It's official: Astral to buy Standard radio

What Standard stations do you think will be affected by the change??

While it may be too early to tell which stations will be affected and how,
all stations will be affected in the promotions department for sure.

For example, do you think Mix 999 is going to have Cineplex movie promotions anymore?
Very doubtful.
The last thing the new owner would want to do is encourage people to go out to a movie when they own the Movie network.

With CHUM being acquired by CTVglobemedia, it is possible for Astral to acquire A-Channel (CFPL, CKVR, CHRO, CKNX, CHWI, CIVI) in order to get Standard's former radio stations in Montreal (classic rock CHOM, news/talk CJAD, hot AC/CHR CJFM) and Hamilton (AC CKLH, oldies CKOC & classic country CHAM). CHUM will have The Team 990 back with CHOM, alongside CJAD & CJFM. Astral may also get CHUM's stations in Kitchener (oldies CKKW & hot AC CFCA).

Hmm, very interesting. We've got 3 Standard-owned station here in Montreal (CJAD 800, CJFM 95.9, and CHOM 97.7). I wonder whether or not these stations will be switching formats. CHOM is a steady classic rocker whose ratings are quite good, while CJFM (Mix 96) is a Top 40 station that plays crappy pop music. CJAD brands itself as Montreal's News Talk Leader, which describes their current format perfectly. Something tells me that a format change for either of these 3 stations might not happen, but you never know...

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Mix Montreal and Toronto both start modeling after the Energie french concept that Astral currently owns, but in english instead of french...

Not sure... With Astral's head office in Montreal, and knowing the strong performance of MIX 96, would they want to mess with a winner??

They have the right to redefine what a "winner" is though.
Do they want 18-24? 25-39? Men? Women? (We know it's women...I'm just adding to the example)
What if they are a winner in one area but would prefer to have the other...that's what seems to be going on in Toronto...(at 999fm)

Mix 96 would fit well with CHUM instead of Astral, because CHUM only owns The Team 990. CHUM would probably repurchase classic rocker CHOM, along with news-talker CJAD & hot AC/CHR CJFM, and move The Team 990 to the Dufort Av. building. Astral will only own 2 French stations (CKMF & CITE) if Astral/Standard sells CHOM, CJAD & CJFM.

If Astral is willing to sell to CHUM GROUP CTV inc, then I guess it fits the whole “We've said all along that we want to continue to grow" point they're trying to make...

As of today (Monday October 29), the old Standard stations now ID as Astral stations, at least in the case of BX93 in London. I assume everyone else flipped today.
