It looks like 106.7 has changed formats (slightly)

106.7 is still calling itself Generation X, yet it is not playing the same music.

They now sound like they did back when they were just Radio 106.7.

Today I heard Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man" and thought something was up. That song was released in 2009 and has only ever been played on CD101 in this market.

Looking at their playlist it is obvious that a change has been made. They seem to be playing songs that are alternative but made it to mainstream.

Looking at yes.com, it looks like the change happened Friday Night just before midnight.

Snoop Doggy Dogg played at 11:47 PM and is basically the last rap song on the station (besides a couple of Eminem songs on Sunday afternoon).

11:55 PM Friday - Staind - It's Been Awhile
11:59 PM Friday - 311 - All Mixed Up

Look at their recent playlists on yes.com and tell me if this looks like format change.

Well there definitely seems to be a broadening of the playlist even further in an alternative direction and away from hip hop.  That said, right now they still sound way more mainstream than Radio 106.7 did, with loads of tunes that were Top 40 hits in the 90's and even the 80's.  Even Madonna and Prince.  Time will tell whether this is part of an evolution back to alternative or not.  But at the moment I don't think we can conclude anything other than "adjustment."  In fact, they're playing some hip hop (Ludacris) as I type this, followed by O.M.D.'s "How Bizarre."

These songs, that would have never appeared on the station a week ago, have appeared (some multiple times) since just before midnight on Friday night:
The Bravery - Believe
Ben Folds Five - Brick
Phoenix - 1901
MGMT - Kids
Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man
The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes
Muse - Uprising
Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body
My Chemical Romance - Sing

These artists were heard (and have been heard regularly for months on 106.7) but have not been on 106.7 for more than 48 hours:
Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, TLC, 2Pac, One Republic, Kayne West, Will Smith, Pink, Bon Jovi, NSYNC, Black Eyed Peas

On Saturday, they played MGMT twice in a span of 80 minutes. Wow.

This hour from Saturday does not look like a "Generation X" station at all. All of these artists (with the exceptions of Trapt and Eminem could easily be from CD101 @ 102.5)
Saturday from 7-8 AM:
U2 - Beautiful Day
Goo Goo Dolls - Slide
Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire
Trapt - Headstrong
INXS - Need You Tonight
MGMT - Time To Pretend
The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes
Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box
Incubus - Wish You Were Here
Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest For The Wicked
Eminem - Without Me
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
Adele - Rolling In The Deep

Hair bands seem to be MIA too.  Will be interesting to see where this shakes out.  At the moment it's like a very conservative alternative -- more conservative than Radio 106.7 was, and way more mainstream than 102.5.  I note that on CC's corporate website they call the Gen-X stations "Alternative," but then again they have plenty of strange station classifications on there.  As for the Gen-X label, there's nothing to say the station can't keep it regardless, as long as they still lean heavily to the 90-'s and early 2000's.  The positioning might have to change some.  In fact, the positioners I've heard tonight already sound different.

EDIT: It is sounding more alternative by the minute....

Good call! I noticed this as well and was wondering if I was going crazy. It was about time for some kind of change. The only good book Gen X really got was its launch. I was worried about that because usually decade stations don't work too well because of the tight playlists. Gen X sounded extremely repetitive and there's only so much generation X music you can rotate that a loyal listener won't get tired of. A lot of us thought Gen X would last for awhile and then eventually flip to Hot AC to take on Mix, but it sounds as if they're a mix of the following formats: AAA, Alternative, Modern AC... you're hearing a lot more of the 2000s like Adele, 30 Seconds To Mars, and Mumford And Sons. It reminds me of the old Frequency 94-1 in Cinci, except definitely not as random. It'd be cool if Gen X evolved into a Modern AC format like Click 101-5 in Dayton. At this point, it sounds pretty Modern AC (AAA-leaning) to me. I hear a lot of these songs (except for the few 80s) on Click. The positioners definitely have changed and the music promos are all alternative-sounding. How long before they dump the Gen X name is the question and what will their final music identity be? Things should get interesting!

That playlist, with a few exceptions, sounds a TON like CLiCK 101.5 in Dayton. Good call ljo! CLiCK doesn't play MGMT or The Raconteurs or Eminem, but they play almost everything else on that list(CLiCK LOVES their Adele). They ought to bite the bullet and just call themselves 106.7 The X, since they already have the WCGX calls in place. 103.9 The X in Dayton did something similar back in 1998 when they lost the rights to their original name "The Edge". Their calls are WXEG, so they simply became "The X".

I noticed when they weren't playing classic Rick Dees and the weekly top 40 something was up. I also noticed they were playing song that were fairly current.

False. The only one of these three that has played this afternoon is Snoop. For some reason they have left in Eminem and Snoop but most of the rest of the artists are either alternative or on the borderline of mainstream.

Whatever they do, 106.7 will still ultimately be dogged by that deficient signal. A few nights ago I was driving up High street from downtown and the stereo was fading in and out on 106.7, surprisingly even worse than some of the rimshot Class A's. As with the previous music switch the initial interest may be enough to mask the issue, but even if so it will come back. Too bad CC couldn't somehow come up with a signal for 106.7 that was resistant to the "Dispatch Tower Curse." It's even spotty in some areas on the northern arc of the outerbelt, at least indoors.

On the FB page they claim Dees will be back.

I saw that comment about Dees as well. If they are going in a Modern AC/Alternative direction, there is no need for Dees or Static Beach anymore. I would be preparing for a rebranding. "Gen X" isn't gonna be around much longer.

You know what. I was streaming, and they probably left those in for the on-air breaks. They should probably clean that up if they are shifting.

I hate those song fillers on the online stream. I rather hear PSA's and promos so if I'm not paying attention, I don't mistake a song filler for a song in rotation. However, that's why Yes.com exists :D

106-7 The X would be cool, especially if they used the awesome voiceguy that The X in Dayton uses, even if it would be more Modern AC.

What if they brought back the Channel Z name?

There would be one very sad aspect of seeing 106.7 drop the Gen-X moniker, especially if they drop the calls, too:

"WCGX" represented the first time in years a Columbus station had come up with perfect calls - Columbus Generation X. Rolls off the tongue, too.

Usually we end up with something dyslexic, like "BWR" for BREW.  Even Jack-FM was unable to get the classic Jack-type calls ending in JK, although I guess WJKR is better than WJRK, which sounds like something else.  I guess WODC isn't too bad for 93.3.  Better than WOCD.

I know, all totally irrelevant from a business standpoint.  But worth noting...for two seconds, anyway.

Clear Channel owns those WWHT call letters on a CHR in Syracuse New york.
When WWHT was in Columbus, it was owned by the late Robb Case. They flipped those calls to WAKS eventually. CC also has the WAKS calls for one of their Kiss stations I believe.
