It was 30 years ago today....

...that WSGN in Birmingham dropped their Top 40 format for adult standards. I was just thinking about the date a few days ago. I remember getting up the morning of February 24, 1984 and hearing big bands and standards on 610. It is the only time, to my knowledge, that Birmingham had three stations programming adult standards concurrently; the other two being WAPI 1070 and WTWG "Stardust 1220". WSGN'S new format, entitled "Real Music" was short-lived, lasting a mere 14 months before the station was sold to.Katz Broadcasting, who owned WZZK-FM.

If you're asking whether WAPI was doing AC when WSGN debuted the "Real Music" format, no. WAPI changed to adult standards in July, '83 so their "Hit Parade" format was already in place when WSGN's big band/standards format arrived on the scene the following year. However, WAPI *did* drop adult standards in January of '85, so 1070 *was* programming AC when WSGN signed off forever in April of that year. In my earlier post, I was just saying for a little less than a year's time (between Feb, '84 and Oct '84), Birmingham had three adult standards stations on the air. All three of those stations abandoned adult standards within a short period of time, however. WTWG was the first to go in Oct '84 when the station was sold to Good News Broadcasting and became Christian-formatted WAYE. WAPI followed suit a few months later, dropping adult standards for AC in January of '85, and WSGN became WZZK-AM in April of '85. Once WSGN became WZZK-AM, WAPI did a reversal, dropping the AC format that had been in place for only three months, and returned to adult standards, using the "Stardust" programming from Satellite Music Network.

And 30 years ago, those of us at WZZK kicked ass and took names. And led the ratings and made money.
