It's That Time Again... NFL Blackout Watch '08!

When a game is blacked out what does the local station show in it's place. Another game? I ask this beause I can't remember the Chicago Bears ever being blacked out. Seems like someone buys up the remaining tickets if the game is in danger of being blacked out. A related question, if a Monday night game does not sell out what does ESPN put on in it's place in the effected markets?

CBS and Fox would simply air different games in place of the blacked out game on the affiliates in question. As far as ESPN, the cable company, I guess, would simply black out the signal (they normally don't). The local affiliates that simulcast ESPN's feed simply air alternate programming.

By the way, if you're wondering, the Lions and Dolphins games have both sold out for this weekend.

However, Buffalo many not be able to see the Bills game this weekend... because the CBS affiliate is currently in a dispute with Time Warner Cable!

Only if they're stupid. Smart people would just unplug the cable and watch the game over the air if they're in Buffalo. Olean, on the other hand, may be out of luck. They're within the channel 4 broadcast area, but the hills around the city might block OTA signals.

I think they usually put on another game in its place. Though it's been about 1997 or 1998 since the Bocs (my home team) got blacked out.

In recent years, it's been generally a simulcast of ESPNEWS, though in the past, ESPN generally offered an alternate feed to cable systems in markets where an ESPN event would be blacked out. (Many regional networks would do the same thing).

Slightly OT... what happened to the GribbleNation guy who, the last 2-3 seasons, posted weekly NFL Sunday TV distribution maps? I emailed him. I'm still waiting for his response.

ESPN does this with baseball, although back before they significantly cut back on the baseball games, they would offer an alternate game

Having grown up 50 miles east of Buffalo, I can vouch for the fact that playoff games that don't sell out are also blacked out. The famous comeback game with the Houston Oilers was blacked out - I was able to catch a very snowy broadcast on WSTM 3 Syracuse. Then, the blackout rule was that any station broadcasting from within 75 miles of the stadium would be blacked out, so Buffalo and Rochester were blacked out.
I was referring to CANADIAN stations or cable outlets that pick up NFL games like many American cable outlets (And even some OTA stations in the NE) who pick up the CFL. Not American stations from Buffalo or Syracuse carrying only NFL games.

Cheers :)

They still do offer alternative games. Only they do it EARLY in the season (And even then, it's rare, which is why when their game is either delayed or they run into one right in the middle of it, ESPN is stuck offering up "Bonus Coverage" via Baseball Tonight, using the feeds from FSN - Though they try to use the other guys whenever & wherever they can).

Cheers :)

The 506 NFL maps page isn't updated as of this morning, but in Detroit, the local Fox station will carry the Giants-Steelers game at 4 PM.

As far as what will air at 1 PM instead of the Lions game: a movie followed by back-to-back "Cops" reruns.

Or as Terry Foster of The Detroit News put so eloquently this morning:
"A bad football team will be replaced by "Bad Boys" on Sunday." ("Bad Boys" is the series' theme song.)

I feel Detroit's pain all the way out here in Phoenix, Arizona. :'(

When will the Ford Family finally field a team of winners? ???
