It Don't Matter to Me

This song by Bread was on WAVO Charlotte a couple of weeks ago and it sounded so different from the way it sounds on Dial Global. I remember the song starting in a lower key, as it did on WAVO, than it does on Dial Global. I think Dial Global is condensing the song somehow.

I don't know if it is the case with "It Don't Matter to Me," but Dial Global edits or pads numerous songs to make them fit into the time-sensitive local option breaks at the start of the hour, bottom of the hour and about 10 to the hour. One of the more noticeable ones is Billy Joel's "Don't Ask Me Why," which is padded to fit three minutes by extending the intro. Another blatant edit is Johnny Mathis' 2010 cover of "Shenandoah," which has about a full 90 seconds excised. That one runs just on the regular playlist, but was butchered from about 4 minutes down to 2:30.

WAVO doesn't do this, but then they don't have to fit anything into a schedule except at the top of the hour, and then they don't even try. Which means some songs before the network news end up lasting a minute or so. In one case a song lasted all of five seconds before the station ID. But they play the long version of "Sing, Sing, Sing".

One song that could be easily edited to fit whatever time is needed is "Take Five". Just adjust the piano solo.

Dial Global plays a different version of this song. It's more of a "stripped" version...which sounds as if it's only David Gates, and leaves the rest of the group out. It has very little percussion. Personally I don't like it. I don't know why they play that version instead of the "standard" version you obviously heard on WAVO. I've never heard it played like that ANYwhere before!

When WAVO got off the satellite I was under the impression they bought a package of just music from Dial Global. I could be wrong about that but they did make a very easy transition.

There's too much variety for them to have gotten it from Dial Global. Though it was a Jones affiliate, and Dial Global took them over.

I think Gates did a solo version at some point, didn't he? If it's the same version I'm thinking of, I used to hear it often on KKAD. I sort of liked it, myself.

I believe I once read the original version had more of a stripped sound. By the time they released it as a single they polished it up.

If you search for the song on iTunes, the "stripped down" version is, indeed, looks to be the original.
