It Pays To Advertise (?)

I watch comparatively little commercial television as it's broadcast; I tape most of what I watch, even the news and Sunday morning talking head shows, so I can fast-forward through the commercials. I noticed however that in late spring, two collossally boring radio stations ran TV spots for their outlets during this period: WMJX-FM 106.7 and WCRB-FM 102.5. I never bothered to check out the 'MJX spots...but I did pause, rewind and view and listen to a couple of WCRB's commercials. In one, they echoed the ridiculous claim that mere exposure to putative classical music made the auditor smarter! Yeah, right. And what did this expenditure of real $$$$$$$$$$ bring about? In the just-released Arbitrends for summer, WMJX dropped 8-tenths of a percentage point...from a less lofty perch, WCRB dropped half a percentage point! (Oh yes, WJIB keeps creeping up.)

... and WEEI is still #1 in 12+!

Again, Kudos to Bob Bittner for the incredibly increasing ratings of WJIB. This book, WJIB tied WBOS!

Mike is down, if only a little. However, I'm thinking that Mike is taking listeners away from WBOS, if you look at the most recent two books, it seems that around half a share of WBOS is missing.

The ratings of Frank FM are growing too, Frank is almost as high as The River, despite that the 92.5 signal is far superior to 106.3, and doesn't even try to target Boston. Frank has over a share, beating FNX as well.

As for WMJX, it could be that the cycle the format is in has more impact than TV advertising can outweigh. In the trends released so far I can't help but notice that ACs are down throughout the Northeast...WMJX, WLTW/NY, WBEB/Philly, WRCH/Hartford are all trending down (although all still have good numbers). I wonder if the gold these ACs are playing is getting a little too hard (or "upbeat" as listeners say). As AC get's brighter, they move towards the "middle" and thus lose part of their unique identity.

Perhaps that's true.... WJIB's listeners tell me almost equally, that they used to listen to WXKS and WMJX (and an occasional WPLM).....

Your argument is weak. Summer surveys have always reflected
lower listenerships across 25-54's because people get out of
their normal listening patterns and routines due to family vacations,
less time in the car since kids are out of school, shorter workdays,
more outdoor activities. Before you start making sweeping and
inaccurate statements like this, first understand how the
business works.

I suppose this is a possibility.

It is true that and appears the format is trending generally downward.

(Then X-mas Joe tried to interject some major attitude.)

Gee, can you be any more condescending?

Gallant offers up a few thoughts (nothing outrageous) and you slam him for "not understanding how the business works"....jeesh!
