It's the little things...

I was listening to a very well known, popular, and respected DJ on a very well known, popular, and respected NYC radio station a few days ago. Coming out of "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, the DJ says..."that's Peter Gabriel, former lead singer and drummer for Genesis before they got Phil Collins". OK, Gabriel was never the drummer. Collins was the original drummer and in the group when Gabriel was the lead singer. When Gabriel decided to leave, the band auditioned hundreds of singers but couldn't find the right guy to front the band...until Collins gave it a turn.

I'm a fan of both the DJ and the station...but if you're going to talk about the music, you should know what you're talking about. As I said, it's the little things...

Fingers on a chalkboard.... Bill Drake was probably worried about stuff like this happening

Really no excuse, especially since Genesis just got inducted into the RnR HOF

"OK, Gabriel was never the drummer. Collins was the original drummer and in the group when Gabriel was the lead singer. "

Except Collins was not the original drummer. Chris Stewart was. Collins was the fourth drummer in Genesis. Guess you were both wrong.

OK - Quit beating around the bush and tell us who said it and the station's call letters. What's the use of posting this if you can't tell us who doesn't know Genesis. Or are you just trying to show off your musical knowledge and your better than the DJ.

" Or are you just trying to show off your musical knowledge and your better than the DJ."

If he is, then he needs to go back to the textbooks as Collins was not the original drummer.

dmargalotti: Can I guess the station? Was it Q104.3, as was it during the voicetracked-but-trying-way-too-hard overnight jock's show? His is the dryest delivery I've ever heard. One less reason to "heart" radio.

There is no point in calling out the jock or the station...that was not my intention. That being said, no it was not Q104.3.

You are correct, Collins has only been the drummer for the last 39 years...he wasn't with the band for the first 3 years. But the point remains that Gabriel was NEVER the drummer and the band GOT Collins long before Gabriel decided to leave for a solo career.

Now then, allow me to call out someone else at a radio station: This morning, one of the hosts of WRXP's automated "Basement" overnight show, at the top of the 4 AM hour, had talked about Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland. His last name was pronounced "WEE-land," as opposed to the actual pronunciation, "WAY-land". Flame on...

Actually he pronounces it Wy-Lund. Guess he can say it any way he wants since it is his stage name and not his given name.

Gabriel was never the drummer by name, but Peter started out as a drummer playing in a number of bands prior to forming Genesis. His percussion expertise and how he brought that percussion mix to basically acoustic fronts is often discussed by biographers in many of the works of Genesis. And many historical works of the band talk of Gabriel's influence in the percussion sound for the band and of him often playing drums on tracks or teaching the drummers how he liked the sound, and of course in his solo career, he was very concerned with the percussion aspect of his music first and foremost.

Kind of like playing Blues Brothers and telling the audience it was the Isley Brothers - with such seriousness and authority. As a member of the audience I occasionally perpetrate a faux pas, but I'm a member of the audience.

I heard a jock refer to Stevie Nicks as a guy...

I bet years later, when he was watching Paul McCartney present a Grammy award to "Laurence Hill," he was wondering what all the racket was about...
