ITC "Triple Slot" issue

Hi Folks--
Have an ITC Delta "Triple Slot", which, when first plugged in (there's no "Power Switch" I'm aware of)--plays carts at HIGH-Speed (think "Chipmunks")--this goes on for for about 15 minutes or so, then it inexplicably "slows down" to "Regular Speed"--and continues to play without any issues--UNTIL it's UN-plugged & Re-plugged in. The "short term" solution is to lEAVE it plugged in , but I'm curious as to what the issue could be & what, if anything can be done to resolve it?

Well, a re-cap would certainly help. Some of these machines were designed to go into fast -forward (i.e.--double speed) when the cue tone detector saw a 100 hz. tone at the end of the cut on the cart. Allowing a fast re-cue to free up that slot for busy formats. Suspect what is happening is that there is a "burp" when the machine is turned on as leaky electrolytic capacitors charge up, which the cue amplifier interprets as a 100 hz. tone.

Any piece of equipment with some age on it--especially those '70~80's designs with lots of coupling caps, usually benefits from replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors. Many problems magically vanish.

Triple slot cart machines don't use the 150hz tone for tape FF. Single capstan for the 3 slots.

NLeibo, does the cart machine turns normal after about 15 minutes of cart playing or just for connecting it? The ITC Delta triple slot has a start motor upon cart insertion feature. The single slot ones don't.

I have a Delta triple slot with a record amplifier and 6 single Deltas. One of them has an excentrinc capstan that warbles the sound. I need to insert a tapeless cart (avoiding tape wear) and put it on FF for about 10 minutes. It becomes fine after that.

Its been awhile since I worked on those, but I think the motor speed is servo-controlled like the old Revox A77 capstan motors. Bad capacitors in the servo circuit will cause the motor speed to not be locked to the reference frequency. I've seen the Revox motors speed way up.

Should the issue be on the Motor Control PCB or on the Regulator board? The motor control pcb has a handfull of caps, the regulator board has 3. I have the manual/schematics. If you need scans, please ask, I'll give you them.

Obviously we've ruled-out the fast-cue option as the machine has a single captsan ;) But don't forget that should a similar problem occur in a single-deck machine, the fast-cue also mutes the audio output. This backs-up the posts that the servo circuit is definitely in need of some TLC!

They are great machines, though - just seem to run and run (although sometimes not at the right speed!)

Thanks for the response, guys. Re: pedro's question about "normalizing" after 15 minutes or so? EXACTLY!!! I just leave the damn plug in (wish it had a switch, but no such luck--though i don't know if that would help any)! Re; schematics offer--I'm not very "technical", so unless you can "translate" what the heck they mean, afraid it wouldn't help much (although it MIGHT make a nice wallpaper pattern for the Bathroom) ;D! Anything I--with my "limited" technical "expertise" can do about this issue, feel free to suggest!!

Thanks Again!

NLeibo... sorry to ask this:
Do your hear/see the capstan spinning without a cart inserted? I'm asking this because mine starts spinning just when a cart is inserted. The single players do it continuously. My triple slot player came from CBC (Canada) Don't know id they modified it to do it so.
I'm not technically skilled (far from that). Sometimes I have luck with what I do, sometimes don't...

If memory serves, all the ITCX cart machines - Premium and Delta - except the 99 series could optionally be wired for the capstan to run anytime the power was on, or only when a cart was inserted. The manual ought to tell you.

Replying to SFMPtGl--Yes, the capstan runs WITHOUT a cart--but then again so do my "single" ITC Deltas--so, i'm not sure what that "implies".

The problem , "littlejohn"is-- I DON'T HAVE the manual--as Stevie Wonder says --I'm "working blind"..
