It's Offical: K Rock Changing it's Name, Format and Call letters on Mon April 2

Per R & R,
It's now set in stone.
Monday April 2, K Rock becomes talker 93.7 The Zone with the call letters of WTZN. Here's the lineup

6-9 O & A
9-10am undecided
10-1pm Dennis Miller
1-4pm John McIntire
4-7pm Scott Paulson
7-12 unknown
12-6am unknown

The weekend lineup is not certain at this time.
What are your thoughts on this lineup so far?

So far, with only three names, it's a mostly local line-up. Even though Dennis Milleris syndicated from out of town, he's as much a yinzer as the other two, maybe even more than they are.

It's just too bad they're throwing away morning drive with Opie & Anthony. I can't believe that there aren't two people working in Pittsburgh radio who couldn't do a good live and local morning show. Or maybe two people who aren't currently working in Pittsburgh radio who should be.

I remember hearing O&A talking about having a one hour "worst of" airing in markets. This would be a good time to debut that. I'm surprised Dennis Miller will be a midday show. I thought it was going to be a 10pm-1am. I would be surprised if they dropped Love Line. 11pm-1am would be covered or whenever they wanted to air it.

In relation to talk radio here in the burg, the Paulsen / McIntyre Afternoon Slot would be good competition to Hannity on 1047, Hoerth on 1360, and the WORD Afternoon show. But hey, at least Kidd Crap is gone!!!!

Amen to that! A little too late though.

You should read the Philadelphia post regarding the spin that Kidd Chris and his people put on being canned from Pittsburgh. What a load of crap! Typical Radio Diva behavior.

Re: It's Offical: K Rock Changing it's Name, Format and Call letters on Mon Apri

Getting rid of Chris Kidd/Kidd Chris was the best thing to happen to Pittsburgh airwaves. I tried several times to listen/like the guy and just couldn't stomach the show. As much as I like Scott Paulsen and even yinzer Dennis Miller, I can't see this as a ratings success. Nobody is going to de-throne Sean Hannity locally in the 3-7 time slot.

One last thing I've wanted to say about K-Rock in Pittsburgh. I was actually one of the few people that listened to and liked K-Rock. I wasn't into the Hair Ball or Kid Chris/Chris Kid or LoveLine, but when it came to music, I thought the selection was good. Most of the notes I've read on Radio-Info seemed to suggest K-Rock was targeting WDVE. In my humble opinion, their format was more of an active rock format and resembled more 105.9 The X with the music selection. When I think of WDVE, I think of 90% classic rock regurgitated for us to listen to. When I listened to K-Rock, I heard 90% new rock/alternative and 10% classic rock. Just my observations.

I liked the music selection of K Rock but I also liked the local on-air personalities. Bob Orilee, Nick Zopolis, Megan Slater, Kravin a.k.a. Ron Man, and Dave Cook seemed more outgoing and more like real people than the other stations in Pittsburgh.

Don't forget Jerry Conrad. I forget what name he used.

Also, good riddance to Kid Chris. Go back to college radio, chump! K-Rock might have stood a chance with a good PM driver with music. and he pretty much killed it for them.

In my humble opinion, I would have liked to see Scott Paulson on morning drive for the new zone. He did a great job on DVE, especially when he had the morning show with Krenn.

I read what Chris Kidd (or is it Kidd Chris?) was supposedly saying on the air on the Philadelphia board.

All I can say is theorizing a Philadelphia talk show would work on a Pittsburgh music station is the sort of decision that only a Suit from out of town could possibly make.

Rocker- This board actually had a lot of K-Rock fans.

In fact, K-Rock made me a Pauline Kael figure because "I don't know how it could have failed- everyone I know listened to it!"

But I think with so much of the ad budget devoted to promoting David Lee Roth and the fact during drive time they rarely played any music killed it.

I really think there's room for a third rocker in Pittsburgh. My own taste would be to have a more 80s intensive format- because that's what we don't currently have.

And to tell you the truth- I think eventually that will happen.

Re: It's Offical: K Rock Changing it's Name, Format and Call letters on Mon Apri

I wouldn't be surprised if that big empy 7pm-12mid. slot gets filled by the popular Tom Leykis show. Leykis' highly-rated "relationship"/comedy show aimed at young men currently airs on a delay from LA in the evenings on WURP, 1550 The Edge. Learned elsewhere that 1550's switching formats.

Tom had this announcment today: "Monday April 2 the Tom Leykis Show is leaving Westwood One and is going to CBS Radio and will broadcast from a different studio. It is a 5 year multimillion dollar contract. The show will still be carried by the same stations...".

This would be good - the current lineup appears lightweight, don't know about Miller yet. Yinzer-radio, indeed!

Re: It's Offical: K Rock Changing it's Name, Format and Call letters on Mon Apri

I think someone mentioned a different morning show than O&A. I had an amusing thought about this at work tonight and came up with the "Wake Up With Whoppie" show. Then I realized I was under a lot of stress and needed more coffee. ;D

Here's how I see it, Realist. With the state of radio being in the fix it's in, I would demand a VERY SWEET contract deal if I were an established talent in a major market. I don't think a lot of group owners are willing to do that these days. Now that you have two huge companies controlling most of Pittsburgh radio, "defecting" isn't as easy as it once was. You go from one company to another, then you get blown out by your new employer for whatever reason, where do you go?

That's not a big deal to someone who lives in an unfurnished apartment with no wife or kids, but for established talents here who are married with families and have homes, it is.

I would say maybe go with a Pittsburgh celebrity who's not a radio person in the traditional sense. Maybe one of the TV people here that's "on the beach" right now. Scott Baker, perhaps? Maybe get Don Cannon out of the field and into the studio?

How about former Allegheny County Chief Executive Jim Roddey?

I agree. However, I don't think the best choice would be an "established" talent. I'd be thinking more along the lines you suggested:

I'd favor getting someone who knows radio but never achieved much "star" status teamed with someone like Billy Elmer or some other local comedian who might be willing to switch from stand-up in clubs to being part of a morning team.

I seem to recall that Scott Paulsen was not that "established" of a name when he was teamed with a former stand-up comic on a local morning show.

Lets hope "The Man Station" works for 93.7. Its been an absolute waste of a great frequency since the change to K-Rock. To think therir was a day with a bunch of suits sitting around to made the decision to blow up B-94. I'm sure they've all been fired for this and other mistakes they made.

The Zone has a good line up, and is a decent idea. Lets hope that it doesn't fall in line with the stupidiest format flips in Pittsburgh radio history. I fondly remember K-Bear, The Rebel and indeed K-Rock.

Since they're CBS, I'm surprised they're not adopting the Free FM name.

From what I heard they almost did. Right now CBS Radio wants to try and phase out all of the Free FM branding. It's unknown if they are going to flip some of those stations formats though.

What do you mean by phasing out the Free FM branding? Are they going to stop changing stations over to "Free FM" of revert stations already "Free"d? The taking away of a station's identity for the dopey Free FM name was moronic. Yous are lucky that k-rock is getting into the game late. But then again, we haven't see everything "The Zone" has to offer yet. I'm listening to the stream, so ive heard the promos. Likening the station to the "boys only treehouse" is just screaming ratings gold to me. Paulson will regret jumping ship.
