It's time to step up, People

Last Friday, Kanye West was telling millions of viewers on NBC, and he is blaming GW Bush for NOT helping these poor people OUT of the city of New Orleans. If you can't get through Bush, who can you turn to? Today's biggest Mega-Millionaires (Diddy, Jay-Z, Master P, Snoop, Ricky Williams, The Manning Brothers, Shaq, Farve, & LeBron) and even players from BOTH the Saints AND the Hornets SHOULD Help these desperate people out of this troubled city. You what GW did to these people? Send buses out, while he enjoys living the first class life-At your OWN expense. They Need to fly OUT of N.O., and they should have done it! I'm from Houston BTW, and we are trying to welcome these people and give them ALL the help they can give as we speak. Most of us Texans visit this great city, and some even call Louisiana home. My friend lives there-and she is O.K. Today, many of us are going to churches, with these people on their minds. They're homeless, and they are NOT sure when will they EVER get paid. Many of these people live on social security, and they only get paid ONCE-That's IT! The People behind Social Security NEEDS to Pay The people who CAN'T work TWICE every Month! $898 is NOT enough! These people need to get paid on the 1st and the 15th of every month! I am NOT here to talk about money! I am here, however to talk about these victims, evacuees, and the survivors of this tragic storm, who are right now starting a brand new life as we speak HERE in the city of Houston. and right now, they need your help. Thanks and God Bless.

I've been watching from the sidelines, but since this board is now a free-for-all...

First off, don't tell people in Louisiana to step up. Every community in this state either got obliterated by the storm or is filled to capacity with people seeking refugee. We are doing our part.

Secondly, the law requires that the states request federal help to come in. It's easy to blame W, but before you do, blame Blank-O and her indecisiveness. If you aren't in the local area, you don't see her painting the rosy picture. She tried to go through our senator - Mary Landrieu - to get the help we need. That's why the $10.5 billion was passed before we got anyone here.

I have friends where I work that are at FEMA Regional HQ right now. The word from them - and these are not FEMA employees toeing the government line - is that FEMA has truckloads and truckloads of stuff for us, but no one on the state level will tell them where to bring it. FEMA doesn't run the show. The state runs the show. FEMA is just there to make sure that all of the supplies are porvided. After all, Mississippi took it bad too, but they have the help they need. Why? Because they asked for it.

Go ahead. Tell me I am wrong. Let your hatred from W blind you from the facts. CSPAN was running congressional hearings yesterday that were shot in June. The Hurricane Center Director (Max somthing with an M) predicted this very thing. He said the levees wouldn't hold. He said that NOLA could not evacuate everyone because there are 125K people without cars. Experts tried to warn people that this would happen, but no one would listen.

Understand, I am not saying anyone is blameless. Nagin didn't have a pre-storm plan that was worth a s---. Blanco seemed to have assumed that since OEP couldn't hear from New Orleans, that everything was fine. Bush should have pushed more for Blanco to ask for help. Mississippi had 2000 guards in Biloxi-Gulfport Tuesday night. New Orleans? 120. That specifically falls on the state. The media has plenty of blame to take also. Don't roll in with your sat. trucks and sat. phones and report that communications are down. Use those to help link up the first reponders. I would hope that people coordinating rescue efforts aren't watching TV.

And finally, it troubles me that we are raising people to depend on the government for everything. Specifically, I am talking about the Convention Center people. Help wasn't coming. Get up and leave. This is an example of government failing on every level, starting with the local leadership on up to the state and even federal on some levels. People need to start looking out for #1.

One question though... What happened to our naval ships? There were supposed to be 4 coming, plus that big USS Comfort hospital ship. Where are they?
______________

You hit it right on the mark. I have always said that Blanco is without a clue, and this just proves it further. It is almost as if everyone was waiting for someone else to take charge, and nobody with the authority to do so, did. You are also correct in people fending for themselves. My question as a spectator in all this deals with the poverty level in NO. I am not wondering if and when the government will increase the monthly payout to those on its welfare rolls. I am wanting to know why so many able bodied young people are living off the government in such a huge city filled with jobs. I am from Texas, and honestly, I do not want my city to take on the job of supporting so many people who could be working but choose not to do so. My only sympathy in this disaster is for the elderly who were truly trapped and could not leave their homes and for those who followed orders and evacuated their homes, only to later deal with the fear of those homes being looted.

