"IT" on the 80's

Wow, I'm sitting here trying to listen to IT and I just have to ask, did the music really suck this bad in the early 80's? This is like listening to elevator music. I can't take IT any more.

Thank you! I'm actually a big fan of the 80s, but this is unlistenable. This was my first time hearing IT and I'm not impressed.

These were the hits of that time, back in 1980. I was playing them at that time when they were new. Disco died that year, and people gave up there Dancin' Shoes for Cowboy Hats when John Travolta's "Urban Cowboy" came out.
There were more country crossovers then anytime I can remember. AC ruled even on the CHR charts for the first 2 & 1/2 years of the decade. And Album Rock sales slid compared to the early to mid 70's. Rockers were still there, but not like the 70's. Get use to it.

I happen to really like that time and the different types of music that was on the radio at the time. Not long afterwards, radio formats became to narrow and left a lot of great music behind, not just what you might consider some moldy oldies. Believe me, there is plenty of hairband rock to come in future years, just keep listening.

I think IT has been great - better this time than other previous IT's by expanding the playlist even more.

Give it another day or so and 1983 will hit. That's really where it all changed and got MUCH MUCH better. I'm with you on the very early 80's years (80-81). That was kind of a time of flux with a lot of slow stuff. Then the big new wave/synth rock sound and the big 80's CHR stations all hit with a brand new sound around late 82 into 83. I'd say 83 to 86 is one of the best times in CHR/Top 40 since the 60's. So I definately will be checking out the mid and into the late 80's. You can probably skip 80-81 and not miss much.

Yes, it did.

Barbara Streissand had #1 records for multiple weeks in the early '80's.

That should tell you everything you need to know about those years.
______________

I did. Every hour and 15 minutes on 104 KZZP. It's embarassing to admit to some songs in this decade.

Now that's a good song that stands up better to time.
______________

The early 80's saw the birth of Soft AC - as a format with a broad footprint. KHTZ, in LA - I was there - was the number one music station for a while.

This version of "IT" is the deepest yet - and well worth the hours of listening.

Yeah you're right about that. My favorite 80's music was 84 onward. There was so much variety between rock, new wave, dance, R&B, etc. This earlier stuff just makes you appreciate how good things were later on.

You hit that pretty well on the mark. 86-87 it started to decline again with a rise in 89. Then the 1st day of 1990 it was never the same again. 1985 it peaked as all artists from different genres and styles clashed on the same charts until it all exploded and seperated to what we have today.

83 - 85 - the BEST years for Rick Dees!

While there was a LOT of A/C, soft rock on the top 40 charts, the BEST "Top 40" stations of the day were able to balance it out quite well. Hot Hits WCAU-FM/Philly comes to mind.

1981-1982 was my favorite era! Juice Newton next to Billy Squier next to Little River Band next to Rick James next to Oak Ridge Boys next to Rush next to Hall & Oates next to Air Supply etc...

As someone pointed out below, the early 80's was a confused time in top 40. Between the disco backlash and Urban Cowboy...
______________

Music of today, this year sux.

I can't stand the music of today especially this year. The rock and everything else has a new style that started last year and I hate it. Even the artists from the 90's past are using that terrible new style. Plus there is way too much rap crap polluting the airwaves. This decade started out with some good music until late last year.

The 80's had some of the best music next to the 90's.
