It looks like Cumulus is getting ABC

Report: Cumulus The Front-Runner For ABC

Citing sources close to the deal, the Drudge Report website today says that Cumulus has emerged as the leading candidate to purchase ABC Radio's stations and the ABC Radio network.

Executives from both Entercom and Emmis have recently expressed interest in acquiring the ABC assets, but Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey — who has stayed fairly quiet on the issue — is reportedly closest to reaching Disney CEO Bob Iger's asking price. Snagging the ABC assets would be quite a coup for Dickey, whose newly formed Cumulus Media Partners — a partnership among Cumulus and several equity investors — just paid $1.2 billion for Susquehanna Radio.

That would mean Cumulus would own KSCS, The Wolf, The Twister, WBAP, KLIF and The Bone.

That's about three country stations, one talk station and one Bone too many IMHO.

> Twister, WBAP, KLIF and The Bone.

You forgot KMKI - which may be the strongest AM signal over the area.

I prefer disgusting and shameful. That's 5 more stations they can ruin with their fast and cheap attitude.

Although the more I think about it, wouldn't these two deals put them over the cap in D/FW? I smell a divestment...
Edited by bluescreen on 11/14/05 08:05 PM.

"IF" the deal goes through, expect The Bone,The Twister, and either KLIF or radio Disney to be spun off.ABC-Susquehana employees update that resume' and audition and start searching now despite their"Nobody's going to get laid off" speech.

Radio takes a nose dive even further.

No, Cumulus needs to spin off the radio network if they get that because I don't think they've ever ran a radio network before have they?

KMKI wont go with the rest of ABC.. they are not selling the Radio Disney stations.

Don't forget "America's Favorite Radio Station," KTCK

Creative formats.

> KMKI wont go with the rest of ABC.. they are not selling the

That is good news - its one of the more creative formats in Dallas.

Think about the last year of posts. Which stations have the most fanatical following?

I post about Radio Disney and KXEZ. Somebody else about the Ranch. Someone else about other country rim shots. There is KMAD and KLAK that get posts occasionally. People liked KEGL. Some like KVSN. Some like Air America. Everybody remembered and loved KLIF.

A lot of fanatical followings for non-conglomerate owned stations, or stations doing something really different, rim shots, etc. I haven't seen many fanatically devoted posts about the rest of the main, highly rated stations. People don't seem inspired by cookie cutter stations. But they listen - for now - until they all get XM or Sirius.

But wait - IBOC will solve all of radio's problems and listeners will flock back to hear radio mediocrity in glorious digital on $400 radios.

The Network is not up for sale just the stations

I'm with ya on this Bruce. HD radio, like HDTV, is an overpriced novelty. I don't care how crisp HDTV is, it doesn't justify blowing $1000 on a TV. B&W to Color was an amazing leap. Color to more color isn't.

Are you sure about that? Not according to this from Radio & Records.com Or maybe I just read it wrong, Check below:

Contacted by R&R, an ABC rep declined to comment on the reports.

R&R's calls to Cumulus, Entercom and Emmis were also not immediately returned.

No you didn't read it wrong, they just have a misprint . According to those in the know at ABC only the O&O's are up for sale.If the network is part of the deal,it's news to them.

Wow...this has got to be the most "get off my lawn" esc old man statement ever made here. OK Grandpa Simpson, HDTV is Glorious...and yeah, I spent a grand on a new TV...cause I don't have cataracts like you to and appreciate the finer quality.

But wait, I'll blow your mind with this one, I bought an HD radio for my car as well, cause the quality's amazing...and it sounds 10000% better than XM or Sirius' over compressed "we need to lower the bandwidth to make more room for another Fox news feed" B.S.

I'm hardly old. My beef with HDTV is the government and industry's attempt to ramrod it down people's throats. When color came online did your B&W TV stop working or need a new set-top box? No.

Come 12/31/06 if you don't own an overpriced HDTV or have the set-top box you're screwed. Besides, it's television for god's sake. I could really care less if HDTV is so clear I can see the pimples on Dennis Franz's ass. If you've got that big of a chub over a freakin TV set you obviously don't get out much.

LMAO!!! Absolutely Classic!

Re: HUH?!?!?!?

> LMAO!!! Absolutely Classic!

I know! My first demo of HD TV was a stupid football game. Who the ____ cares if you can see the sweat run down the faces. BLEAH! My brother in law got one - as the local news anchor on the right got still - the algorithms "froze" her and you could see more and more detail eventually showing every pore. Then she moved and it went away. Over and over again. Now THAT was really wierd and totally surreal to look at. And with weak signals on analog TV, you get a little background confetti. Weak signals on HD - huge rectangles / complete dropouts. MUCH more annoying.

So - what are the artifacts like on HD radio? How seamless is "blend" going to be on digital AM when you drive under a power line, hearing perfect digital, then an abrupt increase in volume to power line hash? At least with analog you can hear it coming and turn the radio down. This is going to be a safety issue with people startled by very loud interference.

I thought I had read last week that the Radio Disney and ESPN Radio properties were NOT part of the package.

Re: HUH?!?!?!?

Well, you have a slight reprieve actually. Now the date all analog TV transmitters must "pull the big switch" and go bye-bye is April 1, 2009. But John McCain may change his mind many times between now and then, so the actual date of darkness could be vastly different. With any luck by that time, the price of HD receivers will drop.

That is the intent of the delay, plus next year being an election year, most Americans do not own an HD receiver and could ill afford one by the deadline.
