It's That Time of the Year Again

I'm sure B101 remembers the first year of Philly Christmas wars...Sunny flipped the first week of November, B101 stayed AC. B101 regretted the decision when the ratings came out and Sunny was among the top 3.
I'm going to miss coming home from college for Thanksgiving and not hearing Christmas music on 104.5

A few years back, B101 was the first station to flip and Sunny flipped just 3 hours later.
I hope the "Sunny" Christmas sound returns to 106.1. It sure can grab a lot of its target demographic with 2 months of Jingle Bells.

Sunny didn't drive away their core listeners in large numbers with the flip to a Christmas format that fit--more or less--with their regular format. My 106 would be driving away everyone they currently have. We can make jokes about whether that's a significant number of listeners, but there's no logical reason to go with the Sunny sound unless a format change is coming, and there's no credible information to that effect. If anything, My would do better borrowing from the B's style moreso than the departed Sunny.

B 101 and WJBR in Wilmington will be the two Christmas stations this year with B cleaning up. Christmas will be huge this year again...make no doubt about it. This continues to work for a couple of reasons:

1. World situation--Iraq, partisan politics, etc. It's comforting music for many.

2. And this should have been figured out by now......Especially once Thanksgiving arrives, the overall # of women (B's demo) want to hear ONLY Christmas music through the holiday. That's why even if we had peace and harmony in the world, this would continue to work.

This week coming up is when many will make the flip.

I found several airchecks of Sunny 104.5's Christmas format that I made back in 2003. It's several days long in total! Now I won't miss Sunny as much.
