I see in the Dish Network's Program Guide that some of the channels(MTV, Nickeledon, G4, etc.) are off the air last week for two or three nights in the row. This took place between 2am-4am, one channel goes off the air at 3am, the other at a different time.
I think the reason they do this is that there's going to be a solar interference to one of the satellites in the fall. It causes a brief disruption in service and a loss of signal altogether. This is nothing to worry about.
Years ago when we had cable TV(around '91), a solar interference causes some channels to scramble. The scrambling is no similiar to the HBO or other pay TV channels but it was scary and too freaky to look at the kind of scramble. This was when I was watching Nickeledon, then switch to VH1 and saw them scramble.
I don't know what scrambling system my cable company uses back then but it was SO SCARY to look at. While the channels were scrambled, I can hear weird noise instead of a faint signal for the pay channels.
Things looked different then before satellite TV service swamped the nation. Solar outages will become an annoyance to their subscribers, but nevertheless, it won't be a major factor.
