It's always "hot" in this market!

I was going through the Altuna/State College area a few days ago and couldn't believe how many stations were called, "Hot." What's the deal with 103.1, (former Beaver) 100.1, WPRR, and 99.1 former "Power" all changing names? Wow!

All sister stations. Hot Hot Hot. There is also a station in Mount Union on 99.5, which simulcasts 100.1. For now.

"Hot's" and "Cool's" are also common names, they are everywhere. Same with "KISS's"

It is unusual to have so many stations with the same name in such a small geographic area, even with common ownership, especially with the amount of signal overlap between 99.1 and 100.1. Keymarket does it with Froggy in Western PA. Forever now has a Rocky in Johnstown as well as Altoona, and three Hots. I'm guessing QWK didn't become "Rocky" because it has a long history with those calls and that format.

No use in beating a dead horse here...but I will. In my opinion its just sad to see these station lose their idenities that they have had for such a long time.
It's understood that a station name must represent what is played on the air, but when I think of 101....I always think Revolution...when I hear of G101 it makes me think of 50 Cent.
Hot has the same Voice guy for all three stations. In a sense its like Satellite radio in this area casue you know you can always tune into the "Hot" station. Same with Rocky or Froggy.

It's good to see the idea worked, we changed the name to G101 so that you would think 50 cent instead of Disturbed, conisdering we play one and not the other now. I have to agree for all three station to be named Hot is kinda stupid, but they were using the same playlists for a while, are they still? If that is the case you just readjust your tuner and you still have Hot and the same song you were listening to.

I don't know why they didn't change QWK Rock over to a Rocky but the long history thing I would find hard to believe. Look at what is now Hot 99 in Johnstown. It used to be WGLU since it's days back in 1985 as a rock station then when it evolved over to Power 92 in 1987 they kept the same calls, as well as in 2000 when they flipped to Power 99.1. Ironically 100.1 in Altoona was also a Power at the time of the Hot name change, why didn't they choose to keep Power as the name for all three stations? I don't think heritage has anything to do with the way Forever works.

I have been surprised that Qwk did not morph into Rocky 98.7 myself. Honestly I'd guess that it was felt it would be a hard sell to move the frequency AND change the name and convince people it was still the same old station. By keeping the name QWK-Rock, the frequency flop was an easier sell...your favorite station just moved on the dial...blah blah blah. I am sure there was more to it than the name being heritage seeing how heritage calls like WPRR and WGLU were so quikly cast aside so the Hots could be born in the first place. I mean ask any Altoona'n what WPRR stands for and they could tell you TOP 40...same in J-Town with Power 99. If you think the name was retained because it meant something to the community, guess again.

I know I heard several songs with in 30 seconds of each other on 100.1 and 99.1, but I wasn't sure of 103.1.

So is that why you kept your "Heritage" nickname...(Watch Out For The) Hitman?

I for one know that 103 never shared logs with the other Hots. I've learned a lot of radio geeks like to blow smoke up a$$e$.
A.J., if the idea though was to make listners think of 50 Cent because of the term "G"101....does that mean your station will be fizzling out like his movie career?
That is serioulsy the stupidest reason to name a station like that...Guess in about a year here you will name Federline101 when Britney makes her comeback and Urban is no longer on the Top 40 charts?? (Feel free to add your own sarcastic station name here) You weren't really thinking further down the road when the name of the station was conceived were you?

What AJ was saying was that the name Revolution 101 made people think of ALTERNATIVE ROCK whereas G101 is more of a CHR type handle. Some people heard Revolutuon and said Oh yeah...its the station that is/WAS alternative right? In losing the handle and coming up with a new name, that image could be shed and G101 just seems more fitting (for Fiddy today, Greenday tomorrow, Rhianna the next day and whatever the current hot button of hit music is).

I assure you a LOT of thought of 1, 2...10 years down the road was put into the decision on a handle for the new brand we were creating with the re-focusing of the station and there is nothing wrong with it...B103 served 103.1 quite well for a long time, as did WPRR for Altoona, Power 99 (92) for Johnstown, etc.

Why is it that some here seem to automatically think 101 is stupid just because we have been the underdogs for so long? If you want to play the my-stick is bigger than your stick deal...we have 50,000 watts to play with...want to know where we'd like to stick em??? The people of State College and Altoona should feel lucky...they have a CHOICE between 2 good CHR's with very different styles and attitudes. They can have HOT if they want or G101 if they prefer. In many markets, you have to settle for whatever is on the dial at the time.

Elvis Duran has always been Elvis Duran. Hollywood John Harlow has used his handle since as long as I can remember. Aside for a brief period when a consultant told me to ditch it because the station was readjusting its image, I WAS/IS and always will be HITMAN to those I know. Many of my old friends simply say HEY HITMAN when they want to address me. Its my nickname...no different than whatever names you may call your own friends, etc. Take it for what its worth. Its just me.

I do like that song though! Seriously I answered you because I thought you were asking me a legitimate question as to why I use the name. I had been asked that before, so I just slipped into my "automatic answer mode". Sorry for any misunderstanding. Didn't mean to fly off the handle.

The "G" comes from WGMR. M101 or R101 don't have the same ring.
99.1 and 100.1 were using the same logs and might still be.

Rodger Dodger 10-4 good buddy Hitman!
Well now that this thread has been turned into the "Everyone picks on 101", lets get those posts rolling on in people! But first, a word from Bannerville.
Hi folks...Bannerville here to give you an informative but yet very highly opinionated thread! Don't worry I won't be long, but please..sit back...relax...And please for the love of the almighty Earth god known as Zachariah...Hitman, build a bridge over that river of tears, cause I'm not meaning to make ya cry!
Never once did I say that G101 wa stupid for being the underdoggies. I merely said that in my highly sought after opinion, G101 was a STUPID choice for call station identification. Truthfully...I like G101 over what is the Hotness of 103.
Truthfully Hitman, I could care a less of how big your stick is. (Insert lame joke about how huge our stick is and how you wish you had it, and where we want to stick it...blah blah blah. That joke is as old as Marconi. Please can we get some new material here??) You may have a 50,000 watt hairdryer for all I care, but if it sounds like poop, who cares. Krystal clear sound on Hot...Static sound for what is being processed thru a clothes dryer, G-G-G-G 101.
Settle for whats on the dial??!!? HAHAHA...yea I'll be talking this over with my iPod, internet radio, CD player and OTHER stations that I can reach outside the market. (VIVA VARIETY 977)
BTW, its quite interesting how Forever...er I mean...*cough cough*, I meant to say 2510 Associates, parked these so called Heritage call letters; WPRR & WBHV on two AM stations in Johnstown. If these didn't mean anything why would they bother saving them?? Mini Clear Channel strikes again!
Anyway folks, I'll be here all week, long live the King of New Orleans, and remember to tip your hooker. They have families too ya know!!
~B-ville out.

Sure, in lots of markets you have to SETTLE for whatever is on the dial at the time. In Philly, New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Miami....etc. Just one or two stations to choose from.

Wow! Now this one has a bona fide sense of humor!

LMAO!
