It's time to overhaul The Beat

Some of the personalities on this station have been on there since its beginning in 2000. This used to be my favorite station. It used to be very innovative. Now it's just like any other station. It just sound so dull now. They have many good part-timers that they could make full-time. Rickey Smiley is good, but after that, sleepers. I thought I would never say this, but K104 sound so much better than 97.9 now. They sound more energized and better with overall presentation. It would be nice to even hear new imaging on The Beat as well. Instead of going forward and improving, I just feel that this station is going backwards and sounding worse. Just my two cents.

Buc, with any format, there is an expiration date. In a way 97.9 has reached that point. I think the station should keep the format, just time to move in some new talent and imaging.

Slam, I totally agree....

^That play list makes me want to vomit

I second that, and the reason I second that, is because that playlist would make The Beat a water-down rhythmic station.

Hehehe. I just merged Energy 92.7 in San Fran with The Beat here... My car is washed, my laundry is done and I've washed the dishes... What else do I have to do? ;)

I third that motion......What the hell? CBS tried that with that failed HOT/WILD 100 crap that lasted 15 minutes.

Like me and Slam said, new imaging and fresh voices would give The Beat new life I believe.

I haven't listened to 97.9 in a long time. The music isn't innovative enough. It bores me. Ricky Smiley is a hack. Time to do something different that's for sure. I quit listening to both hip hop stations just after the war in Iraq started because I realized radio talent has no Ida of what the truth is. That and Nannette Lee agreed with Micheal Erick Diesoon about GWB being a redneck. That's racism towards your listening public that isn't black. You dont have to agree with GWB's policies, but dont agree that people that do and listen to your station are rednecks. Its time on air talent stopmtalking about stuff they know nothing about. At least in the "music" industry. I've heard ignorance on may stations when it comes to such subjects.

That's what is wrong with The Beat now. A station that started out being an innovator with it's music, programming, imaging, and personalites, have now turned into an imitator following K104's lead. If it's any consolation to you board, Nannette Lee is no longer with the station.

I heard Sam Putney and The Whig are looking for gigs, maybe they can get a gig over there ;)

I kid, but I agree that this is also a bigger issue than just The Beat. Mainstream urban/hiphop has lost touch with a good chunk of its listeners. Not everyone who listens to 97.9 in their key demos are living the kristal/diamond/Sean Combs lifestyle, which also indicates that many of the artists that they play dont target their fans as well. I would say that not only imagining/on-air staff being changed out would fix this issue, but also including true underground hiphop to their rotation. Make it the alternative station for the urban listener.

Calling someone a redneck is not racist.

I agree that the mainstream hip hop today sucks, but you know what, this is radio...You gotta play the hits!!!!!!!!

Hence why The Beat should be an innovator, not an imitator. Id rather listen to socially-relavent artists rapping/singing about something they really know than the same voice processed beyonce/little kim clones.

We can say that all we want, but until the kids get tired of hearing that crap, then they(K104 and KBFB) will keep on trucking.

I guess that's why Lupe Fiasco is giving up rap for punk rock. He's not rapping about the "right" things, so radio is not playing him. Pitiful......

I think the hip hop industry is struggling as a whole and it is reflected in the stations that play that genre of music. I used to spin it all the time back in my teen years. Now its just not the same. Its sucks. There are very few artists out there that are worth anything. I really believe this is a part of the entertainment industry that is trying desperately to hang on. I could be wrong. Its just how I see it.

I cant remember who the morning show was a few years back. I think it was Steve Harvey when The Beat first started. Their Midday guy was also let go. Anyways I enjoyed Chris "Action" Jackson and The Show. They seems to be doing their own thing and it was unique and creative. That seems to have gone away.

I checked in a few times to K104 when I heard that Skip Murphy was leaving. Its a shame that show split up. They really had a good on air chemistry. I loved Sam's news. That guy was funny. Wig was a glorified board op/producer but he knew his role and Chris Arnolds sports was, well sports.
