Its 12:00AM, APRIL 2......

I take back what I said earlier. If I am the 7-10 guy, I am staying in Los Angeles. There is no way, and I repeat this, NO WAY this station will get any better. Even John McIntire sounded like he was lost in all of this. And if anyone thinks that CBS Radio will somehow magically get this ship sailing in the right direction, just take a look at their track record of recent follies. CBS= Cheap Bull Snot!

Note: Snot is a substitute for another bodily function.

It could go down as one of the worst format debut in Pittsburgh Radio history.

I will go one step further and say this is THE WORST format debut in Pittsburgh Radio History. Worse than K Garth, worse than anything. Two old ladies fighting UFC style would have sounded a hell of a lot better than this. Take John McIntire for example. His show mentioned Kidd Chris more than the entire frequency did all year. By the way to the twenty or so Pittsburghers who are Kidd Chris fans, good job!

The night guy Dave said the phones aren't working for him. This is pathetic. The show seems so unorganized.

Calling Upon Our Radio Board A Team Here.......lol

What went wrong today with 93.7 The Zone? Excluding the Paulsen deal, they were running a lot of PSAs in commercial slots, the phone lines were messing up, there were numerous problems with their board it seemed like or their operator and it sounded like everyone was totally unprepared. Man, it reminded me when I had my college radio show, atleast with that no one was listening! LOL. Any thoughts, I mean they had a long time to prepare, right?????????????

I tuned in at 10:30 AM, and stuck with it until 4:30 PM.

I can see where radio professionals wouldn't like "The Zone". It was spontaneous, interesting, and entertaining. It wasn't polished to within an inch of its life. It didn't have all life and spark smoothed out into bland vanilla "professionalism". Aside from Steigerwald, who couldn't be anything but boring no matter what he talked about, I liked most of what I heard.

In a world where every station on the air sounds like the people in the crowd of the Apple Computer "1984" ad looks, The Zone was a refreshing breath of fresh air. It did not sound like a standard, cookie-cutter "professional" station, and that's a good thing.

I doubt if it will last as long as Diamond Dave's show did.

I think Paulson will be the best host on the Zone. I hope Paulson got the green
light to debut his show today.

yea, it'll be interesting to see if he takes any calls, seeing 90% yesterday were all "you suck" calls....i bet thats something he's not used to at all...should be fun...unless he chickens out and just reads prepared bits about the pens and gambling....thats some funny stuff...?...

When Dennis Miller talked a whole segment and a half about Bob Prince, Myron Cope, and Mike Lange, he grabbed all of Pittsburgh.

If there's one thing the yinzers love, it's hearing about how great their icons are. Miller hit a home run with that...

Under 30 folks know who Mike Lange is. Most know who Myron Cope is.

Prince--ok, you got me there. But even those who never heard him have heard OF him from mom, dad, grandparents, etc.

Plus, the bobblehead.

Prince's legacy. This is a good topic.

No town has ever held onto a sportscaster longer than Pittsburgh has held on to Bob Prince.

It is AMAZING to me that Lanny Frattare can be at his job longer than Prince was, that Prince has been dead for 22 years, and yet Prince is so popular his old broadcasting partner Nellie King is sought out to be a spokesman for radio commercials.

Frattare might be hurt in that he has often referenced Prince as a mentor and in many ways tries to keep The Gunner's legacy alive.

The fact such an act would turn out to backstab Frattare is unfortunate, but perhaps a reality of the business.

As far as the younger crowd- many of my Generation X contemporaries only memories of the man were of bad hockey calls or less-than-par performances on KDKA-TV.

However, it should be noted in the early part of this decade there was a high school student who called Keystone Oaks games- the school he attended- online for MSA.

This announcer, who quite likely was born after Prince's death, taped a picture of Prince to the back of his chair as an inspiration and spoke of him with reverence.

That's one example, but quite telling.

Not to nit pick here, and I do have all the respect in the world for Bob Prince as a Pirates broadcaster, but I can name someone who held his job as sportscaster longer than Mr. Prince, and his name is Jack Buck, who started his broadcast career in 1954 and broadcast St. Louis Cardinals baseball games almost up until the time of his death in 2002. Everyone also knows his son Joe Buck, who took over for his dad broadcasting Cardinals games, and also on Fox Sports with baseball and football.

What I'm saying is hypothetically, if John Rooney and Dan McLaughlin are still announcing the Cardinals' games in 2022, that you won't hear a bunch of St. Louis fans saying "I hate them. They aren't Jack Buck!"

For that matter, how many people held the fact Buck wasn't Harry Caray against him in St. Louis?

Pratt, I understand you were saying something hypothetical. I started following baseball when we moved to St. Louis in 1969. Jack Buck was doing play by play on KMOX and was lucky enough to see Bob Gibson pitch a no-hitter while there. I also knew Harry Caray was the main play by play announcer until he was fired and moved to the Cubs, but that happened many years before I was even born. Since the Cardinals left KMOX I don't get to hear any games but you're probably right, I'd say something to the effect "these guys will never be as good as Jack Buck and Mike Shannon".

Sorry I took this off-topic.

Holding a job as a broadcaster is one thing. Being held on to by the fans is another. As Pratte4life said, "No town has ever held onto a sportscaster longer than Pittsburgh has held on to Bob Prince."

He's been off the air for several decades, and he's still the play-by-play guy that all others are judged by in this town.

"Frattare might be hurt in that he has often referenced Prince as a mentor and in many ways tries to keep The Gunner's legacy alive."

Or he might be hurt by the fact he's not very good or interesting and has given the audience no reason to let go of Prince.

I really like the station as well, I like McIntyre and I think it might take him awhile to fit into his new nitch (not talking primary politics) but I think he will do well. I just feel for him though getting hit with all those people who liked Kidd Chris calling in crank calls. But yeah, I agree with whomever said Paulsen will be the predominate voice of the station, like him or hate him, he is good.
