It's Sun Outage Time Again

It's the fall version of the phenomena where the sun causes solar interference to the satellites, thereby causing pixellation or total loss of signal to your picture. These usually last for as long as 15 minutes.

So, in the event the channel you are watching gets a little whacky, no need to call your customer service rep...this is why. :)

I see in the Dish Network's Program Guide that some of the channels(MTV, Nickeledon, G4, etc.) are off the air last week for two or three nights in the row. This took place between 2am-4am, one channel goes off the air at 3am, the other at a different time.

I think the reason they do this is that there's going to be a solar interference to one of the satellites in the fall. It causes a brief disruption in service and a loss of signal altogether. This is nothing to worry about.

Years ago when we had cable TV(around '91), a solar interference causes some channels to scramble. The scrambling is no similiar to the HBO or other pay TV channels but it was scary and too freaky to look at the kind of scramble. This was when I was watching Nickeledon, then switch to VH1 and saw them scramble.
I don't know what scrambling system my cable company uses back then but it was SO SCARY to look at. While the channels were scrambled, I can hear weird noise instead of a faint signal for the pay channels.

Things looked different then before satellite TV service swamped the nation. Solar outages will become an annoyance to their subscribers, but nevertheless, it won't be a major factor.

"Solar Intereference" at 2am, and Sun Outages are two completley different things. A Sun Outage occurs when the sun is directly "behind" the satellite so that signal from the sun basically over powers the satellite's signal in your receive antenna.

PanAmSat has a great sun outage calculator on their website. They give you a quick list of satellites however you can enter any satellite orbital position to find out when your outage occurs.

Don't know if this was responsible, but I did have an odd thing happen with my digital cable yesterday afternoon while watching Encore Love (Channel 154 on my system). . . Without explanation, the video switched to some sort of ID slide/title in Russian (or some language using Cyrillic characters anyway) for about 5 minutes while the regular program audio still played. Flipped up a channel and back again, it returned to normal.
