It's Official: WKDN Sold - To Merlin Media

Re: WKDN Sold

Well, WKDN doesn't show up in the ratings now, will they make a blip as FM News?

I think WURD and WHAT will pull better ratings!

If I were CBS, I would just wait this out. If "FM News" in NY and Chicago are any indication, they don't have much to worry about.

No need to blow up another FM for this one. Nothing to see here folks, move right along.

In the positive, at least Merlin is creating jobs for people.

How soon before Family Radio sells off 94.7 in NYC??

Despite the early difficulties in NY and Chicago, I think Randy is on the right track.

Real or otherwise, it creates the appearance that this is how KYW regards Philadelphia: a stubborn, provincial backwater that will stick to 1060 because that's all it knows.

It leaves CBS with no options for an FM news station. That was clearly less important in Philadelphia than in Chicago, San Francisco, or Washington.

Way to go.

wow maybe some people on fm will be able to say their names correctly and towns and that goes for a small number of the major competitor fm intends to compete with.

Perhaps if Merlin combines all the ratings in New York, Chicago & now Philly, they'll be able to put together a 1 share!!!

Well Its time for CBS to consider KYW-FM All News and in Boston to put WBZ News on FM too just like what they did in SFO, DC, and Chicago. But for SFO KCBS is in the top 3 in the market but that will change once Cumulus put KGO All News 810 on FM. KABC as All news is still questionable at the moment.

Wonder what happens to all the various WKDN translators in Pa. & NJ? Are they sold or do they pick up Family Radio from WFME or another affiliate?

I knew that CBS had some business deal with Camping.

who knows if Merlin is even going to go all news with 106.9 they may have something else in mind like ac or country or alternitive
so dont hit that panic botton just yet

May I ask a question as a sort of low man on the totem pole in the industry? Apart from a transmitter, does KDN have any sort of physical property or assets or anything in Camden at all? Like a building or anything? I mean, it's been Family Radio since what, the '60s or '70s? Does the Camping contingent just relay it here somehow or is there an actual soundboard potted up somewhere here? I'm just curious, this is the Philly market FM station I know the least about ... and I grew up here.

WKDN has an EAS box, since I've heard local EAS alerts on 106.9.

Perhaps 106.9 should just advertise that the world is ending on December 21, 2012. It'll give them better ratings than FM News.

If Camping was smart, he'd get out of the radio biz altogether. I'm sure he's already lost 95% of his audience this year. He's ready to kick the bucket any minute himself. And those stations are going to be sold after he's gone regardless. The name "Family Radio" is synonymous with "charlatan" now. So there's no "brand" rescue possible and any other that stems from the Oakland compound with the same affiliates will likely be viewed with suspicion.

Their New York signal, WFME has a grandfathered power level, don't they?

Good luck to 106.9....

I haven't looked at the compiled lists on the net, but based on HAAT (571') and power (31kW), it seems to be average power for a class B FM. However, they have another 250 feet of elevation between them and NYC so the signal to the east has to be impressive. However, unless you're in a car, getting the signal in most of Manhattan is a no-go because of the tall buildings and the plethora of signals on Empire. A booster would recify that for a potential buyer, though.

I too am curious how the technical aspects of these Family Radio stations are. 107.9 in Washington seemed to have a gimpy signal in parts and iffy processing, several people in Philly said WKDN is basically using 1970's vintage equipment, and based on the look of the WFME studios in NJ, I'm quite sure they're pretty bad off.

Inquiring minds want to know...

I don't know about that, or that, or that... The link in the original post specifically said Merlin would be putting an all-news format on 106.9.

WKDN has office space (probably a studio also) upstairs in an old row house type business building in Camden. Passed it one time while lost in Camden. (Thanks Map Quest!) Wouldn't go there in full body armour.

Last time I was in the WKDN transmitter building (about 8 years ago) they were running an AEL transmitter, so that should tell you something.

The transmitter site is actually owned by Beasley, licensee of co-located AM station WTMR. I wouldn't be surprised if the new owners try to move it to Roxborough or Center City. With a directional antenna, it appears this would be possible -- and the antenna would gain significant HAAT which isn't possible at the present location due to close proximity to the eastern approach to PHL.

As for the WKDN translators -- if they transmit in the commercial portion of the band, they would be prohibited from taking a direct satellite feed from a distant Family Stations facility. Some, such as W249AA (the 97.7 between Lebanon and Lancaster), are licensed to outside owners. W249AA took a direct off-air feed from Camden (quite a filtering challenge due to the nearby 106.7 in Hershey/Elizabethtown) but has been off the air in recent months.

Anyone have information on where to send T&R (or modern equivalent, shows how long I've been on the beach) to Merlin?

I ask because the only website I can find almost looks like a parody site: http://merlinmediallc.com

Either it's a parody site, or these are owners after my own heart.
