of me sneaked in there.

Check out Yahoo’s listings for the weekend stuff, but if you like Cagney and Lacey, Hawaii Five-O, Quincy, Baretta, Wild Wild West, Black Sheep Squadron, Underdog, Tennessee Tuxedo, Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley, The Odd Couple, MTM, Bob Newhart, Alfred Hitchcock, One Step Beyond and You Bet Your Life then you’ll like the weekend also. I’m curious what you all think.

Holy crap! I'd never change the channel! That's awesome and you're right. TV Land should take lessons from WMME.

I sure do hope that the station in Chicago decides to bring it to a national feed. It would be fun to watch all of the classic shows again. It's a whole lot better than what Nick at Nite and TV Land is showing thinking that Murphy Brown,Mad About You,Fresh Prince,Fatherhood(animated version of The Cosby Show),Hunter,Roseanne, and Full House are considered classics.

AHHHHHHHHHH- gloriously wonderful REAL television is alive and well in Chicago, wish I were there :)

Low Tide

TV Land isn't about to follow its audience from 20 years ago into the nursing home. But I can see cable channels (probably on the digital tier) devoted to TV from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. Then everyone will complain about shows that lasted for six weeks not being included.

Hey man, I didn't see The Mod Squad on that list!

The Mod Squad was outta sight!

You can't have a classic TV line up without "The Mod Squad" on it!!
Geez! Everybody knows that!

Can you dig what I'm saying to you, brother?

Well, anyway, I just thought I'd mention that show. Keep the faith, my man! Keep the faith!

Oh! And as Linc Hayes would always say......."Solid!"

That reminded me ...

Remember in the early days of the Sci-Fi Channel, when they had the "Series Collection" which had reruns of sci-fi shows from the 70s that lasted one season or less? They would just run all the episodes of a series and then start running another show, regardless of which day of the week they started or ended a run on.

I remember seeing some shows which haven't seen the light of day since.
______________

This channel sounds awesome! There are shows listed that I didn't know were even still on the air anywhere, or only on cable somewhere. I wonder what the chances of them expanding to a cable network would be.

I've had the thought before that TV Land should go to having different channels for different decades.

It seems that the only areas that show any older TV shows any more are in larger cities with enough stations that some are still totally independent. On a recent trip to the Dallas-Fort Worth area I saw several older shows that I hadn't seen in years, although they weren't all on one station like in Chicago.

WWOR's EMI service (the post-1990 superstation that lasted until 1996) had a similar concept using short-lived sitcoms from the Universal library, many of them never seen since their network runs. No on-screen title was given for the block, but it was listed in the schedules as "Comedy Wheel".

One of the shows used in "Comedy Wheel" was the 1985 CBS series "George Burns Comedy Week" an underrated (I think) Comedy Anthology. Another was "Coming Of Age" a 1988-89 sitcom (Also CBS) starring Alan Young as a spry senior citizen in an Arizona retirement community..

Unfortunately, that isn't possible, since WWME is only buying local *broadcast* rights for these programs. They'd have to obtain national rights for their programming in order to offer a national feed -- something that would be very expensive at the least, and it is unlikely that they'd be able to clear rights for all (or even most) of their schedule.

Considering that TV Land and Nick-at-Nite has several of these shows on their schedule, making Me TV a superstation is next to impossible.

But considering that Nick and TV Land have several shows that they're just sitting on and not using, it looks like the owners of the shows could put pressure on them to either show them or lose them (and possibly other shows that they also own even if they're being shown) when they come up for renewal. Perhaps that could open a door for another classic TV cable network to start.
Edited by ccmfan on 08/18/05 12:57 PM.

TV Land owns the national broadcast rights to several shows, namely "The Andy Griffith Show" and "I Love Lucy", which would basically prevent any other cable station from airing them on a national feed. Those shows can be aired on a local station, just not on a national cable feed.

Re: That reminded me ...

Another concern in making a new "SuperStation" would be getting cable/satellite systems to carry it.

Altho, with digital systems nowadays, the space problem might not be the hangup. Just getting a system to add it would be the toughest part.

Wishful thinking, I'm afraid. The syndicators get their money even if the shows are on the shelf. As long as the checks don't bounce, they don't care whether the shows are being shown or not.

Besides, a lot of TV Land's program inventory comes from Viacom anyway.
______________

Not necessarily, many shows on TV Land also come from Sony Pictures(Hunter,Bewitched,I Dream Of Jeannie,All In The Family,Sanford And Son,Good Times) and Warner Brothers(Night Court)

Unless you do the Al Gore and buy a respectable channel.
Perhaps someone with deep pockets can actually buy some useless channel like Current or HGTV and put classic TV on.
______________
