It Looks Like Kiss 95.7 Is Playing Goldfrapp :)

Yeah, I read that over on the CHR board. I am mighty surprised that Kiss 95.7 is playing this,,, Most of the U.S dance stations wont even touch it. Anyway, I think this song could do FAIR on CHR, but not many PDs are going to give it a chance. You know that their are alot of CHRs that still wont play Cascada, and some that didnt even play Madonna-HUNG UP.

Why is this?
Do they not think that it is a "real" dance song or would a typical dance listener not go for it?

> Most of the U.S dance stations wont even touch it.
______________
Because you dance to disco but you still like rock.

Maybe they confused it with "Spirit in the Sky". j/k. Good song that is much more alternative (and probably viewed that way by programmers) than the straight up dance tracks that have been working at Pop. IMHO.

I can see how it would be viewed that way.
I still wouldn't mind seeing it and other songs similar to it being embraced by dance radio.
Possibly in the evening if they aren't already?
I gre up listening to stations that did a fair amount of dayparting and I've always been a fan of it.

For about a year time across 89/90 we had a dance station in Houston that played mainstream dance hits during the day and from 10p-2a had a show called Alternative Static where they would play the more alternative oriented dance musics...club music from Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Airplane Crashers, etc.
I'd like to see someone daypart a dance station like that today.
Maybe they do, I don't know, but I'm never listening online in the evenings or overnight.

You're talking about Energy 96.5 right? I remember hearing it when I was visiting Houston in 89.
I also read awhile back that 104 KRBE's (or Power 104 as it was then known) first live club broadcasts were from clubs that played a lot of those legendary Industrial acts you mentioned.
I also remember looking at Billboard's radio playist sections of 1990 and 1991, and both KRBE and its then rival 93 Q were fairly friendly towards what was then called College/Modern Rock. Music by the likes of The Las, The Cult, and the more famous bands like R.E.M, Jesus Jones, and EMF.
In fact, it was this heritage or openness to Modern Rock, that 104 KRBE was able to evolve into a very successful Modern Rock leaning CHR in the mid 90s.

Yup, that was Energy.
Man, I used to love that station.
I used to love the billboard they had where the rings in this logo would light up.
knrj.gif

I wasn't listening to any live club boradcasts until about 90 or 91, but whe I started listening, 104 was doing and in studio mix (not sure if it was their own or if it was canned) on Fridays and a broadcast from Bayou Mama on Saturdays.
They did play some of the industrial stuff, but for the most part it was a little more mainstream dance (Deee-Lite, New Order, Erasure, DePeche Mode, Xpansions).
93Q was broadcasting from Detour on Friday nights and DV8 on Saturdays.
both of those were more industrial with the likes of Front 242, Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, Dirty Harry, and Gruesome Twosome.
Sometimes they'd even throw in some Ice T and Jane's Addiction.
They also did another broadcast from DV8 on Sundays called "Dangerous Disco".
After Energy Switched to MIX 96.5 in the summer of 1990, 93Q picked up on Alternative Static, later rebranding it as "The 93Q Zone".
They eventually went country in September of 91.

I used to tape all of that stuff back in my Junior High and High School days.
Sometimes I'd like to beat myself over the head for getting rid of them.

Sounds like Top 40 radio in H-Town had some great specialy shows in the late 80s/early 90s.
Did 93 Q abandon CHR around the same time that 97.9 The Box came on with its Rhythmic/CHR format?

BTW, do you remember a few years back (from the late 90s to early 2000s) when 104 KRBE would broadcast from The roxy on Saturday nights? I believe Mike Anthony was the resident DJ, and he always played the most upfront Trance tunes (and a bit of Mainstream Dance too). He would play great records like Lange "You Put Me In Heaven With Your Touch", Miss Shiva "Dreams", Rank 1 "Airwave", Armin "The Sound of Goodbye", and of course Delerium "Silence (Airscape Remix)".

