It's official--RRK is Jacked(R) OFF!

...or "Bobbed" off, to be exact.

I heard AC/DC at 1:00 a.m. on November 1, which was expected, followed by that "Hey Baby Hey Baby Hey" stuff by Gwen Stefani or some such artist.

Could this be what I think it is?

Yep, it's Bob(R)!

Was this a pre-emptive thing, in case WRKZ was thinking of going Jack in January? I thought 'RRK declined Jack last year.

What's next for WRKZ after David Lee Roth bombs? I reckon "FREE-FM" is out, as it would only hurt KDKA.

I've never worked in radio, but I've lurked here for a couple of years. I briefly considered pursuing a career in radio, but everything I've read makes me realize I made the right decision not to.

Anyway, have fun.

It's true, Bob FM debuted at midnight, according to the press release I was sent.

Pittsburgh, PA, November 1, 2005 12:01 am: Steel City Media is proud to announce the birth of BOB. Radio historians will note that BOB FM was born in Pittsburgh on Halloween night after a Steeler’s Monday night football win! Proud pappa, PD John Robertson said, “My staff and I are looking forward to nurturing BOB and achieving great things.” First songs played on consultant Joel Folger’s, “WE PLAY ANYTHING” BOB FM Pittsburgh:

1. Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London
2. Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
3. Ton Loc – Wild Thing
4. Tomas Dolby – She Blinded Me With Science
5. Aerosmith – Sweet Emotion
6. Roy Orbison – Oh Pretty Woman

This will be interesting. They may seem to think it would hurt WDVE but I am more inclined to think it will effect 3WS and Star more than anything.

Yes I'm very curious to see what will happen now to 93.7 if David Lee Roth flops (and he probably will). Maybe they will move KDKA to FM? That would be interesting. Or perhaps they flip to CHR/Rhythmic or Pop? Thoughts?

I highly doubt that KDKA will "move" to FM. AM is not dead in Pittsburgh like it is in other cities. And I don't think KDKA would be allowed to simulcast 24/7 on FM (I think this dates back to the late 1960s when the FCC forced stations to provide original programming on FM at least 12 hours a day).

I like K-Rock's mix of music, but it seems that others don't like it, or are just used to the stations they've "always" listened to (WDVE, WXDX, etc.) and aren't looking for anything new.

And yes, DLR will drop a huge bomb in 3 to 6 months. I can't see him doing a good morning radio. Reminds me of when Cheap Channel syndicated Dee Snider (of "Twisted Sister" fame) and they let him go like a hot potato.

Thoughts?

Point by point, if I may ...

I believe all that is correct, but an AM simulcast on FM is not unusual even in this day even in a market as large as Pittsburgh with a station as notable as KDKA. WBT in Charlotte simulcasts on an FM to reach a null even in its 50,000-watt signal. I think WTOP in Washington, D.C., also was using an FM (I do not know if that is still the case).

K-Rock sometimes surprises when I scan. I also get some K-Rock indoctrination from my nephew when driving with him. To be honest, I never did see what made it apropos to put Stern in the morning with a old-fashioned hard rock format the rest of the day, in New York or in Pittsburgh.

I vaguely remember the Snider fiasco. Cheap Channel does seem appropriate, doesn't it, for a title, just like Chicken Noodle News, for instance. As for David Lee Roth, I'd have to agree, he's good for that horrible video that started off with "Dave TV" and went on to give us a pretty good send-up of the television industry, but 3-4 hours a day 5 days a week? Good luck, Mr. Roth, you will need it.

The rule commanding separate programming on AM/FM combos is antiquated, and was effectively repealed years ago once the AM band started mooching off the FMs. (e.g., the first example I can think of--besides WBT noted below--was WMJI-FM 105.7 in Cleveland which simulcasted on co-owned WMJI 1260 in 1987).

So, if this came to pass, it would be an AM simulcast of KDKA-FM (or whatever).

RRK has just handed DVE the keys to the entire classic rock audience, which they were able to fragment slightly as long as they were Channel 97. K-Rock is a non-issue, as they have no musical position that resonates with the audience, plus they're beaten by DVE and The X in their target demos (and that's WITH Stern), so advertisers are jumping ship. DLR will fail, and DVE has just been handed even more of the rock audience.

Re: Point-by-point ...

Are there any cities that currently have both Jack (Infinity) and Bob stations? I can't imagine Infinity bringing Jack to Pgh now that Bob has been born. :)

As much as Infinity loves JACK, they do not put it on in any market where Variety Hits already exists. The only exception is Chicago where a suburban VH station, NINE-FM, pre-existed.

You may end up being surprised. In Los Angeles, KLOS was celebrating the day their Classic Rock rival KCBS-F went JACK. They expected a big boost. Instead, KLOS has been stable while JACK is currently #1 25-54 in LA.

I'm in Las Vegas, and the JACK here has caused all the Classic Rock type stations to take big hits. Even the mainstream rocker KOMP has been hurt badly by JACK. I'm not sure if it's just temporary, but in the short term Variety Hits can cause male leaning stations to go down not up.

Re: Point-by-point ...

If David Lee Roth flops, will he be replaced by Sammy Hagar (who will, if history repeats, make us wish we had DLR back)?

If so, they can't use the WBZZ calls anymore, as Infinity moved them to an AM talk station in Tampa, FL.

Actually I think the rule now is that if Infinity wants to, they can use the calls on an AM and an FM, so moving them to 1010 in Tampa was primarily for the purpose of parking them.<P ID="signature">______________

That's the very joke that was told on the Howard Stern excerpt that's being aired on 93.7 to promote the January 3rd launching of DLR's show.

Does anyone else think that much of the DVE staff was like "Thank GOD, now we can go straight classic rock and quit playing that Staind crap"?

Re: Point-by-point ...

WTOP uses a 50,000 watt FM at 107.7 30 west of DC in Warrenton Va. to fill the void created by a null to the west on their main signal on 1500 AM , they also have an LPFM at 104.3 downtown, and they simulcast on WXTR at 820 AM in Frederick MD

Which is what Keymarket has done in this region, getting WYJK for Connellsville on AM and Bellaire on FM. On AM it's still an oldies simulcast, on FM it's JACK FM on the former WOMP.

WTOP's Signals and FM Talk Simulcasts

All correct, except that the 104.3 translator (W282BA) is not downtown, but in far suburban Leesburg VA.

And yes, WTOP does a legal ID for all FOUR stations every hour, including the translator!

Another recent example of an FM news/talk simulcast (which has probably been mentioned in other messages I haven't read yet) is KSL/Salt Lake City.

I wonder if KDKA ever did this...if part of the motivation would be to get "FM signal parity" with WPGB.
