It's Official, "Radio Disney" Is Ending on WQEW This Fall

Why would anyone think they would kill it off before the end of the week?
Chances are it goes off at Midnight Tonight. Finish out the work week before nuking it.
Usually ads are sold that way anyway.

Thanks anyway, as of this morning, they're still running Radio Disney on 1560 AM as of this morning. You'll have almost 16 hours left to go until it signs off at midnight tonight. I will be recording the last day of Radio Disney tonight. I'll keep you posted ASAP.

There've got to be Disney radio insiders looking at all these threads on this board right now and laughing at us radio geeks trying to guess what they're up to.

The Detroit affiliate has a live promotion scheduled for this Sunday...so they may be waiting until Sunday night 11:59 to take the network dark (except of course KDIS in LA)......Some folks were seen around the Houston tower site this morning..possible buyers look at it??? Noone knows yet...

According to Fybush that Radio Disney will remain on the air until it's going to be sold. That would be a wise decision. The station will end by possibly soon by this Sunday night or whatever the day will sign-off. We'll see what happens.

With all the brouhaha about WQEW, I might suggest that the new owner be someone who will utilize either a non-commercial operation or a hybrid revenue model (in which the station survives on donations as well as advertisement) for revenue. As far as a format, I'd suggest oldies or standards as top considerations. Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids Michigan owns and operates two such stations (simulcast), WGVU 1480 and WGVS 850 out of Kentwood/Grand Rapids and Muskegon respectively. They've been at it since 2009 and seem to be doing well.

As far as a standards format, WAVO (1150) just outside of Charlotte NC is utilizing a hybrid revenue model for income. They JUST started utilizing such a model when they discovered advertisement revenue wasn't sufficient to keep the format going, so they started asking for donations. So far, they've been able to make ends meet.

Probably the most notable non-commercial standards are owned and operated by Bob Bittner in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Bath and Gardiner/Augusta ME.

I hear that the net will run till it's sold.

Is this to say that they only want to sell the Radio Disney stations as a network (a complete set, take it or leave it?), rather than the individual stations, which should be easier to sell (e.g., in Detroit, there are a few existing stations with poor coverage, who may want WFDF's facility for an upgrade to become competitive, whereas in Chicago, they have more than one little station, and the sum does not even cover the whole market)

Running the stations until they are sold, or not, was not Disney's choice. It is pretty difficult to turn a bunch of stations off when you own a number of TV stations and a TV network. Some will be sold others will be sold for the property the abandonment of this large a group of stations will have an impact on the prices of all AM stations in the future.

Aside from the irrelevant political distraction you introduced, I am unable to visualize how working for an AM station that might play music for a demographic no advertiser wants would look "good" on antibody's résumé.

Things that look good on a résumé include working for successful stations in meaningful positions over at least a few years. An AM music format will not be sustainable for that length of time, and can not possibly be recognized in the industry as "successful".

And there is no way that any owner can pay $15 an hour in NYC today.

Find a place in NJ that has cheap(er) rent and feed it to the transmitter.

I've just read the news that WQEW at 1560 is to be sold to Family Radio. That means the station will be flipping to oldies anytime soon, let WMCA do it, and I do hope 570 will be thinking about flipping to oldies and bring back the moniker known as the "Good Guys" like the way Harry Harrison, Joe O'Brien, Ed Baer, Gary Stevens, B Mitchell Reed, Jack Spector and a bunch more who remember WMCA in the past. If WQEW goes to Family Radio, WMCA will decided to bring oldies back to NYC or not. The choice is yours.

Family Radio is just barely plugging along with what little programming they have left. They did purchase one AM station in Philly after the late Harold Camping's disastrous end-of-the-world ad campain. If they do manage to acquire WQEW, it won't affect WMCA in the least. They still have all the heavy hitters in Christian Talk Radio that Family Radio burned bridges with years ago.

One of the funniest posts I've read in a while. Thanks for the laugh!!!!!

Is Disney having trouble sellling 1560 & other radio disney stations?
(As if Disney needs the $$$.)

Bumping the thread for an FYI: Disney is selling KMIC Houston to DAIJ Media, which specializes in Spanish language religion. This is the first sale of the remaining Radio Disney stations, so the wheels are starting to move.

Does anyone know what year KMIC (the former KYOK) was sold to Disney? That sale was for $6 million. The current sale price is $3.2 million, so that is certainly a huge loss.
