It's official

I wonder whether this acquisition makes it more, or less likely that Cumulus will actually operate WFAS from the Bronx, rather than selling it or leaving it in Westchester County. Now that Cumulus will have control of WPLJ and WABC, 'FAS could be the third station in a cluster.

IMHO, Cumulus probably won't touch WABC and WPLJ since they're both profitable. The question is what will they put on 103.9 assuming it moves to the Bronx? ???

I know I've asked a hundred times, and this doesn't affect NYC, but what happens to the Last Bastion stations? Are they absorbed in to Cumulus, or do they remain in the trust? Citadel usually still operates these.

In regards to WFAS-FM: It is my understanding they've always done very well as-is. No need to mess with them either in my opinion...

True, but to paraphrase that line from the "Diff'rent Strokes" theme song, what might be right for White Plains, may not be right for New York City.

Simulcast WABC on 103.9. Simple solution. Problem solved. Makes sense for the cheapo suits at Cumulus.

That would be great if Cumulus will take over the Citadel stations including WABC and WPLJ. Cumulus owns 7 stations in the entire Hudson Valley including WKXP/WZAD's "The Wolf", WCZX's "New Mix 97.7", WPDH, WEOK/WALL's "True Oldies Channel", WKNY and WFAS. I hope WABC and WPLJ are the new players at Cumulus. Good luck with your success.

"Simple" is not always that simple, Nathan.

On 770, WABC serves an enormous area - the entire New York City Arbitron market and big chunks of Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, all of New Jersey, a bunch of Pennsylvania, and then some.

On 103.9, "WABC-FM" would usefully serve the Bronx, Manhattan, part of Queens, part of Westchester, and parts of Bergen, Hudson, Union and Essex counties in New Jersey...and that's about it. How much branding and imaging is it worth expending on promoting the new "103.9" when much of your 770 audience won't be able to hear it - or worse yet, will hear something else (Long Island's WRCN, for instance) on that frequency?

Not to say Cumulus won't try, but...

A 103.9 WABC-FM simulcast would be great for city building penetration where the AM has a tough time, though I don't know how much that's ultimately worth, even in the PPM world.

They also own WRRV/WRRB Middletown/Poughkeepsie. I also think that Cumulus should buy 101.9 simulcast it with WRRV in Middletown or something or at least model it after WRRV or simulcast WRRV on 103.9 and move it to the Bronx increase it's coverage to all over North Jersey up into Northern Passaic County.

Emmis is not doing that great with WRXP, which plays lots of new rock. So tweaking 'RXP to sound like WRRV would somehow cause it to gain lots of listeners?
But perhaps 103.9 could broadcast modern rock from the Bronx, to fill the void if WRXP drops the format.

A class A from the Bronx won't do much for midtown building penetration, and 103.9 can't go any farther south than it's already going.

Any idea if Cumulus will sell some of their smaller market holdings off? They are in some rather small markets, markets like CC started trying to get out of several years ago.
