It's official: Kent Dana is leaving Channel 5

Well, Dhett, I'm younger than you, so my recollection of those folks is pretty hazy, but my parents said the same thing you did! ;)

Unfortunately for KPNX, my folks now feel that the station has gone completely downhill and is nowhere near how good it used to be. And I doubt they're the only 2 people in the Valley who feel that way.

Too bad.

As a recent transplant to the Valley, KPNX has gone WAY down in the past 5 years. I don't understand the Kevin Hunt and Jimmy Q hirings (just plain strange). In addition, they've lost almost all of their veteran reporters and replaced them with backpack journalists.

OK......For all the negative stuff about 12News. Look at the ratings for all newscast in valley from 3,5,10,12, and 15. Channel 12 has done way better in ratings compared to any newscast in valley. For me 12News has the best newscast in valley ,and anchor news people like Marc,Lin Sue ,and Fay. I know James (weather guy ) is new but give him credit he had big shoes to replace after Bill Kelly left the station. For Kevin Hunt it took me a while to get to know his sports segments . But he really can make you laugh at his sports segments. I Have taken a look at other stations for news ,and there just to boring.

Oooo - burn! :) I'd smack you with my cane, but my bursitis won't allow me to raise my arms high enough to get....uh, what were we talking about again?

Don't get me wrong - Mark Curtis did a very credible job replacing Bill Denney as the #1 sports guy - IIRC, Curtis was actually hired following the tragic and untimely death of Steve Pascente. Sean McLaughlin, the weekend guy when Bill Austin was doing weather, actually ended up being better than Austin IMHO. Whereas Austin came across as some comedian who just happened to know something about weather and could deliver an entertaining segment, McLaughlin struck me as someone knowledgeable about weather who was able to learn how to deliver an entertaining segment.

Not that Bill Austin was the second coming of Dewey Hopper or anything.

I'd second that. All of the stations have gone down hill (okay maybe one or two never had a hill ;D) but 12 is still the leader among the English language stations. They've stayed on top even though their network has sucked big time for the past 5 years or more.

Ya gotta hand it to them for that!

Even with my observation that 12 News has gone way down hill in the past 5 years, they still generally put on the best newscasts in the Valley. I must say, though, that ABC 15 is improving in the mornings -- with their "less chit chat, more news" format

I'm pretty sure Steve Pascente was killed in an accident while on location in D.C.
:(

You are correct. Don't know just who I was thinking of.
