It's Official - Q-105 is Back!!

Finally after 3 years of Oldies 104.7, Charlie Ochs announced the switch back to Q-105 during Mason's first day back at about 6:40 this morning. I only got to hear one new jingle but it is much better than what they had.

Must mean they are not going ot HI-JACK that frequency for some jukebox format...

Always thought of using those legendary calls was really a no-brainer. Oldies 104.7 is hard to say and remember. Plus, has no charisma. Would WFLA throw away those famous calls to be "Talk 970"?

Very interesting. Rich Marino and myself have been putting together a tribute website at Q105TampaBay.com. We are currently designing pages and should have it up by the end of the month. We will launch with approx 60 audio cuts but we KNOW there is MUCH MUCH more. If anyone has ANYTHING Q105 related from years past, please e-mail me at [email protected] or e-mail Rich at [email protected] and let us know so we can get it on the site.
______________

I think they felt they needed to distance themselves from the Q105 country days. I think they were wrong, but it's just my guess as to why they crawled bak to the calls instead of embracing them from day 1.
______________

Not only are they finally Q-105 again (it's about time!)... but listen for less and less from the 60's. Their website is being re-worked but you get idea but looking at the top of the following page...
http://www.oldies1047.com/jocks.html

So far today I've heard lots of the old jingles from the 80's. Most of which were part of those mp3 files that were posted right here a few months ago. Sounds like they'll continue to target The Eagle and further erode The Point.

Thanks for the update, radiofan13, for those of us who are no longer in the market and can't hear the Q. Interesting how on the site it NOW says "Greatest Hits of the '70s & '80s" But according to the Yes.com site, musically there haven't been any changes yet.

By chance did anyone roll tape on Mason's return this morning?

I'm rolling "tape" as I type. They just replayed the unveiling of the Q105 banner in the studio and telling Mason that they are now Q105. Email me and I'll send you a copy. Go to tampabayradiohistory.com and click email me. Dont want to give email on the board because of spam.

I wondered aloud if the unveiling of "Q-105" was to happen around the 4th of July, or sooner, but was delayed because of Mason's wreck.

My second ponderance is... who, if anyone, will add in more of the 60's music since Q is dropping alot of those classics. Or will Cox blow up a low rated station and plug in an "Oldies" jukebox. A 60's format without jocks make NO sense.

Does anyone remember the terrible all-Dick Clark Oldies format on 97.1?

(By the way, it is great to hear a station playing good jingles again!)

Yeah, I was just going to mention that. Cox has been there, done that already.

And of course there are "True Oldies" on WJQB. Anyone listening over there on 106.3? Anyone.. anyone? Hello?... is this thing on? :)

Brian did you get my email? I sent it and I received an error message through McAfee that the user was invalid but it appeared sent anyway in Outlook. Very tempermental virus scanner I have. It should scan for viruses and not worry about who I send email to. Thats another rant another day.

This is a GREAT decision Infinity made in Tampa. They didn't
JACK this station up like their other oldies stations. They
brought back a heritage name, Q105. Q105 is playing the music
that made them famous. It's still oldies, but "newer" oldies
and a younger audience. Everyone is happy.

If COX does create an Oldies station, it will be dull and lifeless. Don't expect it cause COX reacts to nothing. I still would expect Clear Channel to somehow increase WSRZ's coverage to Tampa Bay before COX does anything about anything.

I like the music on 106.3. In fact I do listen. I might listen more if it was live and could be received south of Clearwater.

Q105 is back with the legendary call letters. Good news, but the hybrid oldies format has not worked many places with any degree of ratings success. The era's just do not mix well. If Ochs dumps the 60's, then is it an 80's station? Are they going to play disco from the 70's? Where is the new audience coming from? Is that going to be a desirable demo for advertisers? It's all about the money with Hollander and Infinity. They don't give a damn about heritage stations or legendary air talent. Take a look at WCBS-FM in New York. They walked away from a boatload of money to change formats. Time will tell.

Are the jingles produced by JAM, like Q105's were during the 80s? Can someone post some samples?

Q-105 is Back

AND they are proof that 60s and 70s hits CAN WORK. They've done a nice job and the Q105 deal, while a little late IMHO, was done perfectly with Mason's return.

A very good job of giving a station a new coat of paint without tearing the whole building down.

Re: Q105 is back...Hooray!

I haven't really listened enough to tell for sure, but I really don't think the music has changed that much, so add that, along with calling it Q-105 again, plus the jingles, and the station has a whole different feel now... I kinda like it, and time will tell. It's been a loooong time, and my mind is a bit foggy these days, but are these 'new' jingles really from an old package from back in the day? If they are, they still sound good.

WRBQ-FM was ahead of the curve of many "oldies" stations by playing 70s rock hits in with the 60s music, even before the frequency switch from 92.5 (in its U92 days). By not alienating the future of the 25-54 core, the station has been able to thrive and succeed long-term.

As ridiculous as it can be to round up a .7 (such as 104.7) to the next number in the digital age, the legacy of the Q105 name trumps that, in my opinion. More than three years removed from the Q105 country format, I think that ample time was needed and was given (and I respectfully dissent from those who think the name change should've happened quicker). Regardless, the change is here now, and so long as Q105 is careful not to do too many of the 80s bumpers segued into slow songs (like I heard yesterday going into an Elton John slower piano intro), they should do just fine.
______________
