In chicago CBS flipped Fresh 105.9 to a simulcast of WBBM
so anything is possible here 98.1 i doubt it but stranger things have happend
Was Fresh 105.9 No. 4 6+ in Chicago?
Hate to say it, but 6+ numbers are a beauty demo.
They mean
nothing in comparison to how WCFS was faring in specific demos (and WCFS was a cheapo replacement for their failed "FreeFM" talker, and had quite a bit of voice-tracking).
See, CBS has
three FM stations in Chicago: WBBM-FM/96.1, WJMK/104.3 and WCFS/105.9, as opposed to two FMs in Philly and New York. And WJMK was flipped from adult hits "JackFM" to 70s/80s classic hits (i.e., retro "Top 40") "K-Hits" earlier in the year, so pulling the plug on "FreshFM" on WCFS also can be seen as a bit of a protectionist move for "K-Hits."
I would never have considered putting WBBM on FM as being fearful of Merlin Media. After all, they saw Randy Micheals getting laughed out of the market trying - and utterly failing - to install his "Big One" aggressive talk formula on Tribune's WGN-AM... which sports a 55-dead demo.
CBS will not blow up WOGL. WKDN's weak signal + plus Merlin's pathetic track record = no threat to KYW.
Now, could they buy a suburban FM as a complementary simulcast of KYW, and not a total relocation off the AM dial (which would be beyond foolish)? Wouldn't be shocked if they did. But not a full-market-FM. That would be 5-10 years away.
Plus, KYW has two things Merlin will never be able to have: cross-promotion from sister TV station KYW/3, (
never underestimate the power of corporate synergy) and potential access to a
big marketing budget to reinforce the stations' identity.
