Good news for Seattle area local channel HD-deprived Directv Satellite viewers! Directv reached agreement, finally, with NBC (KING 5) and CBS (KIRO 7) to carry them in High Definition! Negotiations continue with ABC (KOMO 4), FOX, UPN, WB, FSNW, and even PBS. So, as Meat Loaf would sing: "Two Out of Eight Ain't Bad." Or it is "Eight's Enough?" There is a radio connection as Directv carries numerous Sirius Satellite Radio channels. A joy to watch Pearl Jam in HD on SNL last night. Watching Jeff Renner in HD on KING 5 was such a joy as well. :-X I know you Comcast Cable subscribers have had local channels in HD for awhile, but we Directv viewers are a little pumped, at least this one is. Just a little, very little, FYI, in case you're in between receiving your monthly statements from Directv which announced the HD agreements.

Yet as we keep our heritage news anchors the ability to see every wrinkle in high-def detail MAY not be a God-send! I like the anchors....I just may want to keep my eyes open for a "soft focus" option on the new HD sets. Same to be said for many of the people on the daytime soaps who have been there since the 1830's....some 100 years before television.

In that respect, LBB, HD certainly is not a plus for some on the close-ups. There are two great, but aging, female Seattle TV news anchors whose every wrinkle shows up, regardless of the piles of make up that gets plastered on their faces. A 'soft foucs' feature would be welcomed. I very much respect those two anchors because they're still good in both presence and journalism and have battled health issues, yet keep on comin' on!

The only argument I'd make, 70Radio, is that I have a hard time calling any of the news anchors "Journalists".Do they go out, do the interviews, and write all the copy? Um..no.Do they go to where *it* happened, do the interviews, and then use their notes to create the story? Um...no.They are news readers and nothing more.On more than a few occassions, I've seeing "anchors" become tongue tied and befuddled when the teleprompter goes down...They can barely articulate a cogent thought.Case in point....when there's a live, almost raw feed something occurring (Like a standoff, or a high speed chase in California)....listen..just listen. They hem, haw, and make noise just to have some kind of sound occurring as voiceover for the video. They often repeat themselves, interminably. They stutter, stammer, um and er a lot too.

This is really great news! Thank you so much for posting this. I hope they reach agreement with Fox and ABC in time for the new season. Any word on the progress being made? I'd wager that since KING 5 is going HD, then the other guys will too.

EVILLEMON...Directv is, to term it loosely, vague. They launched a couple of new satilletes a long time ago to accomodate local HD. Many markets much smaller than Seattle have had local HD channels for quite awhile. The Seattle locals, apparently, are tough nuts to crack when it come to Directv's negotiating with them for the rights to air them in HD. Only word I got when I spoke to a higher up technician was that the other stations in Seattle that I mentioned above will follow soon, hopefully sometime in June. FSNW is a question mark as to whether it's even considered a 'local' channel. TO.....Screwed.....you'd be surprised at how the two anchors to which I refer are very much involved in the community. Perhaps, they don't go out and get the 'hard' news, but they have done many a great feature story over the years--writing, producing and voicing them on camera. They are much more than just, as you state, news readers. A little insulting, on your part, to their integrity and many many years of devoted service to Seattle area viewers.

FSNW isn't in HD on Comcast either. At least there's hope that the stations come to the direct tv fold sometime soon. With Direct TV being almost half the price of Comcast and having better equipment, the local HD stuff is the only thing missing. I heard end of June as well.

I heard end of June as well.I didn't realize that Comcast didn't offer FSNW in HD. You're right about the cost of the two services. Directv in early April nearly gave away their service. We got the big 5LMB dish, I HD Rcvr (free) and 3 standard rcvrs for the bedrooms, plus 3 months of the premium channels free. Totally free installation AND $10 off the Total Plus package for the next 15 months. Not a plug for Directv, but I will say their current offer is nowhere near the early Spring offer!

That's when I got it too and it blows comcast away. Plus, the picture quality is great and their DVR (tivo) is way better than that Comcast DVR. The comcast one used to blow by half a show in a bout 2 seconds without telling the user anything. I've been nothing but happy with Direct TV. Not to plug them, but it's nice when a company does something right. Comcast has been killing consumers for a long time.

Wind that ever comes from the "wrong" direction.3. Snow4. Excess rain.My mom has two dishes. She lives in Palm Coast Florida.I spend 10 or so days a year at her house every Aug.30% of the time, "Please wait....Acquiring signal" appears as it's raining too hard.I've been using the COMCAST DVR for about 15 months now and it's never missed anything.I work evenings and record the prime time stuff I wanna see.I've never missed an episode of anything.

Ummm...okay...I had Dish network for a few years too. I've never seen the message "acquiring signal" (except on my Sirius) and I've never missed a show. But hey, have fun paying your thousand dollar a month Comcast bill.

That's where we differ:For $110 I get:phoneDSLTV: HBO, SHOW, TMC, MAX, and tons of HD channels. When I had comcast, the same package would have run nearly $200

I'll stick with what I got till something better comes along.Of course, it is all a matter of preference.
