It's Star 94's Big 90's Weekend...Well Sort Of

After doing its big 90's weekend for several months and seeing ratings climb, Star 94 is identifying this weekend as the Big 90's Weekend. But only 1 out of every 4 or 5 songs is from the 90's. I found listening a little confusing, but perhaps that's just because there's been a change.

Did the September PPM show listeners were getting burned out on the 90's songs? I haven't seen the weekend numbers. But if that's the case, it could be problematic since Star's recent big growth with men was probably a result of the weekends.

They're reacting to the changes at B98.5 (and their decline in ratings this month) by making their Hot AC-approach more cutting-edge - more currents and cutting-edge new music more frequently

Personally, I've been waiting for this for months!

I think it is hurting Star 94 by killing most of the 90s on the weekend. Lately I've been excited for the weekend to arrive because the Big 90s Weekend starts. Probably one of the main reasons I listen to Star 94. I've noticed that a few of the 90s hits were never played on Star 94 in the 90s and were on many of the nationwide CHRs at that time. I remember Star 94 was very mainstream CHR post Power 99 and then changed PDs in 1994 and became very adult leaning. It was Hot AC from 89-92, CHR 92-94, Adult CHR 94-02. When the Beat became rhythmic in 02, Star 94 had an identity crisis up until last year when it segued into Hot AC. I almost thought for a while after the Beat switched in 02 that Star 94 was full on Hot AC for a couple of years then it went back to Adult leaning CHR up until last year. Very confusing! Will they go back again? I think the Hot AC thing is what all of us have been asking them to do forever and I think it is working.

I agree.

The All 90's weekends were good for starters (and also good to do every now and then for special holiday weekends), but I think it's better now that they do regular music with SOME 90's stuff thrown in every now and then. In addition to thinking that the weekend format thing would eventually burn out, I also thought having all these stations that sound one way during the week then suddenly completely flip up on the weekends was a bit weird, to be honest (but didn't mind or say anything because I figured at least things were changing). I think it sort of alienates people who love the original main format, especially when most people don't really have anywhere else on the dial to go if they don't want to hear all 80's or 90's. What probably should happen is Journey gets placed on a better signal.

Maybe they can adopt a special show or time slot or something, called "90's at 9", where they play all 90's at 9pm during the week or something of that nature.

I believe as time goes on, people will begin to catch on and associate the new definition of "90's weekend" with "playing (more) 90's hits on the weekend than the week" rather than the literal "90's weekend (all 90's weekend)"

Atlanta's just out of control right now! Exciting things happening.

I disagree with those trying to spin this as a good thing for Star. It's Lindy's first real mis-step as Star's Program Director. You can't tell the listeners you're one thing and then do another. They should have manned up and changed the name of the weekend. Run promos saying "you've been asking for your favorite new songs along with the your favorite 90's". 90's king sized weekend or 90's and more or something like that only more creative. :)

This will continue the slow downward trend of Star. The reality is B98.5 has put a whooping on Star in the last 60 days. I know this board loves to love Star but B98.5 has done a stellar job of blunting Star's growth and now sending it spinning down.

Welcome back, Nyte. I was wondering where you were...probably listening to old Kid Curry airchecks. But I agree with you about the name. Or...maybe they should just do the regular format on most weekends and do the real Big 90's Weekend every so often as a special weekend.

Probably even better.

They may even be trying to phase out of always doing it on a regular basis.

During the last 60 days, Star was still doing the all-90s weekends - Lindy's gotta try something different, to differentiate his station from B98.5, which was basically coming at Star head-on with its own format, and beating it

If the main reason people listen to a station is to hear it break format, something's definitely wrong IMO

I do like their normal weekday Hot AC format, but I also enjoy listening to the all-90s weekends as well. I think it is good for them to do both. Keep it like it was...Hot AC during the week and all 90s on the weekend.

I was about to say...with Star weakening, could Q possibly move away from the adult sound?

I think it's more a case of how Star is moving back towards adult CHR, which is probably going to hurt Q100 (especially on the weekends) - I don't think we can say that star is "weakening" until we see how this new move affects ratings next month

You people on this second page are reading my mind, as I was also wondering and thinking these same exact questions. I didn't mention it, but I don't always say 100% of what I have in mind in all cases. ...

I think it's still too early to predict what will happen reaction-wise as a result of the most recent turn of events regarding ratings and the ac/hot ac sound (which is one of the reasons I didn't bother to bring it up, although the questions did exist in my mind). Keep in mind that things were a certain way for quite a while, so it is possible that any unusual things that happened in these last ratings could be a one time fluke, and even if any changes occur based on the results of last ratings, it's too early to guess and assume how permanent these changes will be. It's like having two or more months of sunny warm weather, then one day we see it's a cool drizzly day and we begin to question if this means a permanent Global Climate Change is eminent. Now, if things continue to unfold as they did in the last ratings period in regard to the ac sound in the next one to two ratings trackings, then I guess it's safe for a bunch of more solid hypothesis to be rolled out and become truly excited / disappointed with whatever changes that could occur. Right now, all we can do is have wishful thinking.

I already have my wishes for what I hope happens. I'm sure you all do as well.