A lot of times if I wasn't out partying on a Saturday night I'd either spend the afternoons listening to Radio Gong 96.3 Munich for their Deep Space nights from Babylon nightclub, or listening to KRBE at Roxy and Wild 94.9 San Francisco's House Nation.
Other good shows from that time: The Late Night Laboratory on Power 96 Miami, and Saturday nights on 95.3 Party Orlando were good too.

A question ive always wanted to know was, how many Energy stations have their been in the U.S,,, I think their were a few, other than the famous Energy Chicago, and Energy 108 Toronto..... Another question would be, what are some of the Dance stations that we have had in the U.S, during the 80s and 90s? What markets were they in?

97.9 came on as The Box Spring 91, I think in April.
93Q did a sort of soft swich to a more rock leaning Top 40 sometime in the Summer of 91 before the full flip to Country.

I wasn't listening to club broadcasts as much during that time because I was working and going to school a lot and much of that time was on weekend evenings.
I know the name Mike Anthony was a name that I heard on some of the Roxy broadcasts.
Mark D was there most of the time though I think.

KNHC added it this week. I don't know how it will do, but Goldfrapp has historically done pretty well in the specialty shows on KNHC. Of course the problem with embracing this type of track is that it is polarizing. Seems people love it or hate it. I'm hoping more of them love it. Call me an optimist.

I believe the labels target is mainstram t40 though. Seems they think it could be massive. I would like to see that happen for Goldfrapp.

I think you'll find this year that radio is going to realize that Electronic artists like Ladytron, Goldfrapp and others because hip hop has reached over saturation and 18-34 years olds are going to show strains in that format. It's about time,.

K-97 was a Dance station at one point? i thought they were always Urban.

I just remember them evolving from CHR/Pop straight to CHR/Rhythmic. Granted many Rhythmic CHRs in the early 90s played way more then Hip Hop and R&B, but Kube was never as Dance friendly as B-96 Chicago, or Seattle's own C-89.5

> KMXV/Kansas City
When? They were Dance Frienly in the mid 90s, but they were still a CHR/Pop outlet. If anything, maybe Mix 100.7 Terre Haute should be included ;)

Yes WHRK was famous for throwing in Dance cuts and remixes from early Madonna to Expose, since they started out as a Disco station and even after Disco's demise they still added a club hit from time to time. They also had a reputation for throwing in a Bryan Adams track. But it wasn't until late 1989 that they officially evolved to Urban. Plus they were one of the original 17 stations that reported to Billboard's Crossover panel when it was launched 19 years ago this month(February 17th, 1987).

Might as well include them since they did play N-Trance/Rod Stewart's "Do You Think I'm Sexy", Ultra Nate's "Free" and Gina G's "Ooh Oh(Just A Little Bit)". But you're right they had more of a R&B/Hip-Hop component.

Might as well include them anyway, given their eurodance leanings.

Not all the time, and I used to listen to that station when I was living in the Fresno area.

Re: Nobody Yet Mentioned WHHH

I cant beleive No one has Mention WHHH 96.3 in Indianapolis. They were a Dance Friendly Rhythmic-Leaned Chr when they first launched on OCT.30 1991. They even had Casies Top 40, and Open House Party back then. Some of the Dance songs I remember WHHH playing was Kym Sims-Too Blind to see it,, London Beat-Thinkin about you-(12 inch verson) Klf-3.am Eternal, Right Said Fred-Im too Sexy,Captain Hollywood project- more and more, Rozella-Everybodys Free. But in 1995 WHHH dropped all of its Dance mixshows, in favor of the Street Mix, with all hip hop, But they kept Dance and POP in their normal Playlist up until 98-99, In fact the last Dance song I ever heard WHHH play was La-Bouche-Be my lover, (a gold at that time) Heard about 5.oo A.M on a sunday morning in May of 1999, coming home after an all night paper route, but they still would play a (POP) song sometimes. Finally in 2001 they got aquired by radio one, and dumped off the remaining Britney, Backstreet, and N,sync records, and Changed the positioner to Blazin Hip Hop & R&B.

Hoosier 96.3!

I remember spending a day/night in Indi back in 93 and BOTH 99.5 ZPL and Hoosier were Dance friendly.
