It happened again: 92.3 Now FM unlistenable on an HD radio

nd2023

Banned
Tonight I was listening to 92.3 Now. The HD1, HD2, and HD3 were dead air, analog was normal. The call letters were " HD-FM". When listening on a portable HD radio within the 60 dBu contour, there was dead air whenever the HD kicked in. It was like that for at least an hour. This is one situation I wish I had the feature to disable HD reception on my HD radio.

This just goes to show that even in market 1 nobody is listening in HD. I don't see a single post on their Facebook page from listeners complaining about the dead air on HD1. Even the station could care less if it's broadcasting in HD.

This is at least the second time 92.3 had dead air on its HD1.

Several NYC stations have had their HD signals go on and off over the last 7-10 days, especially on the overnights, leading one to believe that possibly there's work being done at the Empire State Building's antenna mast. Some stations have had no interruption; possibly they're located on different parts of the antenna that are (at least for now) unaffected by any maintenance.

It is quite difficult to enjoy an HD broadcast (and thusly become a fan of the medium) when there seem to be so many inherent technical problems just keeping the signal on the air. Imagine if the analog signals were off the air as frequently as the HDs!

At least on the Insignia HD portable radios, the signal defaults to analog if there's no HD1 signal present. Of course, it's no help if you were trying to listen to an HD2, -3, or -4 broadcast as those would vanish completely.

... which is the recommended option for HD radio in general, IMHO...

... So you're the one? ::)

Hard to believe in a product when the driving force behind it doesn't even care enough to keep the information about its service updated. The HD Radio Alliance's website was relaunched several months ago with a highly touted redesign, but they can't even be bothered to keep the listings on HD signals in the nation's largest market correct. New York's HD station roster still lists 92.3 as Rock, though it's been Top 40 as "92.3 Now" for how many years now...?

And 105.9, while it reflects the new WNYC ownership, still lists "Tropical" as the format of the main signal.

Well, they *DID* get at least ONE fairly recent change correct:

WSDK 1550 was bought by my former employer, and went on the air early this year. They have it listed correctly as "Christian". (It was Radio Disney before it went dark sometime in 2010.)
