You may also want to consider the application filed by Flinn Broadcasting and granted by the FCC on 06/11/2012
which states:
"AS NOTED HEREIN, THE ASSIGNEE PROPOSES TO REBROADCAST THE SIGNAL OF WHBQ (AM), MEMPHIS, TN CONSISTENT WITH THE FCC'S RULES ADOPTED IN MB DOCKET NO. 07-172. AS MAY ALSO BE NOTED IN THE COMPREHENSIVE TECHNICAL EXHIBIT IN BPFT-20120314ACM, BOTH THE CURRENT AND PROPOSED USE OF THE W49BN TRANSLATOR AS A FILL-IN TRANSLATOR FOR WHBQ (AM) MEETS THE FCC'S TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS THEREFOR."
of course all of Flinn's AM's but 1 could be put on 97.7 by simply submitting new paperwork. WAVN is the only one that couldn't be put on 97.7 at the proposed location of Flinn's TV23 tower site in Bartlett.
Wait 48 hours and all of this will change probably just like the format on many of his stations.
Isn't there a date (in a couple of years) when all of the LPTV stations operating on channel 6 have to go digital? If so then why build up an audience on 87.7 only to have it "regulated" out of existence? If they have to go digital then the typical FM receiver will not work kinda like my old portable battery powered analog TV.
Yes. The drop-dead date for digital transition is September 1, 2015.
Some of the channel 6 LPTV pretending to be FM stations ("FrankenFMs," some call them) thought they would either be exempt from the change, or could cobble together some silly argument to convince the FCC to let them live on. The FCC seems uninterested in doing that.
Still, they have three years. "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may."
