It's That Time of Year Again...

Summer is here. Sporadic-E ("E-skip") season is back.

So far, the season is off to a slightly slower than usual start. But, already, I have seen reports of 6 kW WMFS and WMC-TV (5) being seen on the East Coast. And, during a rather intense event on Wednesday evening, I am sure most every Memphis-area FM was making it into The Plains States.

In the next week, or so, we will be approaching seasonal peak. If such geeky pursuits amuse you, keep an eye out. It certainly is a nice break from all things Thaddeus, and the audio is doubtless better.

I'd be happy if WMC-DTV made it to north Shelby County on a desktop digital TV.

It must be tough being the only low-bander left in-town.

You may recall that we had a really, really nasty thunderstorm last year on transition day. It knocked my cable off for about a week. Certainly, 5 was the odd man out.

But, once I fashioned a loop out of #12 for the frequency, I got them fine. That antenna still lives behind the credenza below the TV. But, then again, how many people know enough to measure a loop for channel 5?

The Summer sporadic-E continues, though the season so far has been pretty light.

I did stumble across this. Here is a quick snippet of FM100 being heard in Northern Virginia via "E-skip" today about 330. You'll hear some mild fading, typical of sporadic-E, but the signal was really solid, it seems.

We have had a few whopper E-skip days.

I see listings of Memphis stations being heard quite a bit. Today, I saw WKNO-FM being logged in New York.

I am sure there have been may paths to the west, but I don't know many people listening out there.

Did you know that they can hear just about EVERY Memphis station around the country and there is no "e-skip" required? Al Gore invented this new thing called the internets. ;D

I'll stick with my 3-1/2 wave dipole in the attic ;D
