It's Past KIKK's Bedtime...

...yet CBS Sports Radio continues on into the night on 650. It's 8:15 at night. Someone forgot to flip the switch? It's not like KIKK to stay up and bully WSM around.

KIKK 650 is still on at a 10:35pm check. If I null it out I get a good signal from WSM.

The KIKK sign-on/sign-off times are normally pretty precise; obviously on a timer. So something must have failed. The station is little more than a satellite receiver run through a playout computer for local spot/ID insertion which is fed to the transmitter. It is most certainly unattended all the time, except for occasional updates of local spots.

A couple of weeks ago I found KIKK on the air just after 6am, well before sunrise, so there must have been a similar error then.

KIKK was still on the air just before midnight on Tuesday. Wednesday evening I found it on the air during checks at 8pm and 10pm, but it was gone at 11:30pm. Someone finally bothered to check the transmitter monitor, or someone brought their attention to the problem.

One thing I did notice: the KIKK nighttime signal is actually quite good, even at my Cy-Fair location. Little grief from WSM while driving home. If they were ever able to get night authorization with a directional null towards Nashville, the coverage wouldn't be half bad.

The FCC no longer issues PSSA's or PSRA's. All they require is formal notification and for the power level not to exceed 500 watts or licensed day or critical power (Whichever is smallest). At 6am many class D stations are allowed full day power, with proper notification of course. I don't see any PSSA or PSRA information for KIKK on the FCC's website, but that's not to say it doesn't exist.
