It's official...

I think they will handle it like comcast does. April Phillies are first to get bumped. September/October Flyers & Sixers. Of course all will be bumped by the eagles.

The Phillies are the first to get bumped from Comcast because they have an alternative destination: Channel 57. Same will be true now on the radio: 1210.

The Phillies OTA flagship is WPHL-17.

No no. I'm strictly talking about comcast games. When CSN has Flyers or 76ers in April/May they bump the Phillies to the Comcast network. In September its the Flyers/76ers who get bumped to the comcast network.

Has anyone ever heard the promo on the WIP stream for them being "the year-round home of Philadelphia sports"? They play an Eagles clip, then the Flyers, then the Sixers. Finally, when they play the clip for "Phillies Sunday baseball," the clip that they use (of them clinching their fifth straight division pennant) sounds so analog and tinny, you'd think they'd got the clip from television!

I think you can blame 1210's archive system for that. The one game WIP did get to broadcast on FM this season did sound very good but just very flat since they obviously were simply piping in 1210's feed.

I think the broadcasts on WIP will sound better next year because they're the flagship. The Phillies on WOGL HD-3 doesn't sound very good.

I agree with Nick a bit further back in the conversation here. I really do like to listen to the games while driving and like them on AM. Good ol' free, long distance radio... I realize and accept I may be in the minority...

Then there is not much to complain about, is there?

In the end, the out-of-market area fans who want WPHT will still get it instead of having to listen to the games on WLBR or WSAN (I forget, what's the problem with that?). The clear-channel AM junkies will still get their fix. (By the way, FM is free too.)

The folks who decry the interruptions to regular programming on WPHT will finally be able to see the light, in case there is any residual denial after November's ratings.

The Eagles won't get interrupted, even if Andy avoids the hangman's noose. The Flyers will probably not get interrupted during the last 40 or so games of the NHL playoffs. And the Sixers, ah, well...

And Phillies' fans will finally get the choice they should have had for years.

And yet, no one from the Phillies or WIP has made an official announcement. Odd, isn't it?

Try searching for articles on the topic, you'll find that only radio-info has really covered this. So, the title of this thread is ironic. It is not official, at least not yet.

Until then, we might get to hear the games on 94.1 in Sundays, in July and August, and be told to feel damn lucky for it.

Oh, I'm not complaining. And yes, FM IS free too. I just lose the FM station in question way before I lose the current AM station. (depending on which way I'm driving... anyway...) But I guess as long as I don't have to pay for it, aside from commercial breaks, I'll live with whatever happens.
I'm not all that impressed by the Eagles broadcasts on FM though. But I don't suppose with the state of the season, I'd be impressed with the Eagles even if the broadcasts were beamed directly into my brain via psychic projection.

With the plethora of superior delivery channels today, the talk folks don't have to and aren't going to tolerate pre-emptions for paid programming on the lo-fi terrestrial carrier. We've gone elsewhere (web, satellite). 1210's off-season PPMs will suffer even more due to the erosion and the lackluster "live and local talk" filler and the 4 hours old canned Squeaky Smerconish borefest (like CNN without the personality!) won't bring in too many new converts. Then they can complete the $urrender and run Fox Sports on 1210 the rest of the day and get the WGMP "Gimp" identity back. Lingerie League on WOGL next? CBS=Canned By Sports.

I don't know why that (web, satellite, etc) would be any more true for talk than it would be for other programming, including major league baseball.

What I do believe about WPHT is that live and (sorta) local may be what people said they wanted, but that might not be what they really want for talk. News might be a different story. WPHT's story is complex. Dropping Hannity looked like a mistake, but I can't say that I know the answer there.

KFI is quite successful in LA. So are a number of CC's Rush Radio-branded stations, and a couple of dozen others like WBZ, WBAP, and WSB. Other than those, the level of success of talk stations is all over the place.

MLB to this point has a successful web and smartphone subscription model, unlike talk radio.

The days of MLB being on 50kW clear channel stations are on the wane, and I agree that this is sad. Growing up in a non-baseball city (Buffalo) in the 1960s my summer nights were spent listening to Ernie Harwell with the Tigers on WJR because that signal propagates very well across Lake Erie.

Fast forward to 2011 -- I consider the $15 I spent for my iPhone for MLB audio access last year to have been worth the money.

Also, up here in Allentown, our cable systems don't get the Comcast Network, just CSN. So we are out-of-luck for bumped Phillies games in April. I might put pen to paper (figuratively) and ask our cable TV provider (and the Phils) regarding our options.

As was said up-thread, the folks inconvenienced by interference to WIP-FM are relatively few in number...and will likely retain local affiliates for most games.

I still don't believe these games will be on 94.1 on any kind of regular basis.

Neither WIP nor the Phillies have announced this, or even that CBS has the contract. Why might that be?

Given their conservative position with respect to the recent sale of WKDN to Merlin (pending approval, of course) , my uneducated hunch is that folks believe everything is just fine, and nothing changes next year.
