It's So Beautiful...

George West, welcome to Houston. I haven't heard Beautiful Music on the FM in years. I can close my eyes and just see my father sitting there at the table, doing his crossword puzzle, drinking his coffee, and listening to this very music.

I know it's temporary, but hey, thanks for the memory revisited.

Btw, it's rebroadcasting Central Texas College's KNCT Killeen. Clean, beautiful signal in the 4-4.

My driveway must be in a sweet spot, as I am hearing the Beautiful Music station in my car with a fairly decent signal in Cy-Fair. However in my living room on a portable Radio I'm hearing a good signal from KKHA with its "Happy Radio" Oldies/Classic Hits format. Amazing what a few feet of distance can change. If I move the radio around the house I find the Beautiful Music trying to override KKHA.

I was hearing KBPA in My garage the other night covering up two local LPFM stations, very strong signal. from San Marcos, 100,000 watts at 1995 feet ASL. If it is really skip You should be hearing other channels with distance stations too, If not perhaps Stan is on to something.

The Beautiful Music was pretty solid in downtown this morning, even while driving through the buildings. I don't think I've ever heard "Tomorrow" (From Annie) by Stanley Black on the radio. Although it isn't something I would spend hours listening to, it was refreshing to hear something different.

Edit: It is loud and clear on my Accurian tabletop HD radio up on the 15th floor.

In the 1970s, KYND-FM was at the top of the ratings with this format. I remember visiting their studio in the Pasadena State Bank building, seeing the open-reel playback decks, each loaded with "beautiful music." They offered free competition to Muzak, and better fidelity to boot.

If you're traveling to South Texas, be sure to tune in to KLUX in Robstown on 89.5. They are also airing the Beautiful Music format, although they are Catholic owned and operated, so you'll hear some faith-promoting material at various times throughout the day.

Really cool when stations from outside the area skip into H-town. It's a nice reminder that there are actually radio stations that have good formats -- just not here, anymore.

It is pretty pathetic when people get more excited about skip and stunts than they are about existing formats in the market.

DX, skip, satellite, HD-2, streaming. Only for most of my life only DX and skip. That is the sum total of my radio listening from the time I owned my first radio. Either I am more discriminating in my musical taste than most people, or I have an evil curse on my life that I will never live somewhere with radio formats I enjoy.

One can not beat the Schulke Radio Productions for that Beautiful Music Format. Now that is real music as opposed to the Devil's Music being aired today!!!!

Jim Shulke and Phil Stout formed Stereo Radio Productions. which, IIRC, did not become Shulke Radio Productions until the format was on its last legs, about 30 years ago.

The simple acronym for Beautiful Music format, BM, still seems appropriate today.

But my mother loved it and asked why I played the devil's rock and roll on that other station.

I guess I'm pretty pathetic, then. I'm more excited about the current NGEN stunt & subsequent debut on Monday, than anything else that exists in our market.

Thanks for pointing it out, Bruce. ;)

Edit to add: Don't fret, I know what you actually meant.

On my commute this morning the Beautiful Music signal on 92.5 was pretty much nonexistent along 290; however once I got inside the Loop reception rapidly improved. Driving along Studemont/Montrose the signal was actually quite good. Still rebroadcasting KNCT. However on my evening commute the station was not heard.

This morning while checking 91.3 in the Montrose area for any sign of life from K217GB (still off the air, BTW) I was hearing KPVU and KNCT (the real one) fight it out. The 92.5 audio was about 15 seconds behind the direct signal on 91.3.

There are three metro area LPFMs with CP's for 92.5: KZCV in Baytown, KJJG in South Houston, and a third yet-to-be named station in northeast Harris County. Could what we are hearing be one of those stations in testing mode?

You mean, the same "devil's music" being played on 91.7, a radio station allegedly owned and operated by a Christian broadcaster?

Don't know, Frog. Given the signal strength I heard, and the part of town it covered, I tend to believe it originated from the stick on Patton, behind the Pilot truck stop. It was solid here at the house, no dropouts, no fading. The idea of "skip" is a bit silly, given KNCT would've had to skip channels, too.

Something tells me K224EI just took 223 for a test drive. Glad they made it interesting.

So what happened? I always thought the Beautiful Music format was, and is, a great format. Is certainly made a fortune to Muzak, and its imitators.

But that was decades ago. The audience has completely changed, both socially and demographically.

Listen to the underwriting announcements on KNCT. They are all aimed at the elderly.
