"It's impossible" apparently!

Hello - here's the dilemma:

We have been doing a free 1 hour a week (54 mins) show called Britsound that only plays British music (both new and classic stuff like The Beatles). It's a unique show that's on about 20 stations (12 of them internet) and lots of people seem to like it a lot. We now have the attention of many British artists who are serving us with the very best in new British rock. We are now into our 3rd year.

I've been told "it's a really great show", but it's impossible to get anyone's attention and get more affiliates without a major marketing campaign that would cost at least $150,000. Only then, "would we be taken seriously". The idea is that with that money we would buy ads in trade journals and create a "buzz".

Is this really true? Is there no way for the show to grow itself through old-fashioned hard-work and sheer ingenuity? Can talent ever substitute for a lack of money? We don't have that kind of money right now ;) Any thoughts appreciated. We are committed to doing this show.

I'm sure hard work and ingenuity can pay off but it will be hard. The question is are you giving what the market wants? How are you notifying the market? Did you go to the NAB Radio Show last year and do some networking etc.? Have you tried to get it on their HD2 channels etc. Gotta be creative! If you're thinking you need at least $150k, be more creative. Is one hour too short, would 2 or 3 for a weekend be more attractive a sell! You may need to broker some time on a station to say you have it on more etc....

One thought though, with stations being so tightly formatted, it may be that playing new stuff and oldies like the Beatles may be too wide etc.

Just some thoughts.
