Y'all don't be dissing Magic for the Christmas music, now. It's not a moment too soon. Magic's ratings have been needin' some attention lately. It's time for their yearly ratings bump. ;D

Looks like there is one station Magic won't be able to beat, in quantity anyways. WILF Monroeville (88.9 FM) is playing wall-to-wall Christmas music, both secular and non-secular, and blasting a strong signal for those traveling I-65 from Georgiana to Atmore and beyond. I listened for an entire hour - no commercials (obviously), no chat between songs whatever. The only interruption was the simplest of legal IDs - "WILF, Monroeville".

How long have they been on? I'm in that neck of the woods and haven't really strayed from my usual car radio presets.
 
I saw the license to cover come down the pike just a week or so ago. I did a bandscan just today from around Foley in Baldwin County and didn't get a hint of anything on 88.9 except what sounded like a public radio outlet. I just assumed it was WMAU Bude or WFSU Tallahassee on skip.
 
Wonder why all these stations waste their time playing this horrible music so dreaded and hated by the majority of RI posters?

The idea of All-Christmas doesn't bother me, but the execution does.

Way too many covers, to the point where I'm really starting to resent standards like "The Christmas Song". (Note to the musical community--you're not topping the Nat King Cole version. Put that energy into a brand new song.)

That, and one more specific complaint--the AC stations too spineless to mix in songs by R&B/Soul artists. You've already busted up your regular format with dusty Andy Williams tunes,* would it really hurt your audiences sensibilities to hear "At Christmas Time" by Luther Vandross or "Christmas Just Ain't Christmas" by The O'Jays just because the 'Majic' urban AC has them? If 'Mix' is in your name, you need to 'mix it up'!

(*No offense to fans of Andy Williams, who's "Happy Holidays" song I grew to enjoy while stuck at work.)
 
The biggest complaint I've heard from family members so far regarding Christmas music is twofold and nearly unanimous across generations: first and foremost, they're sick of the Phil Spector Christmas songs, especially the Ronettes or whoever does Sleigh Ride, and second, no one plays the orchestral instrumental Christmas songs like the aforementioned Sleigh Ride by the Boston Pops.

The overarching theme of our Christmas on the radio discussion was that they start too soon and every station that does it, doesn't have enough variety in song choices.

Eh, whoever. I have a Boston Pops Christmas album so I just referenced that. I think it's a different interpretation but after listening online, I recognize the Anderson version as being the one traditionally played on radio when I was a kid.