WOW What a great post. Thanks for clearing the air!

The NO jurricane emergency plan directs the MAYOR of that great city to use school and city buses to get the citizens out of the city BEFORE disaster hits. He did nothing. The governor did little. There is plenty of blame to go around.

I saw a press conference with Brett Favre the other day and he has already helped a little bit....He hired a driver of a tractor trailer to hall a truck full of supplies, food, etc. in Nashville and told him to take it as far south as he could. As far as the others you mentioned, I don't know but you are right!!

Some of the artists and atheletes from this area have already stepped up to the plate, but you are gonna find after all this, everyone screwed up and is wagging the dog in NOLA.

Explain how Jeffereson Parish, which was under water, is ready to accept residents back to survey the damage one week later? Even St.Tammany Parish which had Slidell Kicked got it back together?

But what I love was Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard coming on national TV and saying how FEMA was cutting the lines to emergency operation center and it took the sheriff's office to stop them from cutting the line again.... I wonder what is fact and what is B/S espcailly with warnings on TV that people wearing FEMA shirts with Guns should have anything given to them they want (as they are crooks and not the real FEMA)

I thought that as far as the convention center that nobody in the federal government knew they were their and they were surrouned by water like the most of NO as far as county city and state Government they should have asked for help bvefore it struck and the federal government should have the authority to step in and they should have anyway.

When they started showing the people at the Convention Center on Wednesday, there wasn't water on the street there. There is an interstate ramp 2 blocks from it.

Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana and Mississippi on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to allow FEMA assets to be moved into place for faster deployment. Mississippi had National Guard troops put in Hattiesburg, but they couldn't get out until Tuesday because of damage to the highway.

As someone that believes in states' rights, the federal government should not be able to just come in and take over a situation. They can't have the inside knowledge of places that the local officials will have. They are best in a supportive role. If the feds screw up as much as people complain about, you should want them stepping back more instead of stepping on the local people.
______________

I agree. Deion Sanders has challenged every pro athlete to donate at least $1000 through payroll deductions. So let's see how many of the nation's richest people step up with some sizeable donations.

As for the convention center people... I saw on fox news channel on friday night that people were trying to walk across a bridge and get out. I forget which bridge and where it lead to. But, they were stopped and told they couldn't leave. So, people were trying to leave and go someplace better but were denied.

As far as I know the ships are on the way. They're suppost to arrive throughout the week.

I'm not neccessarily arguing against people relying too much on the government, just trying to clarify the two mentioned situations (from what I've seen on tv).

That's because it was no longer safe to cross into Jefferson Parish. Friday afternoon, looters set fire to a shopping mall and shot at the firemen so they couldn't put out the fire. There were 2 more incidents with fires involving them setting buildings on fire that had people in them and then shooting at the people to keep them trapped in the building.

By Friday night, help was there. Wednesday, Nagin encouraged them to set out on foot to find help, but I am doubtful that there were radios and TVs for them to know that.
______________

More people need to hear this in the Media...

Hey everybody...

I wondered if this wasn't the case. To hear it in the media, you would think President Bush went down there and poured water all over that city. And, that he wants all people of color dead.

It's horrible how they're trying to place blame on him, when the fault lies at the local level. No matter what you might think of the guy.

We had all that aid ready to go and the local leaders just dropped the ball.

To all of you in Louisiana, Mississippi & Alabama whose lives have been torn apart from Katrina, my thoughts & prayers are with all of you. It's been very hard to watch the alphabet networks & see just how veneralble the strongest nation in the world is to catastrophic events, regardless of how they are created. And it's even more disturbing to learn how "politicians," regardless of party affiliation and position, could just "drop the ball-big time" on all levels. I hope that we, as Americans, will begin to rise up and begin to change the way we are "represented".

