OK KYW should consider putting their news on FM or HD-2 or HD-3 on their other CBS O&O radio stations in Philly.

Isn't it already WIP-FM HD2?

Why yes, yes it is. It sounds nice on 94.1 HD-2. WPHT is also on WOGL HD-3. WIP used to be on 94.1 HD-3 before it moved to the main channel & now WYSP is on the HD-3.

It seems the "2" in HD2 represents the approximate number of people who know or care about HD radio.

<snicker> Clever...I prognosticate that Internet radio - whether using a patch cord from a smartphone or using an in-dash version of the Grace Internet Radio ilk - will overwhelm both HD radio and satellite radio within, say, two years.

I agree with you HD radio has a smaller coverage area than AM or FM analog and XMSirius is limited to 100 channels produced by XM itself with some agreements with cable networks. At some point Web Radio thats connected via satellite transmitter or Wifi transmitter will have to be the standard on cars.

It's possible, though the data question needs to be resolved. WIth caps of 2 gigs on an increasing number of mobile plans, who is going to pony up the extra cash for extra "bytes?" Or will people really pay yet another subscription fee for mobile access specific to the car? (I love having Pandora available, but much regular use in the car and I'm hitting that cap long before the month is up.)

For $48 a year you can pay for Slacker Radio Plus, which lets you download the music while at home (on wifi) for listening later. So, no mobile data usage required. You pick the stations (i.e. the formats) you want, and launch the app while at home to update your cache.

I don't have this, but if I did a lot of driving, liked a lot of music, and had a capped data plan, I would. (None of those things are true for me).

That is a risk. However we just re-upped with Verizon that set the cap at 4GB under a "twice is nice" promotion or something like that.

The advent of WiMax solutions -- or whatever it is that Comcast and Cablevision promote with their wide area Wifi solutions -- might very well provide cap bypassing alternatives.

If and when I'm within their service areas, sure. When I drive to the hinterlands...meh, not so much. :)

Granted, I can take the iPod I already own, hook it up to any number of fairly inexpensive mobile charger/transmitters, and no need to worry about wifi or anything else (a bit along the lines of the Slacker Radio solution). But if the point was that a radio-esque experience via the web would overtake it on the, um, radio, that's where the data issues come into play.

The company is actually Sirius-XM, Sirius bought XM and I believe most of their content is produced out of Sirius in NYC. A smaller amout is produced out of the former XM in DC. They've actually been squeezing out more content on the XM satellites with Sirius-XM 2.0.

Per FCC rules could CBS purchase another signal in the region? Or would they instead need to sacrifice one of their existing signals?

As discussed here recently, the answer is "yes" if there are 20 or more "independent media voices" in Philadelphia (as that term is defined by the FCC) and "no" if there are not. Those are hard to count but there are probably still more than 20 despite the recent merger of Comcast and NBC.

However, if CBS acquires a station that is that owner's only station in the market (which it would have done had it acquired WKDN), it would be decreasing the number of voices by 1. If that 1 is the difference between 19 and 20, it would itself make the deal illegal.

There are far more than 20 "independent media voices" in the market, and it's not hard to define. Any full-power (i.e., not translator or class D FM) radio station within the Arbitron market or TV station within the DMA counts - not just the big players (Salem, Radio Disney, Beasley, Greater Media, CBS, Clear Channel, R1, Jerry Lee, WXPN, WRTI, WHYY) but also the little guys - 690, 740, 800, 900, 1110, 1180, 1310, 1340, 1360, 1460, 1540 all count as independent media voices, and we haven't even hit FM or TV yet. The full count is probably close to 40 when you figure in all the college FMs and such.

Any contact info for peeps who can "Philly-Speak" correctly? Looking to move back east, and, this would be perfect.

Searched the www and found nothing to send demos to.

Help please.

I'm stuck in Kansas!

Family Radio can keep their translators. They can pay Merlin to downgrade 106.9 to HD and then put Family Radio on the HD2, and the translators can translate the HD2.

Sent resume and aircheck to Al, last night at email posted. As of this morning had not heard back.
If anything relevant info wise breaks, I'll post. Thanks
