It is time to ask the question

Outside of an all-news format like WBBM, does live and local matter any more? While I certainly prefer it, I am a month away from 60 and hardly anyone's target democraphic. What are your thoughts?

Can you point to a specific major market competitive situation where "recorded and out of town" beats "live and local"?

Yeah if you are more of a listener of WGN radio, as most of their programming are live and local hosts that host their shows right from their studios. They only have a 1 hour block on Sunday mornings that are syndicated programming, the rest of their shows are hosts that host from their studios. Other then WGN Radio there are not much talk stations that airs a lot of live and local talk, WVMP ESPN Radio is more sports talk even through they have a lot of local sports talk shows from mid mornings to at least the night hours. WLS AM is just about to go to almost all syndicated programming, with the expection of tier morning show, and i still have no idea who will be in at 5 PM to do a show.

Steve Harvey on V103. Although technically he spends some time in Chicago.

When does he spend any time in Chicago? He used to have his old talk show that taped in the NBC towers, and when he was in town to tape his show he would broadcast his syndicated morning show from Chicago, and he has moved his talk show to Los Angeles, so really when does he spent time (if at all) in Chicago?

When does he spend any time in Chicago?

Whether he does or not, he's #3 in Chicago morning drive, behind Mix and BBM. So obviously his geography doesn't affect his ratings.

He's among the highest rated morning shows in most of the markets where he airs, including New York and DC.

His audience cares nothing about live and local.

Yep I know, his name always comes up when Robert Feder reports the ratings for the mornings, midays, afternoons, and evenings. I am amazed that people in Chicago, didn't go phooey on you since you took your talk show out of Chicago, and stopped tuning into his radio show.

What are the odds the average V103 listener knows Steve Harvey has a daytime talk show?

What is the format competitor for V103? Who is the morning man for the competing format?

I don't think he's competing with BBM (Or Mix?) Does he have any real competitors?

What are his ratings in NY and DC? ...and who is the format competitor there?

I don’t think as many people care anymore in larger cities. It’s so watered down nowdays that it can be difficult to tell the difference. And now with Spotify and streaming people just connect bluetooth and listen that way.

In smaller, more rural areas that live and local factor becomes more important. It’s their connection to the community.

WVAZ, WGXI and WPWX are the urban / Urban AC stations. WVAZ is #4 in mornings.

DC has multiple urban and urban AC stations: WMMJ, WKYS and to an extent WPGC. Harvey averages #3 in mornings in 12+.

There are lots of cases with talents like Steve Harvey, The Kid Kraddik Show, Elvis Durean, Bobby Bones, Ryan Seacrest, El Bueno, La Mala y el Feo, as well as a number of regional smaller station count networks.

Nobody cares. Way back when Gary Owens announced "Live from Beautiful Downtown Burbank" (as did the Johnny Carson show), programmers knew that local was meaningless if the show was entertaining... which is why they picked a city which is neither beautiful nor has a real downtown so they could poke fun at "localism".

Do you think people tune in for Harvey? Or is V103 such a dominant station, dominant in every daypart that he just carries them along?

As a consultant, do you think some directed programming on WGXI and WPWX could beat Harvey on WVAZ?

I am not familiar enough with Harvey's show today to make that evaluation.

The advantage of being on a #1 station (average, 12+) is undoubted. But I think that he starts the day off strong for the station, and they would not have either the image or the all-day big numbers without him.

Only old radio people care about syndication in and of itself. There just isn't that audience that says "I'm not listening to Steve Harvey/Elvis Duran/Bob and Tom/etc because they aren't sitting in a little room downtown". They may or may not like those shows but it has nothing to do with the actual location of the talent.

I'm not sure at what point Johnny Carson's show purported to be "Live from Beautiful Downtown Burbank." As I recall, Ed McMahon regularly announced the opening of the show as follows: "From Hollywood, it's the Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson."

WGN Radio

I think it is time for this question to be asked and answered. Does WGN Radio ave some sort of curse to them? The latest company to acquire Tribune Media, Nexstar is reported as to having only interest to owning WGN TV, and not WGN Radio as well, and they are looking to sell WGN Radio, and who knows to who. So that makes me wonder if WGN Radio has a curse to them, or is it Steve Cochran the curse as nobody wants to own a station with him on the lineup. As Sinclair that had pretty much tried to acquire Tribune Media had no interest in owning WGN Radio, and stalled off punching the station to lead Tribune Media to termite the deal, and sued them. And now Nexstar has no interest in owning WGN Radio, even with WGN Radio leaving their longtime home in the old Tribune Tower building, and moved to new radio studios this past June. Or is it just because they are that expensive since they are one of how many more local talk stations in America, with little to no syndicated programming?