> First off, don't tell people in Louisiana to step up.<

I agree. The people trapped by the storm need the help and assistance of all peoples, whether on our soil or foreign. Thank God there are countries who can overlook the shortcomings of our elected officials and realize that this is a humanitarian effort, and thank goodness that much (if not all) of the monies raised for relief efforts will come through agencies such as the Red Cross, and the like. If you remember the government wants to change the tax-exempt status of some of these organizations. And those from the government who will be doing the "sweat equity" in NOLA, MS, and AL will be people just like you and me, NOT politicians! But who will be stumping in front of the reporters and mics? You got it, politicians!

Why? Because they asked for it.<

More stories of "thumbs up our asses." People who don't know what directions to take. I feel sorry that millions of lives were put in the hands of these politicians.

> Go ahead. Tell me I am wrong. Let your hatred from W blind you from the facts. CSPAN was running congressional hearings yesterday that were shot in June. The Hurricane Center Director (Max somthing with an M) predicted this very thing. He said the levees wouldn't hold. Isn't it amazing that while every weather reporter in the world (or so it seemed) were in that area predicting that very fact, governments did NOTHING but call for an evacuation. Well, DUH! Isn't that what people do regardless? Again, more evidence of government indifference and indecision. Again, innocent people are left to suffer. Even as Katrina was beating a path for Florida, meteorologists were already predicting what it was going to do AFTER it hit Florida! It's a shame that too many politicians are reactive rather than proactive, and innocent people end up in ther wakes.

> Don't roll in with your sat. trucks and sat. phones and report that communications are down. Use those to help link up the first reponders. I would hope that people coordinating rescue efforts aren't watching TV.<
The media is there to elicit emotions from everyone else in the nation & the world. Countless reporters who could've shared their resources and just don't think the way the rest of us do. I'm sure the people on the ground running the rescue operations aren't worried about the media. It's funny to see military leaders' contempt fo media hordes. The media wants those NOT affected to feel sorry for themselves & their way of life and make us feel to do whatever we can to help. Well, DUH! As human beings, aren't we compelled to do that whenever diasters strike? Media hordes coming to disasters and "being the show" is nothing new. Anyone remember OKC? How about the image of Connie Chung rolling up to the Murrah Federal Building scene in a limo? I guess the sat. trucks now replace the limos.

> And finally, it troubles me that we are raising people to depend on the government for everything.<
That was the purpose for President Johnson signing the Welfare Act of 1964. It was never designed to be temporary for those in need. Some of those under welfare found ways to exploit it, and it is done today on a wider scale than ever. I laughed when politicos paraded in front of the media whores and said that they were going to reform welfare. Why? When the federal government is involved in 28 percent of this country's Gross National Product, why cut that number? That's government's thinking. They WANT people dependent on their government.

> Specifically, I am talking about the Convention Center people. Help wasn't
coming. Get up and leave. This is an example of government failing on every level, starting with the local leadership on up to the state and even federal on some levels.<
And that's why we, as registered voters, should ask different questions of those who seek political offices. Homeland security should be more than a deterrent for terrorists, it should be an agency designed to protect us & our soil from ALL threats, regardless or who/what/where/when/why/how. It should PROTECT us, not scare the bejeebers out of us! It's SECURITY for Christ's sake!

> People need to start looking out for #1.<
No, there should be more looking out for each other. Our society & political system has created a class system that will ultimately destroy what we have fought for for so many years. And when it does happen, Sheppard, Anderson, Tucker & all of those alphabet news networks will be there asking how could this have happened.....where is the relief.....and how could this have happened? They'll have the answers, but they'll never say.

CORRECTION: West also stated the poor people are the black people.

What does this mean, Kanye? Aren't there any poor people of different color, other than "your people". You, sir, are nothing more than a hate-bating racist. Yeah, I said it!

Oh, and nice post, TroyD.....spoken like a true "ashamed to be an American" liberal. You are the folks who allow people like Kanye West to spew hatred.
