I've noticed Jim Rome being sarcastic

Rome's show I've noticed of late, he seems bored, distracted... His interviews with people of low IQ he gets sarcastic or maybe glib is a better term. It must get boring even though he is so well paid to interview millionaire morons.. I even detect some tolerance of off-color racial snipes from callers. Back in the day he used to have a cow.
I flip back and forth between him and Rush. Its amazing both are so totally in control... Both so fluid, on top of their game..
The best part of Rome's show is when he makes fun of J Stew his call screener.

Jim Rome hasn't been interesting in 10 years. That was the last time he asked a tough question in a an interview.

His numbers have fallen off the table in the last three years. His L.A. numbers are just terrible.
He's always the lowest rated show on KLAC.

I haven't listened to Rome's radio show regularly in maybe over four years...it got to the point for me where the "Smack" sthick became stale, boring, and repetitive. Let's not forget that he's already in his mid-to-late 40s, so who's to say how much longer he has, with the same passion he had years ago, in still doing his radio show. His show was great in the pre-syndication days here in Southern California, but Leebo is saying above is true, it sounds like he's just mailing it in and simply collecting his multi-million dollar paycheck from Premiere/Clear Channel.

I am out!

Seriously he is unlistenable...thank god ESPN 950 replaced him with local programming.....On another note he totally ruins ESPN's afternoon line up.NFL live ,crap, Around The Horn, Pardon The Interuption

Yeah, his TV show Blows... Interviews in the Sports World are generally boring as a rule. Atheletes aren't normally intellectually stimulating..

Jim Rome ceased being relevant long ago.

He either needs to reinvent himself (hey, it worked for Geraldo!) or somehow find someone willing to let him give "no holds barred" color commentary.

Yeahs...he ain't gots no nowledg of that english language or anything like u do.

Rome ranked 29 Talkers Magazine.....

I guess he is "relevant"... Next Sports Talk is Mike and Mike at 45... I bet he breaks the top 20 in three years...

I actually like Rome, but only for the first hour at the most. His takes are pretty funny (usually), but the interviews are horrrrrrrrrible. On top of that, after he finishes an interview we get to hear him read 5-10 e-mails from 'clones' who said the interview was 'epic'. Gimmee a break.

I won't go as far as most of you to say that he's washed up, but less ego and more substance would be a very good thing. He definitely has some very good moments, but too often he takes good topics/ideas and drags them out way too long.

For those of you that heard the 'smackoff' last Friday, what did you think? I thought it was good for the most part; you gotta admit, you don't hear that kind of radio every day. At least it was a break from the norm.

What sports radio are you listening to in LA if you're not listening to Rome on 570? Just curious...

Check out Rome's ranking in the list from 2008 or 2007. I think he's down.

That said, the Talkers list has always been somewhat dubious. For instance, Rome is listed ahead of Howard Stern.

I also wonder- Dr. Laura still No. 4? Admittedly since I'm not a woman I'm less inclined to listen, but she seems more prone to be on the local day-to-dusk talker than others on that list.

At No. 83 is Mark Bernier, who was heard on two stations but now only one. I once called in his show and he asked me "Did Major League Baseball get rid of Marge Schott to appease the Jews?" on the air.

And no, Bernier is not a shock jock. He's just dumb and has no business being in anyone's list of Top anything or even on the air at a single station after that question.

The Talkers list only put sports talk hosts on the list a few years ago. There are only six sports talk hosts on the Top 100- one of whom being Mike Trivisonno, whose show has gone from solely sports to more of a general content show through the years.

The "honorable mention" list of 250 has a heavy WFAN flavor.

That said, I personally am not sure how much influence a national talk show host has.

I believe sports talk is like politics was said to be- it's all local.

A national host can't get a coach fired, for instance. He usually picks up on local media.

For an example that takes us back to topic- several years ago Simeon Rice was interviewed by Jim Rome on "The Jungle" and made disparaging comments towards Pat Tillman.

Rice was making some of the most inflamatory comments ever heard, yet no additional media picked up on it.

I submit to you outside of his cult Rome is a non-factor.

This year's smack-off was the best since 2004.

As for Rome's schtick: It's an acquired taste. It took me a little while to get used to his style. He has his off days, but I find he does a consistently solid program IMHO.

I like Rome. I have always thought he's been sarcastic, especially with callers, especially when they deserve it. Like the dude who called up and wanted to chastise him for promoting fathers to get their daughters into laying down for porno flicks. Or the time three or four years back, some player was supposed to be interviewed but canceled or didn't call in, and a caller called in to say what a great guy the player was, and what a great interview it was. He even went into some detail about how the player "told it like it was" or some such.

He's there for entertainment, not game strategies and uncovering arcane plans. I actually like that more than hearing details about pitching matchups or sports books or field conditions for hours on end.
The entertainment is nice in the sports radio world because too many interview shows treat the interviewees like gods, when they're not even that interesting outside of watching them play. Like Zo.

I won't dispute your first opinion (assuming your own tastes), but I can't buy your second at all. I like Rome's radio show yet I haven't listened to it regularly for two or so years (no local affiliate). But when I did listen, his radio interviews were often very good. I was always impressed by the depth of his questions considering Rome was mostly there for entertainment value, and that he could have easily gone the butt-kissing route so that the better guests would return. I don't remember any of that at all.

Perhaps that's changed within the last few years, but Jim Rome's interviews were one of the stronger points of his show.

I used to go out of my way to listen to Rome nearly every day, but now I only go out of my way to listen when I know he is going to have a take on something big that happened. I did make time for the 2009 Smack Off which was the best one I've listened to out of the handful I have. I liked the interviews with retired players or legends where there are a couple of segments or whole radio hour especially when they are in studio with Rome. I am not a big fan of interviews with current athletes on any show I find those for the most part just boring and PC the ol' "one game at a time" type interviews.

Too many sound-bites. It's like he's trying to be Jim Healy, and way over-doing it. Correct about the self-congratulation interviews.. too often they kill entire segments, and add nothing to the show.

The title of this thread is hilarious. Jim Rome has built a career on being sarcastic. It's what got his hiney kicked years ago by Jim Everett.

I have always kind of enjoyed Rome. But Rome without sarcasim wouldn't be Rome. Amazing that someone just noticed it.
