It has started....Monsoon Watch 2012 (this time, there is "no hype!")

Just saw an ad for Channel 5 "no hype" news hyping their expected Monsoon Forecast! Yes, "no hype", but, they will be there for every dust storm, haboob, wind storm, lightning strike and rainstorm. Make sure you don't miss any second of their "no hype" broadcast, and to remind you of their "no hype", expect to see the commercial about the monsoon 10x a day, because, its "no hype" news. ::) ::)

Local TV news is like the special olympics, you have to give them a medal for trying, bless their hearts.
 
They are just "telling it like it is"!!! :D

Oh, yes, and be sure to check cbs5az.com for the "backstory" on the Summer Monsoon season.
 
Over the last few weeks, almost all of the stations in town have mentioned that one or more of their award winning always accurate weather team was out in the field filming a portion of their "MONSOON" special. So in the coming weeks we can enjoy the 30 minute specials showing lighting (and the house or wild fire it caused), high winds and blowing dust (with or without the term 'haboob"; remember some people don't think that term is proper here in AZ); the caution to never cross a flooded street (and the helicopter rescue of the Hummer and the "Stupid Motorist" who was driving) and last but not least, the danger of falling power lines (and how to exit your car if there are live electrical lines on it. Hop-Skip and Jump).
 
I heard 3TV announce that their 30 minute "Monsoon 2012" special would be on Wednesday, June 6 (I thought I heard 6:30pm).

Have not heard any of the other stations announce when their big production would be on the air.

Yes. And it's just in time!!! April mentioned that there may be some monsoonal moisture creeping into Eastern Arizona within the next 10 days or so. ;)

Just watched the 3TV Monsoon special. It was done a little different the the usual annual pre-monsoon fest we have seen in the past.
They had two storm chasers including Mike Olbinski who took the photo sequence of last July's "haboob", talk about their efforts to capture AZ weather. There was another segment discussing the increase in dust storms and the increase in valley fever cases. They did have a few of the usual subject like strong winds knocking down power poles and the dangers of flash flooding. Another segment talked about the results of last years Wallow Fire and how just a little rain may cause flash flooding for Greer and other communities in the White Mountains.

All in all, it was not a bad 30 minutes.

Tucson gets better monsoon storms than the Valley. Maybe her knees will get wet.
 
ABC 15 Monsoon Special: The program had the usual information regarding the monsoon. It began with the usual name dropping, "I'm CHIEF METEOROLOGIST..." and then went into haboob mode. (Considering how many local stations are trying to downplay using this term, this was the opposite). The word 'haboob" was used over a dozen times in the half hour. They also continued to call it "the monsoon season" (you know the "seasonal change in winds season"). Again, most of the info was the typical monsoon info: what is the monsoon, dust storms/haboobs, thunder/lightning and flash floods (with the usual, don't be a stupid motorist).

The winning moment was when they showed a water rescue that happened in Los Angeles (the guy that was pulled from the LA River with his pants being ripped off by the current).

Because of the weather blowing in from the southeast, Amy Murphy gave updates during the break, starting off with the marketing correct intro "ABC15 Dessert Doppler HD Forecast Center" during the first break and finally just calling it "ABC15 Weather Center".
 
Well, right on cue the first major dust storm of the season rolled into S. Tempe and Chandler.

Monsoon = "shut the windows.....QUICK!"

They needed video of water over 1 1/2 inch deep. ;D

Every time a station pulls this sort of stunt they lose more credibility.
