It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

If you can't tell if it's Christmas music, which is the case for a lot of the songs, what's the point? If you can hear it and there are Christmas-related lyrics, maybe. I don't respond to anything that's not traditional and familiar.

On the radio, there's one thing even worse than endless commercials and that's drug commercials listing side effects. That's the first thing I heard when I started the car. These were really disgusting side effects.

Even worse, I suppose, is hearing "Sarajevo" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra first thing after starting the car. Not where it starts and isn't so bad, but after it has transitioned to rock and is on the verge of making the final move to metal.

Well, it's that time of year again: the battle to have the Christmas number one single in the United Kingdom. That means having the number one single on Christmas Day according to the Official Charts. We don't have anything like it in the US, but in the UK, it is a huge honor.

Seeking a fifth consecutive Christmas number one is YouTuber LadBaby with yet another charity song parody in which he sings about sausage rolls. On the surface, "Food Aid" is a song parody of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas"; however, the song is about the tough economic times that many people in the UK are facing. The song features LadBaby, his wife Roxanne, and Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis on vocals, with some additional assistance. All proceeds from the downloads of "Food Aid" go toward the support of food banks throughout the UK.

In the battle for Christmas number one, LadBaby's "Food Aid" is competing against Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" (last week's number one), Wham!'s "Last Christmas" (this week's number one), and a few other songs.

This year's Christmas number one will be revealed on BBC Radio 1's The Official Chart next Friday (12/23), starting at 11:00 am ET.

I didn't know The Chipmunks did any other songs besides the one. And I've already forgotten what the station played this morning. I only heard a few seconds before I had to get out of the car because I had arrived.

LadBaby has done it! He has the fifth consecutive Christmas number one with "Food Aid." He now holds the record of five Christmas number ones, one more than the Beatles.

Below is a list of Christmas number ones that goes back to 1952. You are probably familiar with at least some of the songs from the 20th century.

Yes, they have at least one Christmas album, and probably more. In fact, they've got a ton of regular music too, not just the stuff from the movies.

I listened to the station where I heard them online after I got home. Songs get repeated over and over, so I heard it. It was "Jingle Bells".

Being that it's Christmas Eve, it's one of the more interesting times of the year for radio. Many country, classic hits, and other formats flip temporarily for the holiday. And so does one of my favorites - the Smooth Jazz Christmas on WSBZ the Seabreeze in Fort Walton Beach. Where it's going to be in the low 20s tonight, yikes! Absolutely love the variety - there's the usual instrumental artists, but you also hear Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and even Yolanda Adams...songs that major-market stations won't touch.

Closer to home, KOZI-FM Chelan WA airs a couple of radio plays - Miracle on 34th Street and (I think) A Christmas Carol. They are locally-produced. Then there's holiday music strongly leaning towards traditional/religious songs all night long and into Xmas.
KWIQ-FM Moses Lake suspends their country music for a couple hours to air the entire Handel's Messiah. It's very strange to hear operatic music on 100.5, but it's a yearly tradition up there.
Other stations go commercial-free...like KRWM in Seattle, they usually do 36 hours' worth.
And of course, there's Mannheim Steamroller on a 50KW news/talk AM near you. It's so nice to listen to KKOH or WGY and not hear Mark Levin for once!

EDIT - not on WJR this year, it used to be. But it will be on WLS, WSB, KRLD, and a few other big 50KWers...

It's not on a big AM down here, it's on 101.1 FM, in fact should have just started. That has become a tradition for me the last couple years. I probably won't listen quite as much this year as I did last, but I enjoy that program.

101.1 = KXL-FM Portland. Love Chip's stories, everything from the poinsettia to the Silent Night Christmas truce. SOOO much better than Mark Levin or Sean Hannity. And, it teaches us DX geeks which 50KWers have good music quality and which ones don't.
Usually KGO played Xmas music too. Localized, used to be Mannheim. Might not happen with the sports betting format.

Interestingly, both Seattle and Portland have that program on FM. I wonder what KOMO will be doing this year? For the last several years, they have gone into simulcast mode with 101.5, but 101.5 isn't doing Christmas this year.
I too love the stories, and I'm sure I'll hear some new ones I haven't before if I tune in at the right times this year. I especially love the one about Silent Night, my mom has actually visited the church where that song was first written.

There were 2 Chipmunks Christmas albums released in 1962 and 1963 with Ross Bagdasarian as Dave Seville; when Ross's son Ross Jr. and his wife Janice Karman re-started the franchise in 1979, there were additional Christmas albums. You can look up the rest.

Interestingly, Mannheim isn't anywhere in Seattle this year. In fact, the only areas of the state that can get that program this year are those served by KXL or KONP in Port Angeles. No Seattle, Spokane, Yakima, or Tri-Cities.

Is this related in any way to Steamroller?

In recent years WASL 100.1 Jack FM in Dyersburg, TN has had what they call A Jacked up Christmas. where they play Christmas music that fits the Jack format. The big problem is that it doesn't run long enough. It will run from about 5 or 6 PM Christmas Eve until no later than Noon Christmas day. I wish they would run it longer, especially with Christmas falling on a weekend like it is this year. Do any other Jack FM stations do something like this?
WASL did their usual thing again this year. It ran from 6 PM Christmas Eve until Noon today. I don't know why they can't run it longer, especially with Christmas being on Sunday this year.
